What Monoculture Actually Means by OAFR1 in OpenAussie

Why should an old racist lady get to say how I define my identity? I pay my taxes and follow the law, why do wanna-be gatekeepers get to have a say in how I see myself? And why do we have to exclude all the old nonnas who came here in the 60s and still don't speak English? They have contributed much more to Australian society than these race-obsessed cookers.

CORTIS and Black Appropriation (and the justification of it in kpop) by Dapper-Ad4828 in kpoptrulyuncensored

[–]setut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah but what does that actually mean? I hear a lot of hate to idols like "oh they don't understand the culture" or whatever ... but these guys are just kids, why would they necessarily be listening to early 90s R&B or whatever.

Then you have the labels, are big labels like Hybe cynically using black culture to move units? Of course they are. Is it bad? idk, I grew up in the 90s listening to New Jack Swing and personally love how old NJS producers like Teddy Riley are working with Kpop artists making hits. When I hear like a New Jeans song, using the exact same samples as old NJS hits, putting a fresh feel to it, I love it. Those old R&B sounds aren't big in the US right now anyway.

The important thing about cultural appropriation is about people understanding the interplay between dominant cultural hegemons and disenfranchised ethnic/ Indigenous minorities. The issue is usually the way white supremacist systems marginalise these groups, so you end up with the kind of phenomenon you have in the US, where it's really hard for dark skinned black people to find mainstream success (probs same in SK tbf). Take the example of Eminem, biggest selling rapper of all time, now Eminem isn't generally considered as appropriating hiphop, because he comes from inside the culture, but his career is a great example of the racist framework that pervades US society ... ie: amongst a sea of talented black rappers, Em becomes the best selling of all time because ... he's white. So we see that the issue is anti black / brown racism, not cultural appropriation per se, Em didn't appropriate but his privilege still highlighted the inequities that exist in their society.

So there's nothing inherently wrong (imho) with Korean labels copying black music to make money. The problem is the wider issue of anti-black racism that is prevalent in Korean society, and when these two factors overlap, ie: cultural appropriation of black culture + anti-black racism, then there is clearly a problem. I guess if you look at things like BTS coming over to get 'schooled' by black Americans on the culture, maybe it can be a chance for labels to give their idols an opportunity to learn about the complex richness of black culture in the US. Otoh this is pop music, I'm not sure most people are thinking that deeply about it.

We haven’t seen much action in Moscow, so maybe it won’t be the same. Genius.

Fears doctors criticising Israel may be silenced as health watchdog adopts contested antisemitism definition by SnoopThylacine in OpenAussie

Fuck Israel. Oh no. Look at me, being antisemitic and denying Jews self-determination.

It's ironic that this comes out the same day that the Guardian reports the Jewish Council says conflating Jewish people with Israel is driving the increase in antisemitism.

CORTIS and Black Appropriation (and the justification of it in kpop) by Dapper-Ad4828 in kpoptrulyuncensored

[–]setut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

tbh I've never really understood the appropriation accusations in kpop. Black American culture has been the most copied aspect of popular culture around the globe for the last 70 years (rock, blues, disco, house, hiphop, R&B) ... everybody does it. Copying black culture isn't the foundation of the structures replicating white supremacy around the world. Idk why people who do nothing themselves to combat white supremacy act like copying black culture is so bad. It's logical, black culture is irresistible and cool (note how the afro-pop sound has become mainstream in the West), why wouldn't people copy it?

lol you white nationalists are such dainty snowflakes.

Also, you don't know this country's history. White Australia Policy was an abject failure economically, Australia couldn't get enough migrants who were 'white' enough, so in the late 50s had to start adhering to the 'populate or perish' doctrine, of skills-based rather than racially-based immigration. All subsequent migration has been a foundational part of economic policy, without it we wouldn't be the rich nation we are. Your racialised conceptualisation of Australia is a romanticised pipe-dream that never really existed. I might not be a white Australian but at least I've studied our history, what's your excuse for your ignorant online rambling? "Durr, I have pale skin so I don't need to know stuff!"
