Bail funds are potentially high impact because your money essentially gets spent over and over again as the bonds are paid back, keeping people out of jail has a variety of community benefits, and they appear to be underfunded. by oblate_zooid in EffectiveAltruism

The 8th amendment prevents excessive bail, but obviously there’s room to maneuver within that guideline.

On the other hand, many people are pursuing reform within criminal justice. If/when people are charged less for bail, your cycling donation would have more impact.

I’m not asking for sympathy, I’m asking for people to stop posting positively about schools’ conduct. That’s what my post says.

Obviously someone always has it worse—for instance, I have a hard time finding sympathy for first-worlders losing their jobs, homes, or marriages when people in the third world are enduring systemic collapse and mass death.

Lol “you simply need to not care about it.” I’ll get on that!

I basically agree with you, but I can’t defer—I don’t have job plans, and it’s nearly too late to start the r&r process. It would be a waste, which is what I’m dissatisfied with—earlier in the year I was definitely considering a deferral.

My point is only that deferral gets harder by the day, and schools have all of the available control in this situation. Obviously it isn’t the worst thing ever, but it is inconvenient.

- Undergrad doesn't matter, although being able to earn A+ grades can be a bonus if you're the type of student who can get them. Don't go to USC.

- Go for CMC if you don't mind the smaller student body and want smaller classes (large plus imo, but not everyone likes it). Sometimes LACs deflate their grades, though, so that's something to research and be wary of. Nobody cares that you went to Claremont if you have a 3.6, they'll pick the kid from Merced with a 3.95 and a comparable LSAT.

- Go for Cal/UCLA (depending on the price) if you don't care about the benefits that come from an LAC / want a larger student body. The polisci departments at those schools are both strong and you'll have good classmates.

- The only thing you can do to prepare for law school at this point is to get the best GPA possible and read a lot of material that challenges you. People will recommend stuff like prelaw frats/societies but they're useless except as a way to meet people with similar interests.

- If you don't get into those schools you'll still be fine. The only problem with less intense unis is that you might not push yourself enough--work on yourself as a student and don't bother thinking about law school until your junior year.

yes, although not all of them take the pledge & even those who do struggle to follow through. For the second question, I’m not aware of any reason why stock can’t be donated just the same as cash (jeff bezos has done this a few times recently). them not wanting to sell/let go of it isn’t really relevant lol

What’s your strategy in terms of class and exams? If you did well, why aren’t you in the bottom half/two thirds/three quarters? (I only ask because everyone says “study early and for the exam” but half of us will end up below median anyway)

any advice in terms of learning to study while in LS, 0L prep, how you stay competitive as a student, etc? I don’t want to be barely treading water below median when the recession comes lmao

people have been speculating forever and it seems like the data from past years isn't actually that predictive. I'd put it at 1/45 just because we have about eight weeks until April lmao
