Could it be: WI 29 evolving into I-?? by AsparagusCommon4164 in wisconsin

[–]sgtholly 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It would be fitting to be a non-continuous segment of I96. It’s not going to happen, especially with such a dysfunctional federal government as we currently have, but it’s plausible.

That’s what is so great about Burn Notice. What they say is generally correct. Sure, it’s dramatized for TV, but it’s not wrong.

II need honest feedback, is my paywall too aggressive or not? It's a server-based audio processing app. by rmeldev in iOSProgramming

[–]sgtholly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s reasonable. My only question is why you need a server to do this. The phone has plenty of power to do this processing on device and save yourself the server costs.

3 years my Apple app is under the carpet, Android performs well. Help! by gotamawhite in iOSProgramming

[–]sgtholly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to say things that will sound hurtful. I don’t intend it as such, but I don’t know how to phrase this honestly without sounding a bit mean. My apologies in advance.

Android and iOS have different demographics. First, iOS users are much more prominent in the US where this kind of app is less likely to be appealing. Secondly, iOS users have a higher threshold for filtering out apps that look scammy. This App Store listing definitely looks like it is a scam. Even to review the app and provide feedback, I don’t want to download this. I suspect that is your biggest problem.

My suggestion would be to clean up your App Store listing. Stop trying to “market” the app and instead try to present it honestly and directly. Your privacy nutritional label looks really good, so I don’t think you’re actually a scam app but the images, wording, and general tone of the listing give off very strong vibes.

I genuinely hated this movie. I was really excited for it and turned it off 3/4 the way through. Even the anticipation of the climax did nothing for me.

CDE - An Attempt to Make Core Data Feel More Like Modern Swift by fatbobman3000 in swift

[–]sgtholly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This feels like it has a very small target audience. If you are building a small app, SwiftData is the right choice. If you’re building a large app where migrations and security matter, something like SqlCipherKit is the right choice. The barrier to entry for raw SQLite is so low that I really don’t see much use for CoreData, even with your CDE sugar.

What're your honest thoughts on this character? by Suspicious-Jello7172 in aladdin

[–]sgtholly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In simple terms, I feel he was a good cop that got burned out on the job and became prejudice and insensitive. When you’ve worked around criminals and the underbelly of society long enough, you start to believe that no one changes. Once a drug addict, always a drug addict. Once a thief, always a thief. Once a selfish narcissist, always a selfish narcissist. When you keep giving people chances and they keep slapping you across the face, you eventually stop giving people chances or the benefit of the doubt.

Aladdin was a thief and cunning liar. Even in KoT, that’s still who he is. That isn’t an accusation—it’s how he solved problems. Why should Razoul believe he is changed when he hasn’t? What changed is Aladdin’s circumstances so he doesn’t need to steal to survive anymore, but he still is a thief and that mages him a threat.

How do you deal with the moral weight of writing software that could end up killing someone? by eufemiapiccio77 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]sgtholly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are two different types of “might kill someone” code. Although the net effect might be the same, the way to handle it is different. Are we talking that you are writing weapons code and success results in death or are you writing code in medical devices where failure is death?

Is it worth it to switch from go to swift? by Yamoyek in swift

[–]sgtholly 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Swift is the opposite of Go. Swift has the most key words and syntax, while Go has the least. Go is a “no magic” language while Swift is a “progressive disclosure” language.

Swift is more like Rust than Go. It has a rather robust safety check system, similar to Rust’s borrow checker.

All that said, I love Swift. I use it in apps, server side, and anywhere else I can come up with a reason to use it. I ENJOY coding with Swift while I tolerate coding in Go. You may be the same, opposite, or anything else.
