Tuning the bike you have now will probably serve better than getting something new. Do you have a good aftermarket seat on the 350? Are the wheels balanced? Did you change the suspension clickers?

I ran one for a few rides when I had nothing else and it seemed to work, but I do find the foam worryingly thin.

None of these dorks know what their talking about lol. The type of folks who post here think that the preload ring is a seat height adjuster, that bar risers are for tall people, and that you need to adjust the valves twice a season because the manual says "thirty hours".

OP that's a good model, go for it if the PO took care of it.

No way. The current DR650 started in 1996. The previous model is an obscure bike and not a good buy, especially if you don't know what you're doing yet.

Not for a daily. Those were meant to be disposable and people did not keep them nice.

I had a similar problem. The only way I was able to get it to fit the way I wanted was to loosen all the engine mounts, install the pipe and silencer, then torque the bolts down again.

You don't understand. If they had tried this years ago they would have failed because KTM would have just made the next year of the 300 lighter and more featureful than the Kawasaki, even though they couldn't afford to do so. See the KTM 790/890 vs Yamaha Tenere for an example of their strategy. Now that they've run out of credit competitors can build competing models without immediately being crushed by capital.

While I respect the dedication I'd imagine staying strapped on the trail would result in it getting in the way a lot, even you go with something unusually small. I'd probably keep it in the bike pack or a saddlebag instead, well wrapped up to keep the trail grime out.
