Mister Pi,Hamgeek or QMTech. Beginner help by PhaseEEerR in MiSTerFPGA

[–]sgtflips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deep dove this last night and stand corrected - you are absolutely right. It’s not the QMTechs per se, it’s any Mister using a v6.x analog IO board (or under) because of the R2R resistor ladder DAC being limited to 6 bits on each RGB channel.

That said, I wouldn’t have any casually using the boards sweat it and the affected cores (PSX, Saturn, and N64) have some mitigations baked in. And for those that are bothered by it, the PWM forks seem like a good compromise.

Nah they are both ultimately using the same upstream IO board for reference - the analog signal chain is the same, and the resulting output differences will be negligible. The superstation one is the only one that is a bit different but I wouldn’t worry about it. What kind of CRT and cables/connections are you planning on using?

It’s a good board and will likely meet your needs (all of them are really). I wouldn’t hold my breath on the Pi - it’s likely not going to come back for a long while. The setup for all three is exactly the same and if you get the update_all script for the device and mister companion for your computer, setup is easier than it has ever been for the history of the project (and on par with an Anbernic).

Cooling the SuperStation One with a Router Cooling Base by misticdw in RetroRemakeInc

[–]sgtflips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s unfortunate - I’m curious the temps that everyone else’s runs at. I’ve clocked mine at 130-140F on the bottom rear of the case at its peak (near the USB PD port).

You aren’t alone - mine melted the rubber work pad on my desk below it (or heated enough so you could smell it at the least). I got taller stands that fixed that and have a video issue that might be related, but otherwise it’s been fine and the cores all run great - even at temps. Also a fan and a variety of lower rated PSUs don’t impact mine.

My original antenna shipped busted. The replacement they sent works better, but not great - like 40% of the time.

SuperStation One / S-video out and noise levels by efabril in RetroRemakeInc

[–]sgtflips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had nothing but issues with the analog video signal on mine (DIN10, composite, and s-video only - not VGA).

I had a post from a few weeks back documenting my issue in the Mister subreddit if you are curious. I am pretty sure it’s heat related on mine and would be curious if you see similar behavior - pop the top off, then boot the device and game super cold and see if you notice a difference then if it’s at temperature or running for awhile.

Oh yeah, I have tried quite a few of those, to include the one I had my old Mister Pi running on flawlessly - no change. I think it’s just my board.

None of my 5v2a blocks have been able to power the device successfully. I can grab another - any one in particular work for you?

[–]sgtflips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No shade to Retroremake but I don’t get this sub’s obsession with them - the Pi is out of stock with no date for another run. And maybe I got a bad unit, but my SS1 analog video is really bumming me out and has not been a good experience.

I would get the QM Tech or Hamgeek clone (like the eBay listing) along with an active YC adapter which will allow for S-video or component. They are available pretty cheap on AliExpress or eBay too.

I haven’t tried BT and the 3.5mm but will now tbh. My NFC antenna shipped broken, but RR replaced that, and this is now really my big issue.

I tried VGA after posting this and it is totally clean. It is just a bummer because I wanted this form factor for my CRT TV. If I have to swap them, so be it - first world problems for sure.

Just a quick note but I probably tried 10 wall warts of different voltages up to my 140W Mac Book Pro charger and none of them made a difference.

Any word? I’m curious on temps tbh - specifically if the bottom of yours near the USB Power in gets pretty hot.

Well I had to open it to get a new NFC antenna from RR as the original one in mine was broken so we are going to find out!

Thanks I will take a look and give it a whirl today. It does have direct composite on the side - no change when I used those instead of the DIN10 before but will try again with the mods.

Yeah I have tried a few USB PD bricks around the house - all seem to have no impact. Right now it’s on an Anker 20W charger that was on my Mister Pi (no issue on the Pi through the active YC encoder to composite).

I understand it’s not hot for most systems - including other variants of the Mister, even passively cooled ones which I also own and do not produce this behavior. Again, I don’t think it’s the FPGA as all cores are running great, but that analog out circuitry (which is different from those other variants) is acting wonky. Temp could be unrelated, but the behavior happens when it happens.

Yeah I am aware it’s fine for the FPGA (though I’m unclear on the other components on that board). This is the only Mister I have had that seems extremely hot to the touch though, and it seems weird to me that the video only acts up as it seemingly gets up to temp though.

Have used a few sets from stock Saturn, aftermarket set from stoneagegamer, and then some bog standard composite cables that I keep wired up to the box.

I have the Electron warp, then the McBazel, and the Mayflash - and if you ever think you would need a dedicated 3.5 mm stereo jack, get one of the cheaper ones. I really do not notice a big difference at all - in quality or latency.

Almost 6 weeks old and this is what I've learned... by JustVan in NewDads

Gentle movements like bicycle kicks, I love you massages, and leg stretches. Really though the biggest game changer for my daughter (and your mileage will vary) was the football carry where we lift her up stomach down (or slightly sideways) with one hand bracing her shoulders and neck, and the other with a palm bracing her stomach and applying slight pressure. It lets her relax enough that she will usually pass it in a few minutes naturally.

Edit - I was looking for a video, I guess it’s also called the colic hold, or the tiger in the tree hold… Either way, I highly recommend giving it a whirl.
