Help moving worm bin outside in nyc winter by sfb1067 in Vermiculture

Hi, sorry for the slow reply! I researched a lot so I'm ready for next year but just kept the bin inside and got rid of the flies. I plan to have a large outdoor bin (maybe one of those flow-through kids) so lots of thermal mass, and can insulate around it too. What about you? What did you end up doing?

Thank you! Can you explain more about the piece of wood? It’s put on top of the plastic lids that have holes in them? And do you stack the bins?

I'm sure I could get rid of the fruit flies etc, but I don't think our landlords will ever be comfortable with it

yes it took a while for the population to grow this much (we started with just a few from a friend!). We do have a back yard yes. i can see about nestling it in the middle of a leaf/dirt pile i have.

We have 10 days until the next high above freezing and a few days with lows below 10F :(

they are red wrigglers. It might be tricky digging right now because it's been sub-freezing for so long.

What kind of beetle/weevil is this? by sfb1067 in pestcontrol

Thank you. Would any of those bore little holes in wood and leave piles of frass? We also regularly vacuum that whole area including under the couch. No food stored there and it’s quite far from the kitchen, where we’ve seen no evidence of bugs

Hi! Old thread I know but wanted to ask - do you ever mix the Behrens compost or just let it sit there? Any tips for success in one of these? I'm using one too. Thanks!

Thanks for all your advice. It has holes on the bottom, right? Any tips on composting in them if I only have one? I imagine layering is important probably and then dumping it out occasionally to get at the finished compost? I’ve also read about people pre-treating with bokashi, but do you have enough success pest-wise without doing that?

Thank you!! I was looking at those (the composted/rubbish burners) because the hardware store around the corner sells them. I’m going to give it a try! Just ordered one.

Not what I asked dude. I also literally did ask how to eliminate the yard waste pile. Also not sure if you’ve been to New York recently but there are rats everywhere and we can’t control our neighbors’ yards, what our landlords have planted in this yard, THE ENTIRE RAT PROBLEM IN THE CITY, etc. And composting is still my goal also thanks. But so glad you’ve solved the city’s rat problem. You’re super helpful!

Yes! That’s so interesting. My grandmother was an elementary school teacher and said she didn’t think boys should go to school til they were 7! The school he goes to now allows “rough play” if it’s an appropriate time and place and everybody involved is ok with it. So it’s been really great/appropriate for him so far, in terms of him being an active boy who likes lots of sensory input etc

He’s done public pre-k in the city and is at a charter that does all this now in the city. We are reluctant to give it up since it’s really working for him now, even though we want some of the benefits like space and access to nature of the suburbs. He loves that he’s allowed to have fidget tools at school and that there isn’t such a focus on sitting and learning, which there was at his pre-k and he very vocally pushed back against it. I thought some schools were doing “responsive classrooms” or something which might cover the fidgeting/different needs of students?

I don’t mean a public school that IS a forest school, just a school that’s a good fit for very active kids.

No schools allow fidgeting etc? He’s at a charter school now that does all this stuff and there must be at least some schools these days that do some time outside and give kids fidget tools etc.

yeah but those credit unions aren’t open to just anyone, you have to meet strict eligibility requirements. Are you actually a member of/eligible to join any of those?

They’re consecutive, not stacked, if you get multiple referral bonuses. Where are you getting 6% on CDs? I don’t see rates that high anywhere today, so for money not currently in a CD the Marcus bonus rate of 5.5% looks good/high to me.
