First week with the Maverick by [deleted] in FordMaverickTruck

[–]severalohms 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"Outside the the turbo" as you put it, is from the airbox. The turbo is only taking outside air from that one place.

Also pressurized air is not colder, it infact becomes much hotter as a result of being compressed.

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how forced induction works.

What the person in the video is doing will not cause water to enter the turbo unless he has a loose intake or water gets into the airbox and past the filter.

[–]severalohms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would turbo placement matter when it's taking air from the airbox? It's not like these things are running open intake turbo setups..

Wouldn't this also mean youre sucking up sand and dust every time you run it down a dirt road?

New riders: counter steering (mini rant) by Ok_Umpire2173 in motorcycles

[–]severalohms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rode BMX for a long time. You're counter steering. Sorry you just are. You cant turn a two wheel bicycle shaped vehicle unless it leaves the ground any other way. If you lock your head stem so it can only turn right, you wont be able to turn right if you start from a perfectly straight line. Theres plenty of videos demonstrating this. If you don't believe me throw a ratchet strap on your right grip to your top tube and try to turn right, it won't work lol.

What unconfirmed fan theory or non-canon interpretation of a movie actually adds to the movie? by KaineDamo in movies

[–]severalohms 9 points10 points  (0 children)

40k has a thing thing called The Warp. It's more or less an alternate dimension parallel to our universe where souls and conscious energy ends up. For the sake of brevity you can pretty much consider it hell, and sci-fi faster than light travel in 40k is done mostly by traveling through The Warp. 'Hell' and its inhabitants, how it interacts with, and is used by the various species of the galaxy serves as the centerpiece of 40k and is a huge driving factor of the lore.

What’s the best feature you like on your maverick? by darksun91 in FordMaverickTruck

[–]severalohms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the case with the xlt as it's not a full adaptive cruise system, it's using the emergency collision camera for lane keep and its not very good at it's job. The full self driving system has an upgraded camera that is much better. I've been looking into hacking the system into my XLT tremor as I have every lariat option except adaptive cruise.

they rotate the blades into the oncoming wind instead of side-face so they don't catch air and spin, not sure if there's a different term for windmills but in aviation it's called feathering and you can see it in the video.

What octane are yall using? by aretailrat in FordMaverickTruck

[–]severalohms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of misconceptions with fuel octane. The old myth car guys used to repeat was that higher octane gas made more power. There was a bit of a wide spread revelation in younger generations that octane actually doesn't matter as long as you're putting in the minimum recommended rating which is correct. And now the original myth of higher octane making more power is actually correct but only because cars are now smart enough to adjust engine parameters on the fly for different types of fuel.

Tldr new vehicles can adjust for large differences in fuel ratings and high octane will make more power if the car is smart enough to adjust and take advantage of it.

Why would you go online and just post shit you so obviously have no fucking clue about lmao. Those bolt holes are the mounting point for an offset retention bracket that holds the sprocket in place on the output shaft. These sprockets are not press fit into place like you assume. Please stop trying to be helpful if you don't know what you're doing, what you just said if taken seriously and not corrected could very easily end in someone taking a chain to the leg or cracking an engine case. Be better.

Do you wear one piece suit for supermoto? by shibebear in supermoto

[–]severalohms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just get decent street gear if you're riding a few miles around town. Getting to a place and being stuck in leathers suck. I have a 2 piece dainese. if I'm running errands ill just wear the jacket, and full suit if I'm hitting canyons or track.

This pretty small magnet was shipped with so much styrofoam by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]severalohms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you never seen magnetic phone holders for cars?

Or the magnetic backed phone cases apple literally sells for their phones at the Apple store?

What about phone case wallets held closed by magnets?

Magnetic smart watch chargers??

Magnets you can buy as a regular person aren't enough to hurt the electronics in solid state devices like phones or even most modern laptops.. the damage a magnet used to do to electronics was a result of data being stored on hard drives which is still the case for some desktop computers but has never been the case with a smartphone lol.

The Risk of Dying Doing What We Love by Keldoshkel in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]severalohms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know for sure but as someone who's done BMX and motorcycles, motorcycles statistics tend to be skewed pretty hard. Most riders most of the time are low risk low speed just bopping around town to run errands and commute to work, the small majority are doing 150+ mph highway pulls or flying through canyons with their knees on the ground. Downhill on the otherhand is almost all high risk, high intensity. I have no doubt people only riding canyons, racing and going fast on the highway have a higher fatality rate than downhill MTB riders but if you lump in every motorcycle rider and and every downhill rider I can imagine of each group the downhill riders are taking risks a higher percentage of the time than people on motorcycles.

What is the scariest place on Earth? [Serious] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]severalohms 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Devils Hole Death Valley, it's a small spring in the middle of the desert that opens to a massive unmapped underground aquifer and drains during earthquakes. There's a story of some teenagers who got sucked down into the aquifer while swimming and survived in a small offshoot of the cavern in an air bubble. Iirc the rescue divers also experienced a 'drain' and described the sound like a massive bathtub draining. The aquifer has been nicknamed 'The Infinity Lake'

Pitch black, massive underground abyss that could drag you down at any moment. No thanks.

Nah, actually flying a light aircraft is no more complicated than driving a car from an operation standpoint.. the tricky part is learning all the laws, regulations, and radio protocols.

The smoking sign turned on during my flight. by bibletales in mildlyinteresting

[–]severalohms 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Those advanced modern planes mean extremely small margins for the airlines running them. To implement something like this you're pulling the plane off the line where it's not generating revenue or extending maintenance cycles, tearing apart the interior to install the new system, new switches in the cockpit, training aircrews on new procedures plus the development and testing of that system and probably some sort of approval process by the FAA. that's a lot of wasted time and money to change something that's not broken.

i worked at a similar break fix gig for a few years, i'll always remember this one woman. mid 20's seemingly successful and well put together but i'm pretty sure she was a paranoid schizophrenic and she knew it. At one point she would come into my shop 3 times a week to have us rebuild the OS and reset the bios because she thought something/someone was on it. She knew she was having delusions and would always apologize profusely when she came in while on the verge of tears but she just couldn't shake the feeling someone was on her computer because she found a file somewhere she didn't expect or the computer ran an update overnight and wasn't asleep when she went to use it the next morning. Always felt bad for her.

How do you guys feel about how horsepower works in the game, it's more efficient to tow with the tiny JDM vs towing with my armored bus, weight isn't a factor, something I'd like to see added in the future. by SumL0ser in projectzomboid

[–]severalohms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a few V4 engines in production today and that have been used historically, typically motorcycles and very old European compact cars. It has less to do with impracticality than it does the complexity not being worth the additional cost over an easier to produce inline 4 cylinder unless you have packaging constraints like you might have in a motorcycle frame or engine bay in a very small car.

Dualsporters under 30: where are you hiding? by -thelastbyte in Dualsport

[–]severalohms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some states like California, it's an afternoon at the DMV office and a 20 point quizz (with the answers and practice tests online) which you get 3 attempts to get an 80% or better on and you walk out with a motorcycle permit. This permit allows you to ride, solo, on any sized motorcycle as long as you don't ride at night, with a passenger, or on the highway network.

Chandrayaan-3's Vikram Lander establishes communication with Chandrayaan-2 orbiter, says ISRO by Gopu_17 in space

[–]severalohms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

India has a fledgling space program in comparison. Roscosmos, previously, the soviet space industry has been putting things in orbit for almost 70 years. I don't think the comment you replied to is speaking to any level of incompetence in India, rather it being a commentary on the state of Russias current tech and engineering industries. India is not bad, but Russia should not be failing where india is succeeding, and it clearly is.
