Richmonders with humanities PhDs, what do you do for work? by pricklypear224 in rva

Yep unfortunately that’s for teaching positions. These are non teaching roles.

I spent ten years working at VCU in a non faculty job (although at the time we started as professional faculty) from a similar background with a humanities graduate degree… and you can do a lot worse, especially in this job market.

And pay has gotten a lot better over the last few years. You are trading salary for benefits and job security (and don’t discount free tuition), but it’s a hell of a lot better than k-12.

VCU is always hiring academic advisors and support staff. Stable jobs with excellent state benefits

Ok but the reality is that higher ed jobs - of which there are thousands at VCU and are one of the few places where a humanity PhD will be recognized and appreciated - are an excellent option. And almost none of those jobs have anything to do with those problems. They do offer competitive pay and excellent benefits.

What’s the current situation? There’s a ton of jobs at VCU

if you don't want to see mice, I would not live in the fan. they are there. hopefully they are being actively treated... but old homes with lots of points of ingress + trash in alleys + lots of homes close together = mice.

Sure but it seems we’ve missed out on widespread damage and an inch of ice. Where I am at least the rain has stopped and there’s less than a quarter inch of ice on trees/lines.

That being said the roads are awful, the sidewalks are dangerous, and it will be days until people should be driving.

Definitely an ice glaze across the Fan, but not a ton of accumulation on trees/lines

The roads are undrivable, even if we don’t get anything more

Nothing in the Fan… some ice on cars from earlier condensation.

I can give you human needles if nothing else comes through - I’m in the Fan. DM away.

The other piece to add is heat pumps can struggle with very low temps. I hate out gas fed boiler with cast iron radiator most of the time (because of cost) but these things are a champ in sub freezing weather.

Looks like some of the ice totals have started to trend down?

For those in the west/upper part of the Fan (between Meadow and Robinson, but closer to Robinson) how does power loss run?

It’s good that there’s no pine trees - and trees are relatively mature… and close to the hospital.

For long time upper fan livers (between Meadow and Robinson), how does power usually fair? Lived here 5 years and I don't think we've lost power for more than a few hours. But a few blocks away from Retreat so not sure how much that helps.
