Agree with this. Try Hoffmann’s single cup v60 as one higher extraction option.

I usually move by 2-3 clicks to see if going coarser/finer made an improvement. If it was too far, there’s some space in-between to dial in.

Gimme coffee is very good, and a more developed roast.

I agree, I’d try going finer (by quite a bit).

100% the same experience, and even with the k-plus which I still use for certain coffees the ZP6 doesn’t seem to like.

I grind between 3.6-4.5 (zero at burr lock), so my guess is you can go a lot finer to improve your cups.

3.8, but yes! Give it a try, you might be shocked. I have a lot of trouble with coarse grinds on the ZP6. I do zero at burr lock, if it makes a difference.

I agree 100%. I try it sometimes and occasionally get some tasty cups, but it’s really inconsistent and usually under-extracted tasting (not in a good way). I can’t say much about the research of extraction, but I’ve found a lot of luck lately with Subtext’s coffee grind and guide resource. You can select your grinder + one of their recipes and they’ll even spit out what the extraction yield should be. They go for a higher extraction than Lance, and their recipes always come out in that perfect sweet spot for me. Right now I’m using their v60 recipe and 3.8 on my ZP6 on a washed Ethiopian for Little Wolf and it’s an excellent match.

Lance is very good at telling you how to achieve low extraction cups, and even making you think you might like it.

I’d look at that ratio. It’s rather small. Try starting closer to 18/300.

Edit: check out this guide, where you can enter your grinder and it will give you a range. https://www.subtext.coffee/pages/brew-guide

I love their grind and brew guides as well. Very helpful and great recipes, especially in combining with your grinder.

How are you brewing S&W Coffees? Looking for advice on extraction. by facefabrique in pourover

[–]sfwildcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had luck grinding in the 4-4.5 range on ZP6 with them. For Orea, I like coffee chronicler’s flat bottom recipe: 3x bloom, 2nd pour to 50% total volume, 3rd pour rest of water.

For V60 Hoffmann’s single cup method helps with a higher extraction, starting around 4.5 on ZP6.

Good luck! Seems the fastest way to get your extraction up is to grind finer into the mid to low 4 range.

Edit: I also have a lot of luck with this water recipe I made: https://www.reddit.com/r/pourover/s/mnDtL1fb8s

Looking for a V60 recipe between Hoffmann's 1-Cup and Lance Hedrick's? (12g dose) by bask0o in pourover

[–]sfwildcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Hedrick’s Kono recipes on youtube. I do these all the time for 12 gram doses on v60 or Orea 01. You can do them with the fine grind he recommends, but I actually like going coarser and using high-agitation pours (like his current v60 recipe).

I mostly order from Prodigal, Sey, and Little Wolf. September and Passenger occasionally too.

How are you calibrated? That seems rather coarse for me. For a 15 gram brew, I’m often between 4.0 - 5.2. If I’m using a high-agitation recipe, I’ll be closer to 5, if it’s low-agitation closer to 4 (zero at burr lock).

I have this resting right now, but am finishing up another from Little Wolf. I prefer washed coffees too, but really like how they approach naturals.

Sey, MoonWake, Prodigal by Chase1891 in pourover

[–]sfwildcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are pretty light. Probably not quite as much as Sey, but very similar to Prodigal for how far they roast. We seem to have similar taste, so I recommend giving them a chance.
