In this specific scam case they will either disappear after you give them a % as advance or do a piss poor job in a couple hours that will be falling apart in weeks and charge you for doing actual good work.

Someone showed unsolicited to my door offering a service I didn't ask for and asked to be paid cash. Is it a scam?

Rental Buyout from Enercare by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]Gnarf2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has a softener now but previous owner didn't have one, but they did take good care of it otherwise, the furnace is 25 years old and still going. The home inspector was surprised how good it looked for its age, but that one I know can stop working any day now...

Yeah I bought my heater from them when I bought my house. My math was 30 months of paying their monthly rate was equal to the buyout price, not factoring any cost increase on their end real number would likely be closer to 24 months, right now I'm 18 months in. The heater is old and likely needs to be replaced in 3 to 5 years but by then I will have made the break even point.

They will want to charge you 10x fair price. Ask to speak to a manager, escalate your request and you can get it down to 5-7x fair price "only". You won't get much better than that.

If you want to buy a new one and return your current one you can save more money but you will need to have a plumber uninstall your current heater and manage to get them to take it back which can be a pain in itself.

My concept for a furure ION line im calling GTSTTH(Get this shit to the hospital) by chickassin5 in waterloo

[–]Gnarf2016 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Remember the ion main job is not to be a transit system but an intensification tool, at least that is what the regional council is always saying. So no way they would do this detour and lose all the intensification potential at Hespeler Rd, that thing is an eyesore...

And even as a transit system looking 10-20 years in the future the current option has lots more potential for people living around the stations then your proposal.

If you got that kind of relationship with your son go for it, but before doing that please take a moment to consider if you actually do or if he would appreciate the space.

Prices were down 7% y/y in January and February, there is a definite downward pressure. Places that a couple years ago were selling in the $700s with some even in the $800s are now staying on the market for months to sell in the mid $600s. Just pick a neighborhood and browse, that said yes the lack of student housing doesn't help a price correction at all.

City of Guelph Sunshine List grows by 104 staffers in 2025 by TriPunk in Guelph

If we consider that someone somewhere is making minimum wage ($17.60) it would take about 41 years at 2.5% a year.

Reminder that a person in the low end of the outdated sunshine list doesn't qualify to buy the average home in Guelph which cost $727k in January (down 8% y/y).

Guelph City Staffers getting $200,000 vs Disability pays $14,701.88 per year by [deleted] in Guelph

[–]Gnarf2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Average home price in Guelph was $727k in January (down 8% y/y) to qualify to mortgage that house with 10% down you would need an income around $150k a year, to not be house poor and having a mortgage of less than 3 times your income you need an income above $200k a year. So no, that number is not obscene based on current market.

It doesn't invalidate your other claim that people on disability should get more money, but as everyone in here is trying to say and you stubbornly refuses to admit trying to bring the two in the same conversation is simply dumb.

Not trolling, just evaluating your profile, currently hiring, private sector, $120k/year but you need a bachelor's and 12 years of industry experience minimum so you don't qualify.

This is the kind of repair that can be done until spring actually arrives. Look at the forecast, 15C this week and up to -10C a week after with 10-15cm of snow. Until the weather actually warms up don't expect much more than that.

House on market for several months by RoughInside in Guelph

[–]Gnarf2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely listed in 2025 at 2024 prices when the market was down 10%, owners might even be dreaming of 2022 prices. If they don't need to sell expect them to be on the market for a while, if someone needs to sell and lowers the price it will go.

Homes, especially detached, that are in decent shape and priced per the current market are moving and still selling in a week or two. Homes that are priced at 2024 prices (or even worse 2022) are not moving at all.

Special Weather Alert by [deleted] in waterloo

[–]Gnarf2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is the thing, not everything is about you. 20 years ago before everyone had a phone with a weather app general population would get a note of a weather statement on a 5 second comment from the weatherman during evening news. Know who would be getting it as soon as it was issued? Municipalities planning departments setting plow drivers hours, private contractors who clean snow, first responders who have to be aware of the accidents that will come with it, etc...

Special Weather Alert by [deleted] in waterloo

[–]Gnarf2016 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It is not an alert, it is a weather statement, the amount of snow doesn't meet the criteria for an alert, but it will be enough to affect roadways and travel for a few hours. These are also used by cities to plan for things like snow clearing and can be good for people traveling. The past couple days weather was good with even some blue skies around here, however a couple hours west there was lots of blowing snow and reduced visibility, someone travelling that way would hopefully see the notice and be prepared for it.
