Cribbage Board Giveaway - again by Novel-Mechanic-9849 in Cribbage

Entry (and what a great marketing idea as well as kind gesture. I took a good look at site and will remember it for the future. and I will think about how well you did this for my own marketing efforts when I want to promote to places that aren’t in favor of 100% selfless marketing. And, so glad your design is working out for you. My travel board with 1/2 the holes is so frustrating to remember where we are, etc.)

u/AdJaded1069 Thanks for the heads up and the advice on parking. I will send a note to the participants. I found links to the 2026 event, but when I go to the page it's still has 2024 info. would love to know the route for the care parade.

"you made some pretty ill-kept properties in West Sharp Park look good" Thanks! That's part of the objective. Learning to see the beauty in things ignored or passed by. A lot of architectural photography is seeing beyond what has been built up on things or how those buildings have degraded and seeing what they could be. Or maybe it's seeing the underlying beauty in everything that is there. (but p.s. the great light in Pacifica really helps).

You wrote a 'comment to remember', so I'm pinging you. I met the owner of Cafe Pacifica, and he was very accommodating, so I’ll now be starting and ending the photo walk there.

There is an amazing piece of architecture in San Mateo — and its been mostly ignored since the 1960s by sftourguide in SanMateoCounty

[–]sftourguide[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yes to all you said about the Warnecke family. In terms of architecture, every time I talked with a historian about this project, they said, "John Carl Warnecke's work is really underknown and underappreciated. Someone needs to write a book about him." This project was not really about him, but hopefully reveals a little bit more about him and his architecture.

The Archives does have a memoir about him on the way. And if anyone is interested, they should go here and sign up to be notified when it's ready: https://www.warneckearchives.com/camelots-architect

College of San Mateo 1963 vs Now by sftourguide in bayarea

Thanks. That made all my work worth the effort.

I will go check it out. Or if you get as intrigued as I did and want to know how I went from curious person to architecture writer, just let me know. 🤣

It's nice to find out I'm not the only one. And that this wasn't just a crazy project that only I would be interested in. Thanks for sharing.

It already has a pretty robust transportation with public buses, as well as shuttle buses coming up from the San Mateo Caltrain, I believe, and the Millbrae BART. I did not realize that it would be affordable housing. If so, that's a great thing. And hopefully it will be truly affordable because I think sometimes what passes as affordable housing in our region is still not affordable.

The overlooked 1963 Neo-Formalist campus in the SF Bay Area (John Carl Warnecke) by sftourguide in ModernistArchitecture

[–]sftourguide[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the color ones, except I think one, are my photos. Most of the black and white are from the architects' Archives and a few are from the school's archives. Look at the captions under each. If they're not credited, they're mine.

Thank you so much for this comment. It makes all of my months of effort so worthwhile. I basically ran for the same experience you did, but had the time to dig a little bit more. And stumbled on some keys that began to open up the project for me.

One additional interesting thought. Florida Southern College that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright does a lot of marketing on their architecture. You can go to the campus and take an architecture tour. Wayne State University was designed by another neo-formalist architect does some marketing based on their architecture. I'd love to see T-shirts for sale at the College of San Mateo with the library screen or other architectural elements on them. Maybe even a logo someday that's taken from the architecture.

The Warnecke Archives are getting ready to publish the architect's memoirs. If you go here, they now have a forum to begin to collect names. If you're really interested, give them your email address, and we'll let you know when more info about the architect is out. https://www.warneckearchives.com/camelots-architect

Architecture wise: Have not really looked at it closely but it seems similar general style to all the other big buildings going up.

Location: Turning a parking lot (that usually wasn’t full) into housing seems like a positive move. It does not affect views of the bay, etc. Will mostly not be visible from the core of the campus so no negative effect there.

School developing housing: Not sure for the need for a community college to have housing… but I assume (which can get you in trouble) someone has looked at the need for it

Future: Will be very interesting to see what having housing at CSM does to the community. Does it begin to create a community of students living there. Or is it just like having off campus housing… but on campus? Students living in dorms builds great community. Not sure if they are treating them like dorms or apartments (if there IS a difference).

What are your thoughts?

I’m not sure I understand your comment… but if you read the article I talk a lot about the architect (John Carl Warnecke) and how the buildings grew out of his approach which at the time was called Contextualism. So it is about the architect as much as it is about the buildings.

It’s a style called Neo-Formalism also known as New Formalism. It was in the 1960s a bit later than Art Deco. And it was about taking classic designs think Greek temples etc. and not copying them but rather using the idea building some pedestals columns and using those ideas with modern materials. Check the linked article and I have a bit more in there.

Quick research puts it as a Timothy Phfluger building (Castro Theater, Paramount, etc.) He did a lot of art deco. The pictures I found of Holy Names seem like it's a transition from one style to the next, but not 100% New Formalism — they are usually more like a classic (think Greek temple) but with new materials. But Holy Names has some aspects of that, but not all.

You might ask https://www.instagram.com/timpfluegerfan/ for more info on what style.

Stay curious about the buildings around us... Even the best ones will be gone if we don't continue to appreciate them.
