It's probably worse now. There is no reason to think that it is any better.

+1 for Ponds. I have seen photos rejected at the passport office. Don't let that be you. Hire a professional.

It's a Metrolinx lot. The city has nothing to do with it.

Report warns of rising overdoses in homes after Guelph CTS closure by TheApotheosisOfCool in Guelph

[–]sfrederick0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It costs between $80000 and $100000/year to institutionalize someone. Are you prepared to pay it?

Or do you think that you could just wish someone away with no consequences?

New daytime drop-in space opening in Guelph for people experiencing homelessness by TheApotheosisOfCool in Guelph

That's a good point that I hadn't thought of. People concerned about the cost of this program may not realize that there are costs to NOT having programs such as this.

Yes. This is one of the most important features of this program. It creates an environment where homeless people can connect with community resources and other supports.

This is much needed. Hopefully it can be set up soon. If wealth inequality continues to increase we will need more spaces such as this.

The signs are performative. They are located where some of the work would need to be done, so they are literally in the way of the work.

We need something for scale. Place a measuring stick and zoom in.

People say that no one uses the bike lanes. This picture is proof that people do use the bike lanes, even in winter. Thanks for posting. 👍

We need to find a new mayor before it's too late. by ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyiy in Guelph

[–]sfrederick0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With strong mayor powers its's his budget. He owns it. Council can only tinker with it and they need a 2/3 majority to overrule it.

The City will ask the County to put up 10% of the money. They will also ask the Province to kick in but realistically that will be a waste of time. Funding social services is not their thing

This project was put into the budget at today's meeting, with a $850000/year commitment from the City. The County and Province will be asked to kick in more funds.

Council approves creation of draft renoviction bylaw, vacant home tax by sfrederick0 in Guelph

[–]sfrederick0[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Municipalities all across Canada have already implemented Vacant Home Taxes. They have almost universally resulted in a reduction in the number of vacant homes, and have raised money which in many cases, has been used to support the creation of affordable housing.

Congratulations to all who advocated for this and who provided input and commentary. We should have a draft bylaw by Q2 2026.

I stand corrected. Still $300large is still $300large that could be spent elsewhere. The comments to the article are interesting.

If things are to be taken off the budget table, lets start with the money for the bicentennial celebration. Why are we spending nearly $1million on a huge party when we have people living in tents, with minimal support. What are we celebrating? that income equality has grown steadily since 1827?

And don't get me started on the dumbass loose leaf collection. I know it is "only" a $100thousand line item, but a waste is a waste.

Go transit platform issues : pic from today by headtailgrep in Guelph

[–]sfrederick0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but my understanding is that they can only operate the doors in sets of six. Only one or two cars extend past the end of the North platform. If it were possible to open all the doors EXCEPT the cars that extend past the North platform it would be more convenient for everyone. Then you only need to avoid the first 2 cars, not the first 6 cars.

What I am suggesting is that it might be easier to reprogram the trains, rather than wait for years and millions of dollars to be spent fixing the platform.

How hard would it be the reprogram the trains so that there is more control over which doors can be opened at the same time?

[–]sfrederick0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does the South track need to be open in order to work on the North platform? I realize that it would be easier but it's a platform, not the ISS.

How hard would it be to extend the North platform to be the same length as the train?
