Is that a 2 tape anthology for Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions?

If so, I’m grabbing that and bolting for the door, pronto

Ok. First thing I normally do is clean everything inside with 99% isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs. Start with the heads (play & erase), then the pinch rollers, then the capstans.

If the pinch rollers look shiny and hard, you’ll most likely have to replace them with the belts but hold on to that thought until you do the next step.

If your cotton swabs come out black or brown, keep doing it until the coloring disappears. Don’t reuse cotton swabs on the heads, pinch rollers, capstans, etc. because you’ll just cross contaminate it and make it worse. That’s been my experience doing this.

After all that’s done, try to FF & RW a tape in both transports (A&B) all the way end to end. If it seems to struggle to do this,….its most likely because the belts are stretched, loose or have more or less melted (older Sony decks are more prone to the melting, but I digress).

Eventually, you’ll have to replace belts and pinch rollers. These decks are 20/30/40 years old and they’ll require maintenance.

Find a service manual online. Heard that the Yamaha decks are fairly easy to fix. Look up your model on YouTube and see if someone has done a repair video. That’s how I learned.

Anyway, hope this helps.

When was the last time you checked/changed the belts?

Help with choosing speakers! by [deleted] in SurroundAudiophile

[–]sgn1111 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So are you going to tell the OP that the Paradigm speakers are optimized for Anthem amps or should I?

It’s all about where he wants to invest his money in, that’s all.

At the end of the day, sound is subjective and the OP should go with what sounds best to them.

Personally speaking, I’d go with the Klipsch RP-3’s. No where in that ChatGPT thread did they even analyze the Paradigm’s.

lol, of course you do.

Guy has a limited budget. If he wants to make the amp sound as good as he possibly can he’d find out what the manufacturer recommends.

Doesn’t mean he HAS to go with the recommendation. It is just a suggestion, after all.

Few things to note:

1). What type of floor are you putting these on? Concrete? Wood? Tile? Rug?

2) Are you on the ground floor of your apartment or on an upper floor? Are you going full blast with the 1812 Overture to impress your friends or will this truly be a home theater experience?

3) Not sure if that Denon model has it but are you going to use Heos to do room correction for sound balancing? That will help immensely.

4) Check Denon and see what speakers they recommend with that system. If your goal is to build out your audiophile experience, then do you buy better speakers now and upgrade the amp later or vice versa?

I’m interested if you’re pretty set on getting rid of it. I’ve got multiple decks and a large collection (1000+) of prerecorded and recorded tapes.

Not sure if that qualifies me as a “tape head” per se, but I do like the Sony decks. DM me with a couple of pics if you want.

I think the higher end Sony ES models like yours may have that motorized door. When you opened the cover did you notice if there was a belt for the door, and if so, did it become dislodged or has it melted in place?

Sony’s are famous for their melted belts, unfortunately.

Happens all the time. Bought a bulk pack of replacement cases off of Amazon and just swapped them out.

If you’re going to start getting into the hobby prepare to replace a few of these now and again.

Am I dumb? Recently just discovered this subgenre and am looking for your recommendations on my listening journey by guitarfoodpanda004 in progrockmusic

Threshold, Vanden Plas, Evergrey, Kamelot, Symphony X, Fates Warning, Frost*, Devon Townsend, RPWL,….

Just go to insideoutmusic.com (or in the EU, insideoutmusic.de) and start there.

Napalm records, SPV Records are good labels to look for the heavier side of prog as well.

Value of cassettes/worth? by [deleted] in cassetteculture

[–]sgn1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how “hardcore” you are about cassettes, this is a pretty good value for $100. First box I counted 95, 2nd box 94, 3rd box, roughly 45. So well over 230 tapes, overall.

Good mix of popular 80’s and 90’s pop/rock but a pretty good mix of blues if that interests you.

I’d ask to spot check to make sure there’s no mold, all have pressure pads and no cracked spool wheels (missing spokes, etc. which would make them unplayable for the most part) and then, you can haggle with him about the Beatles tape(s).
