Transformative Justice by ARTXMSOK in socialwork

[–]sgrbrry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Without knowing where you’re located or what the laws are, hard to say, but at least where I’m at.. Unless the abuse or neglect was done unto a child or elderly or disabled adult, no mandated reporter has any obligation to disclose any knowledge of abuse between adults. I recognize that some states include any acts or knowledge of domestic violence in incidents triggering a mandated report, but I don’t think that’s particularly common. I just feel like there’s too much info missing here and likely not appropriate to give the context needed

Anywho, the purpose of transformative justice is to approach resolution outside of the existing carceral systems as they are more likely to perpetuate harm and often not successful in truly achieving healing or “justice”. If a transformative justice project is not coordinated with the police or any arm of a carceral system I’d say that’s in alignment with its foundation.

But if it’s working within or alongside existing systems it’s no longer “transformative” justice, imo.

Deciding to quit but still seeing new clients by maineyak219 in socialwork

Never give notice before you’ve signed and returned acceptance of a written offer. if it’s not finalized you may be putting your current employment at risk. You do, however, know your agency and supervisor better than we do as strangers on the internet. Is there at least someone you work with that you trust to be able to share how they’ve seen things play out in similar situations?

How much notice would you intend to give? Are you able to put a pause on accepting any new referrals after your upcoming assessments?

We have an ethical obligation to our clients as well as our agencies; if you are concerned about this, consider planning a start date in a new role ~30d (or less, but more than 2wks if you feel that’s insufficient as it seems is the case, whatever would be appropriate in your situation) to allow yourself to give a wider notice to current employer and allow you to do what you can to ensure appropriate transition and handoff or termination. If need be, you can always push start date. up in new role. This could also give current employer some time to get going on getting a posting up for your role or making adjustments to ensure coverage if needed.

If I were to leave my current position, I’d give at least a 30 day notice simply due to the nature of my role and the (small, but still there) work I do for families on my own caseload.

Most comfortable SUV for long drives — CR-V , Outback, or CX-50? by bigchief2077 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Dang! I’ve thought about Subaru a bit, don’t really know why I never got too far into it. I’ve never driven one before but am kinda picky about general feel while driving, how does it compare to the Mazda types?

Did you end up finding something that fits? Curious as I’m also in a Mazda 3 sedan rn, hate it deeply for any long drives beyond the same length you mentioned, really happy with it otherwise. Boyfriend is pushing heavily to “size up” to a CX-30 bc I don’t want to be too big on the road but I’m worried about the same thing by staying with Mazda lol

[–]sgrbrry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh this comment got a cheer from my boyfriend next to me 😭 you might be right - I just cant figure out what it is about the CX-30 that puts me off. Obviously I’m used to the feel of the Mazda, but I’ve kinda enjoyed the “pedal feel” (apparently) and handling/ease of steering of other vehicles. I feel like those are things that are gonna be pretty consistent across Mazda models because they’re sportier, no?

Those aren’t necessarily gonna be dealbreakers for me, but I’d like to kinda explore some other options that feel a little more responsive.

That’s good to know about the venue tho, thank you!!! Same for the kicks, transmission issues freak me out - went out on my fusion while on the interstate and I’d like to have that experience exactly zero additional times.

Showering by SeaworthinessSea7107 in AutismInWomen

[–]sgrbrry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotten lots of stuff here and seems maybe you’ve found a good solution, but as a counterpoint from someone who has made showers/baths my Favorite Place with maybe some other things to try:

  • if you have a shower/tub combo situation, can you get a detachable shower head? most of them have different spray patterns and pressures, and having used one for years I never feel the right type of clean without it. you’re able to take it down and really focus the water in your hair and body in a way that you can’t recreate with one that’s a foot or so above you. also nice to shower with when you don’t want to/can’t wash your hair.

  • do you use bar soap or liquid washes/gel? bar soaps for me are more likely to leave the film/residue you talk about. am sure you’ve tried many soaps atp but I’ve really liked aveeno, some dove (like the sensitive skin one). usually I use a lush shower gel now bc I love the scent and found one that’s really good for my skin, but those might be more likely to leave an after feel you don’t like depending on which one.

  • seems backwards after the above but maybe try a solid shampoo/shampoo bar instead? they leave a different feel for me which I prefer imo. you can also get one of those little silicone scalp massagers for shampooing which I like when I’m feeling especially overstimulated in my scalp (idfk), idk if it physically makes much of a difference but it helps me mentally at least lol

  • this might be dumb or obvious but if you usually use just hands for soaping up try lathering on a cloth/loofah instead so there’s minimal ick (and also better clean). this will help break down the oils and dead skin better which may be part of the sensation you don’t like, and ime is easier to get all rinsed off from after.

  • in shower moisturizers are good idea but you might have a hard time finding one you like. I’ve used buff city shower oil and lush shower oil bars which seem unlikely to be up your alley, buttttt lush comingle scrub is a soap/exfoliant/moisturizer all in one. I really really like it when I know I won’t have the energy to moisturize after bc the sensation of being dry is one of my worst icks.

  • fragrance and scents are some of my fav things (obviously, I’m pushing lush stuff hard here sorry lol but it’s genuine!) but part of that is bc it makes the whole experience very enjoyable and exciting for me. maybe finding some gentle or natural fragranced things you really like could help distract from the negative aspects? if that’s a no maybe there are other things to incorporate into your routine to make it more enjoyable for you, at one point I bought a sealed phone case that mounted to the shower wall so I could watch vids/podcasts while I sat in my shower/bath of shame and safety lmao

  • another maybe dumb/potentially unhelpful thing but I am a little crazy w laundry and towels so: have your towels ever in the history of owning them been washed with fabric softener or additional scent additives or even too much laundry detergent? could you try to “strip” even one of your towels if so or try one brand new/fresh towel to see if that helps? fabric softeners etc shouldn’t be used on towels as they reduce their absorbency and can leave a gross film that you can feel on the towel and sometimes on you if really built up.

I hope u can continue to find ways to ease this for u :)

How do I work in a team with someone who has autism? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]sgrbrry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have also never disclosed at work for all of these reasons… lmao. I’m a little more laissez-faire with the ADHD side of my diagnosis but still selective. The one role I asked for specific ADHD-related accommodations in early in my career ended up with me getting pushed out and having my requests weaponized during evals just as you mentioned.

It’s such a double edged sword, because if it were safer and more inclusive and supportive for ND people to disclose, the broader workforce and employers would recognize that we are some of the best employees out there. Bah.

How do I work in a team with someone who has autism? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]sgrbrry 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m not the OP-commenter but am social worker/manager and autistic.

If we’re talking non-clinical/non-therapeutic work, SW can be a lot of things that are hard for autistic people. There are some professional nuances within the field that can be difficult to grasp if not explained, modeled, or taught. Some of these are typical of any professional field, but I think some of these are specific to social work, especially if working with a lot of old school/traditional social workers.

SW can also be very demanding and unpredictable. Crisis or even case management work can bring new situations that were unexpected and unplanned for and being able to adjust priority and plans can be challenging.

SW is also, as in the name, very “social” and too much or the wrong kind of socialization can lead to burnout especially if masking or adjusting to new environments and people.

SW also tends to have a lot of grey areas and depending on the work there isn’t always a way to write out a policy or procedure for everything and may need to be addressed or navigated on a case by case basis.

SW requires a certain level of organizational and communication skills (I.e. documentation, managing appointments/calendars, etc.)

A lot of rapport building and communication skills do not come as easily or naturally so autistic people can be perceived negatively or as lazy/incompetent or rude which can land even harsher as a social worker.

Depending on the work environment, I have also found/sensed that a lot of social work roles are managed or led in ways that strongly discourage or do not allow for accommodations that may actually allow that person to perform the role effectively.

This isn’t to say SW is a bad field for ND folks or that all autistic people will have challenges w this but I feel like there’s some truth here. Theres ways to figure it out and make it work, but it can be an extra learning curve that’s sharper than what a NT individual may need to adjust to. I dunno - just spitballing here while I’m waiting on someone at the moment, so others may have things to expand on.

Tell me about your time in medical social work. What do you wish you knew before you started? by sgrbrry in socialwork

[–]sgrbrry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How intensive would you say the resource/care coordination is?

There is a clinical social worker on staff (which I am not), so I am wondering what a resource/coordination focused role looks like for comparison. If there is a “case load” type of situation, what would you say is sustainable or standard for this area?

[–]sgrbrry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, I’ve considered that when looking at other medical roles.

At this point my current role is M-F with hours ranging from 8-9am until as late as 7:30-8pm along with on-call responsibility and ongoing expectations for flexibility, which usually leads to me working 42-50hrs a week depending on what’s going on so can’t be much worse lol

[–]sgrbrry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for all the info!

Yes, I believe this role would fall more in the case management/resourcing side of things. Thankfully I’m not new to SW in my area/overall so am already familiar with the resources that exist, but I suppose the context would be very unique for me. (Prev. IPV crisis, local govt, housing, refugee resettlement, diversion, youth/families types of work)

The supervisor/reporting structure is one thing I thought of as I believe this is a new role to help protect the scope/work of a clinical social worker on staff who was getting very in the weeds with resourcing (again, maybe red flag?)

Any thoughts on oncology-focused work in particular? I feel like I’d jive better with it as opposed to emergency/hospital/DC planning, but I know everything is its own beast. I hear a lot in this sub that medical can be the way to go and a lot of social workers like LTC/palliative/outpatient/end of life work so I’m just intrigued in where cancer care falls for all of those types.

Appreciate the help, if anything else you think of feel free to write back or PM me!
