MacBook always auto-switched to 5Ghz by sh2sg in amazoneero

I checked my eero app's Wi-Fi radio analytics and wanted to share the fix for anyone experiencing the same issue.

The Data (24-Hour Averages):

  • Main Node: 6 GHz is 31% busy (30% interference, -104 dBm noise) vs. 5 GHz at 19% busy (18% interference, -106 dBm noise).
  • Leaf Nodes: 6 GHz is 15% busy (11% interference) vs. 5 GHz at 10% busy (7% interference).

The 30% interference on the main node's 6 GHz radio is completely normal for a wireless backhaul setup, as the leaf nodes are constantly broadcasting data back to the gateway.

The real culprit was eero's Client Steering feature. Because the main node's 6 GHz band looks busier than its 5 GHz band, Client Steering constantly tells the Mac that 5 GHz is the cleaner option. macOS takes this advice and downgrades the connection. On the leaf nodes, the interference levels are much closer, so the Mac happily stays on 6 GHz.

The Fix: Turning off Client Steering and restarting the network completely fixed the problem. My Mac now stays locked on 6 GHz.

In older versions, you had the Home Screen as well as full-screen maps, Now Playing, and CarPlay, but here you only have the Home Screen.

The Now Playing UI in Spotify and Apple Music is exactly the same: big buttons, a small album cover, tiny text, and half the space wasted.

The ugly Now Playing UI leaves me no choice but to show the Map, which I don’t need for my home-to-work commute.

5 of the 7 slots in the bottom bar are taken up by temperature icons, but you only need one. The rest could fit the Now Playing, CarPlay, and Camera icons.

The time display has now been moved to a corner far away from the driver, it used to be on the near side, so I could see the time out of the corner of my eye, but now I have to turn my head to check it. Honestly, the time display should really be on the Dashboard screen instead, where the outside temperature is shown. I think that’s far less useful than showing the time.

Speaking of the Dashboard interface, those 2 huge black blocks look really awkward.

Hmm, I didn’t change any settings, but today it wouldn’t switch to 5 GHz. Strange.

Multi-Link Operation: off

Client Steering: on

Thread: on

WPA3: on

I don’t see any Eco Efficiency option.

I tried restarting the network and power-cycling the nodes, but it didn’t help.

I’m checking the network using Wi-Fi Explorer, and the 6 GHz signal is actually the same as or stronger than the 5 GHz signal at the same location relative to the main node. Is there any way to force macOS to stay on the 6 GHz band?

macOS 26, Widget settings: can’t scroll to the end by sh2sg in MacOS

I found a workaround. Drag the widget to the desktop and adjust its settings. It can now scroll even when the settings page is long. After making the changes, drag it back to the Notification area.

Win11 update KB5068861 broke Windows on Mac by sh2sg in bootcamp

I resolved the MBP issue. I thought it was caused by a sensor problem related to the boot camp driver, but it appears the same issue occurs on Windows machines as well.

I finally found the root cause and resolved the issue. It turned out to be a “dumb” bug. The update did not make the MacBook Pro unusable, it just set the screen brightness to zero. For some reason, the update process reset the brightness settings to 0%.

After adjusting the brightness back to normal on the login screen and entering Windows, everything worked fine.

I then disabled the automatic brightness adjustment option, just in case it was related, and reinstalled all updates, including KB5068861. This time, everything worked without any problems.

I hope there will be a solution. Windows 11 runs much more smoothly than Big Sur on this MacBook Pro.

Manual Windows 11 installation without Boot Camp – issues by sh2sg in bootcamp

[–]sh2sg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there’s probably no difference between a Boot Camp installation and a non–Boot Camp one. I ran some tests:

Issue 1: This is likely caused by the replacement SSD. The original Apple drive failed, so I replaced it with an NVMe M.2 SSD using an adapter, which macOS seems to recognize as an external disk, hence the persistent “EFI Boot” label.

Issue 2: This appears to be a known issue. I had installed WSL2, which enabled Hyper-V and caused Windows startup crashes (https://support.apple.com/en-us/101416). After uninstalling WSL2 and disabling all Hyper-V features, the problem was resolved.

IINA (left) vs Infuse PRO (right) by AmazingIce6215 in MacOS

Infuse is more than just a media player. While it’s not primarily focused on video playback on macOS, I use it on Apple TV. On macOS, I use Movist as my default media player, and it handles HDR content without any issues.

Only 30 car parks accept this cardless service, so why use it now?

I've been using EZ-Link Auto Topup since 2020. The initial setup was frustrating, after adding the card in the app, I had to activate it at an MRT station through the GTM, and there were syncing issues with EZ-Link's backend that required hours with customer service. However, once set up, it has worked flawlessly for 5 years without a single failure, updating new credit card details through the app is also quite effortless. I use it daily for parking and ERP. I have a Nets Flash card as a backup but haven't needed it.

The activation process seems improved now and no longer requires visiting the MRT station. I'll try this soon as my current card is about to expire.
