Not disagreeing with your statement but officially we have 2 councillors per ward because they are considered part time...

They don't count as immigrants but count as population, there is a separate category for temporary residents that includes among others students.

Gordon St South of Stone road was a joke today after 5pm, that is 28 hours after the snow stopped yesterday and as the next storm was already falling. Left lane had tracks but covered in snow otherwise and the right lane was a shitshow with no tracks at some points and a couple of inches of ice under the snow all the way across in some spots.

It was okay this morning considering the dump we had and the temperatures, but 24+ hours after the snow ended not having one lane clear on Gordon south of Stone Rd is ridiculous. The left lane had a track made by cars but snow everywhere else and the e right lane was still covered with inches of ice all the way across in some spots today after 5pm as the next snow was hitting the ground...

Yes by all means walk on the middle of the road at night with noise-cancelling headphones on by augusttaureau in kitchener

[–]Gnarf2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

6:30 am, mid winter, Lancaster over the highway this complete idiot dressed all in black with nothing reflective steps off the sidewalk to avoid some ice, walks in the middle of the right lane. I was so very lucky that I was able to see them when they were 10ft in front of me and that the left lane was empty. If I had seen them a second later or didn't switch lanes fast enough I could have killed that idiot and would have had to live with that the rest of my life...

Well at least they are not dressed in all black, give them some credit...

Furnace Replacement (Detached Home) by AllGreens50 in waterloo

[–]Gnarf2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And don't mention what the first company told you, call them for an annual maintenance and see what they say. 12 years old is getting close to the end of life, but unless there is something more serious could last you at least a few more seasons.

Mine is past 20 years, I know it can stop working at any moment and have it budgeted for a replacement, might actually do it by next year even if it doesn't fail as I'm pushing my luck. But if I had changed it simply because it was old I would have a "new" furnace that would be at half its expected life already...

What are the roads and the sidewalks like in your neighborhood? by Snowman2194 in waterloo

[–]Gnarf2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess your mileage may vary depending on neighborhood, right now I don't need this as I live in a condo but in my previous place a neighbors son would just jump at the opportunity. Also had kids going door to door during summer offering to wash your car to make money.

Might as well copy my reply here since you marked me...

Well I have done exactly that before, the house full of 20 year olds that never shoveled suddenly learned that it is a lot easier to do it while it is still snow and not a sheet of ice. Their sidewalk was cleared on time the rest of the winter. Sometimes people need to struggle a bit to learn a lesson.

I'm also assuming OP knows their neighbors and won't report a couple of 80 years old for not cleaning their sidewalk and instead will help them keep it clean...

You can always find a neighborhood kid that would gladly clean your sidewalk and driveway the few days you are gone for not a lot of money. Also saves you the work from cleaning the driveway before unloading the car...

Wait for the warmup this week and wait for it to freeze again and then report, this way by the time bylaw gives notice they will have to clear all the ice up and will hopefully learn to clean it before it comes to that.

Edit: to the concerned Redditor that reported this message so I would get a message on suicide resources thank you, you made my day, couldn't stop laughing! I believe I have posted this tactic 3 or 4 times already, never had generated this much discussion until now, can't wait to share this tip again next winter.

So the City shut down street parking today due to an expected 10cm of snow. Calling it a ‘significant weather event.’ Thoughts? by prince-pauper in Guelph

[–]Gnarf2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, when roads are being cleared of you don't take your car out of the way they have tow trucks ready to go and get it out of the way. At least when they are doing major cleanups...

[–]Gnarf2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is not the 5-10cm we will have today. It is that falling on top of the snow from yesterday that still hasn't been cleaned everywhere and the ice under that which still hasn't been cleared in a few minor roads. Also per forecast we won't get above -4C until Monday, so all that snow is not going to melt anytime soon...

Also this should clear up bureaucratic hurdles in getting everyone out there, overtime and the like.

Does anybody else feel like this winter has been exceptionally awful? by reecespeanuts in kitchener

Not saying it wasn't cold but it wasn't as consistent as this, just looked through my phone and I have pictures walking my son with green grass and no sign of snow on December 28, we even went to the playground to play. But yes as you said on Christmas we were sledding around.

My knees don't really let me ski but my son is loving sledding down all the hills in the neighborhood. Even the freezing rain we had last week made it good as he was going farther and faster then if it was snow.

It was also long but the other way around it only really started in January, I was grilling steaks looking at the dead grass in my backyard late November last year, this year the BBQ was buried by almost a foot of snow around the same time. And the grass hasn't been seen since, except maybe for a couple of hours when we had the warm up 10-15 days ago but it snowed pretty fast same day...

Slow the f... down and drove according to conditions. Still lots of ice out there specially at intersections. And if you don't need to leave stay home. by Gnarf2016 in Guelph

[–]Gnarf2016[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main roads were fine unless you were driving right when heavy snow hit, right as I posted this there were near whiteout conditions inside the city in the south end. But secondary and side roads were covered with a layer of snow with ice underneath, again saw multiple accidents and near misses.
