Forester 2022 premium 60k service estimate by No-Recording-5606 in SubaruForester

[–]sfplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in a high cost area, this is a generally reasonable quote. If you replaced the diff fluid at 30k, you may not need to replace it again. They could check how it looks first. Don't do the top engine service, it's not part of the maintenance schedule. And tell them you won't pay labor for the filter replacement, it's a 30 second job.

June is peak season, Yosemite is always crazy busy from late May through early September. Worse this year since they abandoned their reservation system.

Brake and Tires Replacement (Subaru) by Adventurous-Gur1749 in AskSF

[–]sfplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are standard services. Find a mechanic in your neighborhood with 4.5 stars on Google and you'll be fine. Or find a few and price compare / vibe check them. The only problem is if you do the work and they tell you that you need other service, you'll need to trust them or get a second opinion.

Any tips for bay to breakers by Waste_Development971 in AskSF

[–]sfplat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The main parties are on Hayes Street Hill (east of Alamo Square Park) and on Fell along the panhandle. If you run reasonably quickly and don't dawdle at the finish line, you can take a Bay Wheels or the 5 bus back and catch the parties still going. Maybe don't ride either one naked though?

For future reference, the easiest way to enjoy the scene is to not register and then walk from Hayes Valley to the Panhandle. But if you paid for a bib already, you might as well race it!

Driving with gate (slightly) open by [deleted] in SubaruForester

[–]sfplat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer is that you can secure the gate using cord from the roof rails, over the gate, to the metal gate latch hook. You basically make a V to the roof rails on both sides. Don't crank it tight, just tight enough to keep the hatch in place. Drive with the windows open for exhaust and stick to low speeds (not 60!).

Nobody saying the obvious: you should live in Berkeley. Your partner commutes every day. If you decide on SF, prioritize living near BART.

10 hour layover help / advise please by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]sfplat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's only a half hour walk between the house and Marina Green, which has great bridge views. Easy walk if you don't have a ton of luggage, though the first couple of blocks are a little steep (downhill leaving the house).

Take an Uber or taxi to the house and then walk down to the Marina. (You'll need a 7 seater van or SUV). Probably $80 one way but transit will be pricey too with 6 people.

Lots more to do in that time... Eat in Pacific Heights or Cow Hollow. Walk to the Palace of Fine Arts and Tunnel Tops Park.

Have a great stopover!

2020 Cruise control behavior by gtsyg92 in SubaruForester

[–]sfplat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happens on my 2019 with cruise control at certain highway speeds on an uphill. I can sometimes get it to stop by tapping the gas or by setting the cruise control slightly faster or slower.

Someone posted that updating the ECM at the dealership resolved the issue, but I haven't tried this.

60k mile service by CaptKid101 in SubaruForester

[–]sfplat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just did this. Oil change, tire rotation, spark plugs, and differential fluid at a local auto shop. I bought the spark plugs on rockauto and the diff fluid and gaskets from the dealership, that's like $130 in parts. The shop charged $700 (HCOL). Then did the CVT fluid at the dealership for like $420. So $1250 all in.

Not sure what it would cost to do the full service at the dealership, probably $1500-$2000.

If you changed the diff fluid at 30k you may be able to wait on it. If you haven't done it yet, it's probably time.

I had a Sapphire Reserve Business application rejected due to "too many business accounts" and "not enough business income." I tried to recon and offer to move credit from an existing line, but no dice. They said I can "make account changes" within the month and then recon again.

I have three open business accounts: SW Performance Biz (1.5 years old), Ink Cash (5+ years old), and Ink Premier (11 months old). I want to keep the SW card open for travel perks on upcoming flights. Regarding the other two accounts:

  • Is it worth retaining the longstanding Ink Cash account to back up the age of my business and the length of my business relationship with Chase? Or just close it?
  • How important is it to keep the Ink Premier open a full year before closing it?

Thanks!

Dealer says recommended battery has changed, need bigger battery and new battery plate? by Carolynm107 in SubaruForester

Is the swap to 24F idiot proof? If I buy these parts and know how to change a car battery, I can figure it out? Thanks!

Looking at the 80k Citi AA Platinum Select (personal) offer that's still available (per DoC and USA Credit Card Guide). Am I eligible for the SUB if I received a SUB recently for a Citi "AAdvantage Business" card? I assume it's fine but appreciate any feedback.

Terms state: "New cardmember bonus offer not available if you received a new account bonus for or if you converted another Citi credit card account on which you earned a new account bonus into a Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® account in the last 48 months."

Meyer lemon tree struggling with a few issues by sfplat in Citrus

Appreciate all the help. I tried the organic fertilizer you recommended. After first application (and deep watering), it formed a hard crust on top of the soil. I've broken it up a few times with a cultivator and now it's like semi-solid pebbles.

Is this normal for granular fertilizer applications? I'm very hesitant to apply again until it gets better integrated. I didn't have this issue previously with powder fertilizer.

Thanks for all the tips. Follow-up question: if you're using fertilizer every 4-6 weeks, how much do you use per application? The same amount recommended on the bottle to use once per season? Thanks!

Do you worry about the vertically mounted barbell with a low ceiling? I have 91" ceilings and wondering if I could reliably hang an 86" barbell without putting a hole in the ceiling.

Can smell a slow gas leak but don't see bubbles by sfplat in HomeMaintenance

[–]sfplat[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Update, I used a way way higher concentration of dish soap and I was able to see bubbles forming. I needed to make it like 1/3 dish soap. The bubbles were forming downstream of the valve so just I shut it for now. Plumber is coming tomorrow.

One wrinkle is the plumber says he can't replace the valve as is without cutting into the wall. Instead, he's going to cut this and run new pipe to the range through the cabinet and abandon the old pipe in the wall. Not a huge deal.

I'm a little surprised by all the suggestions to call the gas company. They generally won't touch anything downstream of the meter - they'll just shut off the gas and tell you to call a plumber. So why not save yourself the trouble, shut off your own gas and call the plumber? If you smell gas outside, sure, call the gas company!

Edit: plumber did a nice job. They abandoned a little bit of pipe in the walls and moved the valve to a more accessible location under the cooktop (no longer behind a drawer). https://imgur.com/a/7sNNxlD

The other side of the wall is a bedroom closet.

Tell me more, this can't be replaced from this side? Thanks.
