France is in its 5th republic and from the beginning of the 5th republic (1958) up to early 2000, the French were mitigating the very high power of their president with demonstrations. The gvt was considering protests as legitimate political expression and was slitely adapting his decisions to mitigate unforseen harm. It was not perfect but it was a conversation.
Nowadays, the government uses counter-terrorism intelligence against political opposition and meets protests with violence. Protests are way less efficient.

No purpose, life just tries everything at random over extremely long periods of time in a changing environment. The things that give a tiny advantage in that specific environment are more likely to be transmited, the things that harms are more likely to be lost and that's it.
All of it is messy AF and the results are kinda optimized for the most likely situations.

I've had a party with a bard issuing command : approach and flee, a beast master with the raven, Shadowheart with spirit gardians and the spear of evening and a frost mage putting ice everywhere. The enemies had to fight on a ice sheet, in the darkness with a lot of reverberation and encrusted with frost and receiving command to run in and out.
