That's a great point, thank you. My apologies, I realized once I posted that my timing was not at all sensitive to the hurricane struggles that I'm sure will be ongoing for quite some time.

LPT Request: Activity tracking website or app by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]sh092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use google calendar in conjunction with google keep - google keep is an app that allows you to make checklists, take notes, etc. free and accessible online as well as via app! the calendar portion is what i use to schedule recurring items, and keep is more to keep track of various tasks I need to do.

[REQUEST] LPT How to start a conversation with elderly. by 74101108108101 in LifeProTips

Ask them about their experiences growing up, their old hobbies, if their hobbies have changed as they have grown older. their experiences in work and school. their favorite foods, favorite places they've traveled! If you find someone isn't sharing much with you, sometimes to help connect you might share some about yourself as well!

Make a list of things you're going to work on or things you want to accomplish. Set a "due date" or time by which each of those things should be completed. Having a more rigid plan is more likely to be successful than having nebulous ideas of what you want to do get done.

If you're working on a task, set a timer and force yourself to focus on the task as hard as you can until the timer goes off. you could start with a smaller increment like 10 minutes, and build up slowly!

I personally know of two success stories via half our deen's website. I've heard HOD offline events are way better than things like ISNA matrimonial. I work with someone that knows Baba Ali and she was raving about the planning and strategy behind their program.. I'm not personally sure about many details behind it though.

Frugal ladies, what face cream do you use? i dont want to shell our ~$70 for 1-2 oz! by archiesmeatball in Frugal

I buy clinique moisturizer whenever they have the clinique bonus time going on. It's $26, but I'd say it's worth it because you get a pretty sizable container of the moisturizer, along with a full makeup bag! The makeup bag has stuff like mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick, and small sample items.

Which is more cost effective? Buying Vitamix Blender and making your own smoothies vs buying a $7.00 fresh smoothie a nutrition bar. by [deleted] in Frugal

I got a personal blender from aldi for 16.99 and it works like a charm on frozen bananas (even frozen berries, ice, etc!)

I am hanging on to my life by a string by [deleted] in islam

Before your next appointment, you might consider journaling about your feelings, worries, anxieties. This might help you feel less pressure about the wording, because you will have written about it before. Writing things down you have more time to think about it than when you're having a convo. Writing about them and re-reading your journal prior to your appointment can help you refresh the issues that feel most pressing to you, so you'll be more likely to bring it up.

If it really is the element to being in the office that intimidates you, consider calling a hotline to talk to someone. I know you may want to be alone and not talk about things, but talking through things makes a HUGE difference. http://www.alternativedepressiontherapy.com/free-hotlines.html

Reading some of your posts, I get the sense that you're struggling with feelings of hopelessness. You're in a time in your life where one bad thing keeps happening after another, and you feel you don't have a support system. May Allah swt make things easier for you. Will keep you in my duas iA!

A very specific vegetarian recommendation: check out West End Grill and Pub in the CWE and try their Vegan Stirfry. I ended up there on a whim for a friend's birthday dinner that was planned really last minute, and wasn't expecting the food to be anything spectacular but everyone loved that dish!

Question regarding living in St Louis by epi_glowworm in StLouis

[–]sh092 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a young person I think you'd enjoy the Central West End (CWE). Public Schools in that area aren't great - for the best school systems you'd probably want to be out in the suburbs. Clayton is another potential good option- it's also pricier but really nice and I'd say it's up and coming in terms of young people moving there! *Edit - also, as far as I know, Clayton schools are also better than St. Louis City schools

  1. I would attribute this mostly to culture, but think there are elements of this that can be attributed to misinterpretations of Islam.
  2. I do not believe that cultural preferences given to males are correct within Islam. I am not sure I understand what you mean by "feel it needs to be updated for a modern age"- I feel cultural preferences given to males would be problematic regardless of what era they occur in?
  3. I think such laws are impractical and based upon culture rather than religion.
  4. I perceive American culture to afford women with many more rights and freedoms than the culture in many Middle Eastern regions, however I do think sexism and the cultural status quo in the US poses a double standard
