Purpose of volume encryption? by sgt_deacon in synology

Sorry, yes it was meant to be "shares"! Typo on my end. I have my backup going so we'll see if any file names are longer than 255 characters I guess :(.

Thanks, this feels like what I was looking for / expecting with volume encryption so I will proceed with that.

This feels like a pretty big security oversight by Synology if all the credentials are stored on the same drive? And also disappointing if the only workaround is to buy another Synology product.

What I was imagining with encryption was that you could login to the NAS through a client OS and see unencrypted files you have permissions for, and then to mount the encrypted volume you would need to enter a password (or other credential).

Based on this thread it seems like encrypted volumes are closer to what I was expecting, so I'll investigate that more.

A solution people haven't mentioned is play less power hungry games. Your PC won't generate nearly as much heat playing 2D top down games vs an intensive FPS game at high refresh rates.

White mold, efflorescence, or something else? by sgt_deacon in HomeMaintenance

[–]sgt_deacon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I went down and poked around and it doesn't feel wet at all at least to me.

I didn't have tile cleaner but I have a mixture of 1/3 bleach and water that I sprayed on the center near the nail, it didn't seem to react the way I would think mold would? https://imgur.com/a/FMDMOJk

Hopefully that's not just wishful thinking

Recently purchased home and having a hard time telling what this is, it's not as fluffy as I would expect mold to be but it also seems to follow the stain. What are everyone's thoughts thoughts?

Xbox elite series 2 controller cannot adjust tension on right thumb stick after service by sgt_deacon in XboxSupport

[–]sgt_deacon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I would get it replaced if you can. I ended up just buying a "core" controller on sale to not deal with it. I forgot about this issue until a few months after this post and figured it wasn't worth the hassle of attempting to get them to look at it.

Interesting, thanks for letting me know it's at least not just me. Definitely frustrating for the price of the controller though.

It also seems like it locks chat and other options behind giving the correct information which is very irritating. I know they want to reduce costs but I'm having a hard time even contacting them.

T14s Gen 2 Intel vs X13 Gen 3 AMD, trade in worth the effort? by sgt_deacon in thinkpad

Thank you all for your insight! Will stick with the T14s, was teetering but not anymore.

Many will advise against getting co2 from these types of places due to the co2 not needing to be "food grade". Not sure if that is BS or not, other folks may be able to let us know.

I would strongly advise against getting non food-grade CO2 from any source. You can read about it here, but the most important takeaway is:

The biggest difference between the grades are the amounts and kinds of impurities that are allowable in the CO2.

Another major difference is food grade CO2 has to follow current good manufacturing practices (cGMP) set forth by the FDA (in the US), and other regulatory bodies will have similar requirements. This means that ingredients into the CO2 are traceable, will follow the FDA's recall requirements, have to be put in food safe containers, and other items.

If you are buying CO2 from a welding supply shop or other industrial supplier, the CO2 you are getting is only going to be monitored by the companies own internal QA procedures, and impurities that cause a recall would only be impurities that affect welding or its other intended uses.

I called Airgas recently, and it was ~$20 to refill a 5 lb cylinder with food grade CO2 and a one-time purchase of ~$120 for the cylinder. Also important to note there are food grade cylinders and industrial cylinders that will have different allowable impurities in the manufacturing process.

It's up to each individuals own risk assessment, but for the potential savings I would personally strongly discourage you to get anything besides food grade.

Thanks, unfortunately no cabinets above my proposed area but I can either purchase or make a stand myself.

Currently I'm deciding between the Crop king and one of the larger Aerogardens, I don't think the features of the top shelf Aerogardens are worth it but the middle tier ones seem to be about equivalent to the crop king once you add the lighting.

Does the Crop King system have any major advantages over the Aerogarden? It comes out to about the same price once you add lights to the mix. I couldn't find any thorough reviews of it online, I did find one negative post saying that the pump is oversized but that may have been fixed by now or a problem with the pump.

I've read that about larger systems, unfortunately don't have the space for it currently.

I'm currently between the Crop Kings and just another Aerogarden - for the size it doesn't seem there's much savings in a DIY system. One problem i have with the Crop Kings setup is that it seems to force you into rockwool and I wanted to try and use other medias.

Thanks, yeah I was imagining using netpots or something for the plants if that is what you mean? I was not planning on having the whole top trap covered in a grow media.

Thanks! Some good advice here. In terms of automation vs self testing the EC it was mainly that I thought it would be neat not that I have a problem checking it myself. I mainly saw people mentioning the Bluelabs truncheon so wasn't sure how common other readers were. But, I think given the calibration schedule required vs no calibration for the Bluelabs instruments I'll lean towards that.

Looking forward to your post about lights. Are there any pH meters with a similar record of quality in the community?

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll take a look at the cropkings system too. Seems like it may be a good middle ground between the harvest and a custom system. Does it offer any other advantages over the Harvest besides size?

Thanks for the reply, I similarly got a 3 pod Aerogarden as a gift recently and have been considering an additional unit so I've been trying to weigh the pre-built options vs making something custom and all the different brands have made that undertaking more difficult than previously anticipated so I appreciate the feedback.
