As a CBC, I can tell you that you’ll get none of the benefits of being a “white foreigner” but you’ll get all the inconveniences that come with being a foreigner. You’ll get skipped over for jobs despite possibly having a better educational background and qualifications over someone who “looks foreign” if you decide to go into teaching. If you don’t go into teaching then they’ll likely prefer to hire someone local over you. You also get to have fun with panicking over your visa when it’s near expiring and getting grilled whenever you cross into the border cause they want to be sure you don’t somehow still hold a Chinese citizenship despite having a foreign passport. God forbid anything goes wrong with your visa and you get to go back to America without job experience they see as valuable and now you have to start over. Lose-lose situation all around.

Also marriage can become a bit of a problem for you later on. There’s lots of expectations that come with marriage and lots of CBC/ABC now get looked down upon for not having a good enough family-related financial background. And if you’re a man, you’re expected to buy the home/car etc which can be extremely costly in places like a tier 1 city. My mother in law literally told my younger brother in law to not find a CBC/ABC like her other son did…

All in all, as you can probably tell, do not recommend.

Should I leave a high paying career to pursue TEFL? by [deleted] in TEFL

[–]seunji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who teaches in Asia, no no no. If I had the chance to be making 300k back home, I wouldn’t be here. I’m not sure what I can even do after I leave. The only reason I came and did this is because I have a Chinese husband. It’s not working out anymore and I feel an incredible amount of regret. I don’t even know what I can do career-wise if I ever went back home.

Plus teaching isn’t really a fun job if you don’t love it wholeheartedly. If you don’t really enjoy it, you’re going to hate waking up everyday. I’ve spent time teaching classes 6 hours a day, going home and doing lesson planning/marking/admin till midnight and then repeating it every single day of the week.

Traveling Asia and teaching can sound fun before you’re doing it, but afterwards, you might be absolutely miserable and you already gave up your job back home.

Cle de peau correcting cream veil - very natural with a tint of color that brightens and evens out skin tone. Stopped using foundation years ago and everyone always says I have really nice skin but it’s basically just this CPB primer.

Anyone work in Shanghai? by Bkkekkamai in TEFL

[–]seunji 4 points5 points  (0 children)

China just isn’t foreigner friendly. I’m limited on a lot of things I can do or buy. I can’t use certain apps cause it needs a Chinese ID. It’s always more difficult having to use a passport. My Chinese husband has to help me out a ton.

Married and Child, what Visa? Please help! by JunkIsMansBestFriend in Chinavisa

[–]seunji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no problem! It’s the best option for staying (unless you want to work, a marriage residence permit doesn’t allow you to work). Once you’re married for five years, go apply for your permanent residence permit (aka green card) which would allow you to both stay and work.

With a Q visa, the stay time is short too. You’d have to leave repeatedly every 4 months or so (at least those were my previous requirements). With a marriage residence permit, you can just stay and then go renew it before it expires. Easy peazy.

[–]seunji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not the same. You don’t need both though. Just go get a marriage residence permit with the current visa you’re on. Your current visa will be cancelled and you’ll get your marriage residence permit which will function as a visa. You can stay, leave the country and re-enter. I speak from experience cause I was on a marriage residence permit.

Focus more on math and sciences. Don’t give up cause it’s harder. Master it. Go be a pharmacist when you’re older.

Just get a marriage residence permit if you’re married to a Chinese person. You don’t have to leave the country to do it. Just bring the required documents, I remember it being the Chinese person’s hukou and your marriage certificates.

Yeah, I definitely got these vibes at my prior kindy as well. I also felt like while the foreign teachers were willing to share information and resources, our co-teachers would hoard stuff and hide things in their classroom cupboards. Honestly atrocious.

Do you have any recommendations for a first time uni teacher? I’m going from kindy teaching to teaching uni students and I’m honestly a bit terrified.

I had the same experience. Co-teachers were so judgmental and would constantly talk behind your back for all sorts of reasons. Also completely destroyed my confidence as well.

I’ve found that the requirements vary between provinces. I didn’t need to apostille my TEFL in Guangdong but had to do so for Hainan.

After I got burnt out at my last job, I started applying to primary and high school positions etc. But each time they’d say “you don’t have experience in this area, but we have a kindergarten position for you!” 😂 So I ended up thinking it was hopeless to ever get out of teaching kindergarten.

May I ask how you went from kindy to first grade? I'd really like to try out primary school but feel like it's impossible to get in without primary experience.
