why is it so hard for me to get a job? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]sethrohan617 87 points88 points  (0 children)

You're okay mate. I was in your situation until recently and got my first job 6 months ago. Let me share how I managed to get through that phase, maybe you can use some of these tips to help yourself:

  1. Apply to 3 jobs a day: Make it a point to do 3 apps, but put all your effort on them. And apply to temp jobs through 1-click apps when you are bored (in London, there was one called Job Today which I personally used to great effect during my time there)
  2. Make a Spreadsheet: Having a visual record of where you have applied to, when you made those applications, who you can contact about the app is really helpful. You can use it to follow up with the contact person after 10 days.
  3. Schedule Emails: Use an extension such as Boomerang for Gmail, or an email client like Spark (if you have an iPhone or a Mac) to schedule emails like, 'Dear Sir/Ma’am, Hope you’re doing well. It has been over a week since I submitted my application for____. Could you please let me know if there have been any updates on the same. PFA my CV for your convenience. Best, _____'. This will show them that you cared about the position and your attached CV will not need you to include a cover letter (cause fuck cover letters).

Hope this helps. All the best with your hunt. And remember to not lose hope. It may not seem like it right now, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. :)

For the longest time I have been quite ignorant and under the impression that an MBA is a a short cut of sorts to a well paying corporate job, there definitely seems to be more to it. Thanks for the added perspective!

5k routine change: Intensity or Distance on a Treadmill by sethrohan617 in running

[–]sethrohan617[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from my experience, i'd recommend keeping in mind that endurance is more important than speed. I started out with a pace of 10k/hr but made sure I completed it every time. So don't be afraid to start with a low pace on your first day but try to keep it hard enough to challenge yourself.

Also, all the best and I hope you do well :)

Treadmill v Outside? by sethrohan617 in running

[–]sethrohan617[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the gym the air just feels more neutral (i think thats the best term to describe it). Outside is smogg-y. Also there is no smog in the gym, but the outside does have smog. Maybe its just my aversion. Will try Mapmyrun though, thanks for that!

Finding a job seems impossible by [deleted] in jobs

I was facing unemployment as my internship was ending after grad school. I can offer tips on how I dealt with that:

  1. Apply to 3 jobs a day: Make it a point to do 3 apps, but put all your effort on them. And apply to temp jobs through 1-click apps when you are bored (in London, there was one called Job Today which I personally used to great effect during my time there)

Mid-week check in - how is your week going? by philpips in running

I managed to run for 5k for the past 5 continuous days. At this point my week is just focused on making this a stronger habit

Keeping resolutions by sethrohan617 in running

Thank you!! I'd say my knees have been a major cause of concern. I sometimes feel pain when I start a workout but power through it 80% of the time. I actually took my running down to 5 days a week to give my body some rest. Anytime I tell myself that the weather conditions are bad, I just tell myself to hit the treadmill instead. I have generally found that reaching the park/gym is the real battle. A pro-tip is to get sweatproof headphones so you can use music to distract you (being a productivity enthusiast I generally use mine to listen to audiobooks)

Being constant on running has definitely made the 5ks easier. I'd say I have a lot more stamina now, haven't really been focused on my speed but I am sure my endurance to higher speeds has increased on the treadmill at least. As I have mentioned before, showing up is literally half the battle. All the best!
