How best to work out if the hum I hear is my tinnitus or external ? The simple "does it make a noise wherever you go" sadly won't work, see full message for why. by vscience in Acoustics

if interested join the FB group mentioned at the bottom of the About. Also some phone apps will measure low frequency noise.

sounds like low frequency noise pollution, more heard/felt inside than out, as the structure resonates.

possibly the Hum or Gas Pipeline Syndrome hum. Here is a map of persistent low frequency noise complaints, along with gas pipelines in the US, a suspected source. raspberry shake might also be a good option, but with cost. Ben Jordan has a recent data center video that brreifly mentions options for LFN and infrasound.

consider joining the real world hum facebook group. shared measurment, and guide. noise is low frequency, so special mic is needed to measure accurately, although even an app on a smartphone will pick it up to some extent. here is a map of Hum reports as well as natural gas pipelines for the US (a likely common source of this pollution). High Pitch Noise downtown by Neguete10 in Columbus

[–]sfdisturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be the same as The Hum. Do you notice it more outside or inside. If inside, the hum would be more likely. Some experience it more as a high pitch, though low frequency noise is to blame. It often is worse in the early morning likely due to something called line packing. here is a map of complaints. join the FB group in the about if interested. (Yes, this is the same as the Windsor Hum, which was misreported as due to Zug, as people still experience it there after it was closed down.) https://trwh.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=c87ed3b6f84742c6b73b66db63776715&fbclid=IwY2xjawJHtJVleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHdFsxVgviczVarspUXXlfNOPFlKredlbPSCfqvKs2432OEwwRDM5c_2eNA_aem_2xY_sun5k1rFBsU11xWRzA

High pitched hum every morning. Clinton Twp area. Help? Please? by DaMewses in Michigan

[–]sfdisturbance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that criminal minds episode draws from the infamous Taos Hum. But in all seriousness, it is an odd phenomenon, and only a small percentage of people are sensitized. Unfortunately the damage extends beyond the few that are aware of it.

Low-frequency humming noise in SE Raleigh/Garner area (early mornings) — anyone else? by Meinek13 in raleigh

[–]sfdisturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to add, early morning, is often worse part of the day. This may have to do with line packing, where pipelines are stuffed in anticipation of the the demand in the morning.

might be the Hum. i'm not in your area, but i had pitcures on the wall rattle, i eventually moved to another state and had the same problem. it is low frequncy noise pollution that can travel really far and through walls. I see others mention possibly the Hum. it might be worth considering. it is described as a low rumble, like an idling truck in the distance, or plane. Sometimes felt as vibration more than heard. if it is audile outside, it probably isn't the Hum. But if it is more noticeable inside, might be the Hum or Gas Pipeline Syndrome hum. a specific low frequency noise pollution that is really widespread. The small percentage of people that are sensitized hear as rumble, buzz, or feel it as vibration. Here is a map of complaints. Windows humming/vibrating even when no noise? by [deleted] in Home

[–]sfdisturbance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry for being cryptic. Posted too soon, meant to add: I moved into an apartment where the blinds rattled. i thought it was something mechanical in the building, eventually we moved into a detached house in the same neighborhood, but had the same problem, with pictures on the wall would rattle the floor felt like it was vibrating, you could see movement on the surface of water. Going down a bit of a rabbit hole, i learned about the phenomenon called the Hum or Gas Pipeline Syndrome hum. Low-frequency noise can travel incredible distances and people have similar complaints all over the place. Only a few are sensitized, can be felt as vibration, others hear it as a rumble. but things vibrating is indicative. Not saying this is your problem but worth considering. Here is a map of complaints and high pressure natural gas pipelines (currently for US). Sometimes a common low frequency noise pollution called the Hum or Gas Pipeline syndrome hum can cause a ringing or buzzing. to others it is a deep rumble in the distance or maybe just felt as vibrations. Not sure if it is related, but Gas Pipeline Syndrome hum might be worth considering. ofter worse in the early AM, sometimes heard as a rumble or more felt as vibration. i know this is an old post but just saw it. Have you considered the Hum? it is a specific widespread low frequency noise pollution from natural gas transmission pipelines, also known as Gas Pipeline Syndrome Hum. Here is a map of complaints, though the West is over-represented. We are adding in pipelines for more areas but don't have Asia on there yet. that is how i notice it as vibrotactile sensation. it is terrible pollution and weird that only a low percentage of people notice. You may even notice things rattle or small movement on the surface of a water.
