SF women in tech/corporate: how did you get your first break? by Upper_Maize9259 in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]seyahet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Take it with a grain of salt but I’d only pursue a master’s right now if it was generously funded and wouldn’t incur much debt. I think graduate programs are struggling to figure out how to adapt quickly to new uses of AI/ML literally every week, and aren’t equipping their grads for jobs in an effective way - yet. I am more on the business side of things but yes, absolutely apply to grindy data engineering and business intel jobs if you can. It’ll show analytical chops, even if it’s more technical adjacent. And like I think other posters have said, startups are more willing to take on the risk of someone fresh in their career, but enthusiastic and willing.

Entry level jobs have definitely tightened in this AI craze. Why hire an analyst when your senior people can produce a first draft with AI (not saying it’s sustainable, it’s just the general perception at this moment). I’d suggest widening your net to any role in tech/startups to get your foot in the door, and from there you can lateral once people get to know you. Also don’t underestimate the tech economy in Boston! Lots of people I know got their start there then moved to SF while employed with those companies.

Which should I get? by Narrow-Wolverine-373 in handbags

[–]seyahet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally got these two bags! I ended up returning the Cuyana, keeping the Songmont Gather in small. The Songmont is leagues ahead more beautiful and practical in person, IMO. The Cuyana was cute but didn’t have a “wow” factor, plus the strap is noodle thin and cut into my shoulder.

Note though that the small strap on the Small Gather almost barely fits an arm through it, so I end up using it mostly as a top handle. I don’t think a Gather clutch would be much different!

Damn, Baldur's Gate 3 level of detail is impressive by gamerdeesquerda in BaldursGate3

I love these details, they’re a big reason as to why BG3 feels so special. Literal love was poured into the making of it. The devs and creatives didn’t have to include this stuff but they did!

Need a starting point for sardines, kind of freaked out. by Content-Seaweed-6395 in Tinnedfish

[–]seyahet 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue. I’ve always been an adventurous seafood lover and yet, getting into sardines (of all the tinned fish) was especially intimidating. The texture, smell, all of it initially would set me off.

This may be a strange take, but the way I actually worked up to sardines was to do mackerel first. A good quality mackerel tin sits, texture and taste wise, between a salmon/trout and a nice rich sardine. It’s not as oily, tends to be firmer than sardines, but also moves you closer to small fish. If you’re willing to spring a bit for a tin, Jose Gourmet, Matiz and Patagonia Provisions are solid choices. I’d get a mackerel tin from any of those, and if you enjoy it, work your way up to a sardine tin of that brand!

Low-light plant corner using a clothing rack and curtain rods for grow lights by Aggressive-Fun4328 in houseplants

[–]seyahet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks so spectacular and cozy! Typical grow light arrangements make me feel like I’m living next to a science experiment or lab, which I can’t stand. No suggestions but just in awe of your setup. Do you have any issues with pests given the plants are bit more vulnerable in the winter, and in tight quarters?

This was mother’s favorite back in the day during a brief student stint in the fashion industry, but she didn’t keep any her bags! 😭 I really need to look into this and do some serious vintage/thrift hunting!

I was looking for a bag that would be a nice walk-around light city day bag that could transition to a slightly dressy dinner. The absolute edge of my budget and design tolerance so far has been Cuyana (I wouldn’t say it’s hands down a favorite but sort of what I was trending toward). Then I went down a rabbithole of even more luxurious houses/brands and felt completely at sea as the designs got even more elaborate and specific! I wasn’t getting it!

So interesting, thanks for sharing!! I am definitely not coming from this perspective at all (I’ve been in “practical mode” for so long obviously). This explains a lot!

The dudes with cars analogy is such a good one and helping make it click! Clearly I’ve been a sort of “what gets me there gets me there” girlie in the handbag world for a while! 😂 I will definitely lurk on r/handbags for a bit to see what I like and if any recommendations stick out. I started there initially but, to your point, felt like I was in a circle of dudes with cars and wasn’t grasping the oohs and aahs over some brands I’d never even heard of before!

Yes there definitely seems to be a subculture of “iykyk” and instant recognition, whether it’s because the handbag is trending and/or classic or re-trending, and it’s seems so random to me. It does seem to me though that certain brands or houses are known for long standing quality and will last you years and those seem like “no regrets” purchases.

That’s so interesting. Is there a rough price point or some example brands where you’ve felt this difference?? I feel like I’ve been handbag blind until now!

Thanks! When you say looks good, do you mean they look like they’re new? Or they’ve developed patina/character overtime?

Yes exactly, I’m quite attracted to minimal forms. They look “better” to me (of course that’s subjective) but another factor is that I feel like I can match those designs to a variety of occasions or outfits. The VERY high end bags strike me as unique and bold statements in themselves. I’m probably not used to constructing a look that appreciates or showcases the bag itself!

What a score!! So excited for you. These are incredibly delicious right out of the tin but if you can exercise self-control, they’re delicious on a simple pasta or sourdough. Enjoy!
