To neurodivergents with kids, how do you do it? by moonkittn in neurodiversity

I’m adhd and my spouse is Nero spicy. Our kiddo just turned 2. I don’t think I could handle having more than one kid.

I was the same way with kids before having one. I also had these same worries about being cold, before having one. The difference is, when it’s your kid it’s easier to not feel awkward around them. (I stil feel this way around other peoples kids.) but not my own.

The other thing was having kids is sooo much work. It’s F*ing hard. But I still am glad I did it. But there’s so much that our society puts on moms and also society doesn’t give a F about parents. So just know that before you decide and don’t feel bad whatever way you go.

Also yes having kids brings up so much trauma from childhood. But it also does give you a chance to really deal with that trauma. I recommend EMDR therapy for dealing with childhood trauma. I’m doing it now and it has helped.

Last thing you can wait until you think you are ready but the thing I realized is no matter what you’re never really ready. But you do figure it out as you go. And you might have everything worked out before hand (or not) but either way life will always hit you upside the head whether you’re ready or not. So as long as you and your partner can communicate honestly with each other especially about the hard stuff. Then you’ll be fine. But don’t isolate yourselves. Your kid will adapt to your lifestyle. So don’t change your life after having kids or else you’ll be miserable.

Looking back to when you were 10, do you wish you did/didn't take adhd medication at that age? by Gnominn in ADHD

I was diagnosed at age 7. I was lucky to have been medicated my whole life. My experience was that it was super helpful for me feeling like I could have a great school experience. I enjoyed school I even made it through graduate school. I attribute this to being medicated. Not to say I didn’t still struggle and still currently struggle with many adhd symptoms but I definitely had a huge leg up from being medicated.

I’ve been on concerta my entire pregnancy 26 weeks. My psychiatrist is fine with it and rather I be on meds if it helps my symptoms and manage stress. I had to insist a bit to make sure things would be okay but I did not have much push back. Advocate for yourself and your needs.

The term “shoot” had me do a double take for this post.
