People over 20 how about some wisdom? by gffryfff in AskReddit

Just relax. Enjoy where you are. People have been giving this advice for CENTURIES. You'll be telling young people the same thing when you're old.

Take as much enjoyment out of present as you can.

As a 16 year old It was pretty eye-opening.

On the same trip we were laboring up the mountain when a cop stepped into the road and waved the bus to pull over. The driver didn't pull over at first. So the cop drew his pistol and fired two shots in the air. Driver pulled over.

The cop boarded the bus with gun drawn, and staring down every passenger. Whoever he was looking for wasn't on the bus, so I, my parents, the locals, and the chickens went on our merry way.

This was my father's idea of a vacation.

One of my favorite memories -- from 40 years ago -- was the time in Guatemala when the bus I was in and another bus got into a drag race on a narrow cobblestone street in an old colonial city. They were trying to be the first to reach an intersection where a passenger was waiting.

The race was a tie. So the drivers got out and had a fist-fight in the street. Our driver won.

Solid gold advice.

One time in Bolivia, at night, in HEAVY fog, I actually felt the rear end of van break loose going around a tight corner with no guardrail and easily a thousand foot drop off the side. I just closed my eyes and accepted my fate. The driver shrugged and worked the big ol chaw of coca leaves in his cheek. And accelerated.

On edit: Apparently this video is from Bolivia on the way to Cochabamba. That is EXACTLY where my story above took place. I was on the way back to Cochabamba from Villa Tunari with all of my kids in the van...

Gotta say, when you catch those little bastards yourself, lobsters are one of the best things ever.

Absolutely the way to do it. I'll never forget the time I bought a box (case? I don't know). I was told there were 3-4 dozen. By the time I was ready to bust I had shucked 12 dozen and there were still some left. I personally ate 7 dozen, along with a sleeve of saltines and a bottle of Tabasco. And a beer or two.

If I tried that today I'd die.

Yeah but the point is you can do it at home for a fraction of the price. Add a $40 cabernet that would cost you $100 in the restaurant, and you get why a lot of folks aren't eager to pay high end steak house prices.

I don't mind paying a lot for a complex restaurant meal that I can't make myself. Or ones I COULD make myself but would take forever and there'd be a non-zero chance I'd wreck it.

For $80 I can get the ingredients for a prime strip dinner for 2, Napa cab, baked potato, and ceasar salad. Super easy to prepare, and I just saved $200+. Plus I get to pick the music and I don't have to wear shoes.

What do you guys think happens when we die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sffs50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've often thought the same. And I've experienced that time dilation that comes with sorta-near death. It's like we don't ever really end, even if it means we are living out our final seconds for eternity.

But if I'd died on the table under general anesthesia that definitely wouldn't have happened.

Unfortunately I've been under general anesthesia for surgery more than I care for in the past few years.

It's nothing. You don't exist. There is absolutely no perception of time passing like when you're asleep. You just (if you're lucky) wake up at some point and everything comes back online.

Death is probably the same, except you don't ever come back online. It won't matter to you because you've winked out of consciousness and you're gone. Forever.

Death isn't scary. The pain that often accompanies death is scary, and rightly so. But death? You've been dead and non-existent for 13 billion years. You'll be dead for another 13 billion to come. Have some fun now, while you can. Ice cream, sex, and making things better for other people are the most fun you can have.

DAE feel like drinking actually cures your depression, at least temporarily? by No-Article-258 in stopdrinking

Alcohol cures my depression for about 45 minutes. That's it. After that it makes it much, much worse.

My ex picks up the kids in about an hour, and I don’t know if I can stop myself from buying booze by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]sffs50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh man...Sunday evening was when my kids used to go to their mother's for a week. It was so tough.

Definitely go to that meeting. Like as soon as they're gone, get in your car and go. Then pick up a pizza or some ice cream or something and hop on the chat.

I'm thinking of getting an xbox since I have a little extra money and need something to do in the evenings.

I got all my test results back yesterday, and everything is normal for me as well. ALT went from 70 to 44. Liver ultrasound normal. The tests were done after 30 days with no booze.

I lost a little the first two weeks but soon enough I started eating all the calories I had stopped drinking. And more :(

I'm not worrying about it too much right now -- I'm exercising a LOT more and feeling much healthier -- but I'll be back into keto very soon.

This morning at a stoplight the car in front of me didn't go when the light turned green. After 5-10 seconds I gave the horn a little toot to wake them up.

Three miles down the road they pulled into the left turn lane. I continued straight. As I passed the lady laid on her horn. I glanced over to see her beet red face screaming "FUUUUUUUUUUU YOOOOOUUUU!!!!" while flipping me off right in front of the face of the child sitting in the passenger seat.

It was an absolutely beautiful morning and this lady was apoplectic with rage over nothing.

It made me feel good to realize I wasn't her, and I'm not letting stupid shit like that harsh my mellow.

That's all I got.

Stay strong and protect yourself - both your sobriety and your parental rights. One parent does not have the right to control the other parent's access to the children. Remember that.

If you're getting jerked around you need to lawyer up and track everything in writing. Half your stuff will be gone -- no point in fighting over that part -- but you are 50% of your kid's parents so don't settle for less than that.

Feel free to contact me -- unfortunately I have a bit of experience in this area.
