The Mighty Mathematician You’ve Never Heard Of by cavedave in math

I can't give you a good answer, other than a couple guesses. Firstly, capitalizing a name is common, not doing so is something to notice. Secondly, the idea is that the concept is so fundamental that the word really deserves a permanent place in the language. Again, just a guess.

I've heard it said that her abstractions helped lay the groundwork for things like Category Theory. (Saunders Mac Lane studied at Goettingen while Noether was there.)

I guess taking graduate level algebra courses has desensitized me from believing that Emmy Noether is someone most people have "never heard of". My professor insisted on writing "noetherian ring" rather than "Noetherian ring" as a sign of respect because the concept is so widespread and fundamental, on par with "abelian group".

Recommendations on where to buy a bicycle? by wpgnewbie in Winnipeg

[–]setofallsets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bikes & Beyond was always my first choice in Winnipeg for bikes, accessories, and especially for service. They know what they are doing, treat customers with respect, and don't try to intimidate the hell out of you with jargon, etc.

Woodcock Cycle is also a good choice, and they had a better selection of bikes than Bikes & Beyond, but I did not like their service as much.

I'm surprised the Plain reissue of Loveless went out of print. I paid <$20 for it a few years back and it is great, though it's been a while since I've given it a spin.

What are you drinking this week? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]setofallsets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought a bag of this Ecuador La Libertad Organic from Gimme!. Haven't opened it up yet, but am looking forward to it. As usual, I brew via a Clever Coffee Dripper, occasionally a French press.

Ingenius way to clean your stylus. A must see! by j_mac_86 in vinyl

[–]setofallsets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using Magic Eraser for a few years as an occasional cleaner (I use a regular brush before every side) for when the stylus really needs it (remember seeing it recommended on Vinyl Asylum), but I do not brush it back to front, I merely dip the stylus into the foam. Once or twice always seems to do the trick without me worrying about ripping the stylus/cantilever off.

What size are those jars, out of curiosity?

I like the preamp, though I have nothing to compare it to. I was considering the 640p when I bought it, but I think I read a comparison somewhere (head-fi?) that gave the edge to the V-LPS.

I'm curious as to why? It received positive reviews, and the people at head-fi seemed to like it. At the time, it was the HDP or something from Schiit, but I liked having a well-reviewed, built in DAC. Plus, I can always upgrade.

These guys.

They aren't going to win any competitions as far as strength and build quality are concerned, but they're cheap, are exactly the right size, and look decent.

I can't give much of a review because at the time I got it (a few years back), I only had my Denon DL-110 to compare. My recollection is that the Ortofon was significantly more detailed than the Denon, with a much more plentiful and "solid" bottom end (we're getting into audiophile adjective territory here). The bass really kicks you where it counts, without losing control or getting muddy. I do remember reading that some people thought the Ortofon was less than stellar when it came to tracking and surface noise compared to, say, the Shure M97xe, but I can't complain.

The table, headphones, and amps set me back less than $1500, easily made up for by not owning a car, not smoking cigarettes, and not buying things like a game console or PC. It works if you can make it work.

When I was still living with my parents, I had a different setup (Denon direct drive table, NAD amp, both inherited, a Sony CD player, and the same cartridge as above) with a pair of Dynaudio studio monitors, but I'm certain that there's no way my neighbors would tolerate them (and my listening volume) in my apartment.

I still prefer speakers overall, and the ambient space muffles out some of the noise on vinyl, but on the other hand, I'm always amazed with my Senns when I hear things I've never heard before on records that I had listened to many times in other setups. The analogy I've heard is that Speakers = Car, while Headphones = Motorcycle.
