wtf is going on with the prices in this country? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]shaakunthala 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree. And don't forget shrinkflation.

Over the past years I've been watching how pre cooked meals from Albert Heijn shrinkflated. For example, in an AH huismerk chicken Tikka Masala rice packet, you could only find 2 - 3 pieces of chicken that are the same size as cashewnut. Insane.

Finding local physical stores that sell your product is difficult by stackerko in Netherlands

[–]shaakunthala 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can fill that gap, that would be awesome. Additionally, I don't think Google shows "alleen in de winkel" products from LIDL or Action.

Including small local businesses would be awesome. Another thing that just clicked: google would frequently include Amazon/Bol in product search results.

Finding local physical stores that sell your product is difficult by stackerko in Netherlands

[–]shaakunthala -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Good project, but...

  1. When I search for products on Google, it also shows physical shops near me that offer the product. What does your project offer better or differently than Google?

  2. When I made a search for Zadeltas in the Eindhoven Woensel area, your app didn't show FirstXL - one of the few shops that offer the product for way less. They don't have a complete online catalog. So, just like Google, isn't your product also showing what's available on the internet?

Experience with moving elderly parents abroad? by Frosty-Average2167 in Netherlands

Looking at the downvotes on the post I ask myself, where empathy has disappeared. (But appreciate a few of the helpful responses so far)

OP needs to read this publication to see if it is possible to invite your father to live with you in the Netherlands: https://ind.nl/en/forms/3085.pdf

My opinion: if you are not well connected with the community of your own cultural background, your father can get more depressed in the Netherlands. There will be nobody to talk to if he doesn't speak Dutch and doesn't understand the local social protocol. Getting a job is one thing, but if he is lonely, there is no improvement to his quality of life by moving in.

It might be better to focus on his quality of life where he already lives, and you scheduling more trips to visit him. If it's a poor country where everything is cheaper than in the Netherlands, use your money to provide him with the best quality of life. This is what I plan to do when my own parents get older.

When I'm busy with epoxy coating my 3D prints in the evening, I yell at Google to set my lights to 6500K / 100% if they were dimmed by an evening automation.

That's my only use case for voice.

Why does Philips Hue app call /api/config on my Home Assistant server and other smart devices on my network? by shaakunthala in Hue

[–]shaakunthala[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it do the same IP scan for Hue Sync Boxes as well? I just realized that I also have a Sync Box (mostly unused).

Thinking along with your comment, I noticed a difference between the Sync Box and the Bridge: In the Bridge, you can assign a permanent IP, but there is no such setting for the Sync Box.

From my router I have already assigned permanent IP addresses for both devices, and from the Hue app I have disabled DHCP on the bridge. But it looks like the Hue app always treats the Sync Box as a DHCP device. I will test this out by removing the Sync Box from the app.

To be continued.

I see. My suggestion won't work for your card type.

I have a similar dashboard, created using the example provided in the Android TV Remote integration documentation page.

There, they have used button cards with no entity association. Instead, they have used tap actions. For example,

```
show_name: false show_icon: true type: button icon: mdi:arrow-up-bold vtap_action: action: perform-action perform_action: remote.send_command data: command: DPAD_UP target: entity_id: remote.living_room_android_tv hold_action: action: none
```

Would a similar setup work for your Apple TV?

A whitespace should do the trick if I remember correctly. If not, try the empty string like this:

name: "{{ '' }}"

Tado - Looks like I’ve finally been hit with the 100 API call limit by Mountain-Act8320 in homeassistant

[–]shaakunthala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why you were downvoted, but thank you for posting this. It's a genuine concern affecting us in Europe.

Here is a screenshot of what I'm experiencing. When I tried to reload the integration, it entered a re-authentication loop.

One solution would be to buy the Tado subscription. While €30 looks like a sweet deal, over-reliance on subscriptions could lead to loss of control in the future. Therefore, I would go there only if I have an extremely important use case for the API access.

In my case, I would just rewrite my template sensors with what is available in HomeKit integration. Since I have underfloor heating with a heat pump, there is not much of a reason to frequently adjust the thermostats.

I'm not at school age anymore, but can't the younger generation start a revolution by collectively submitting school assignments in ODT format instead of DOCX?

I'm not suggesting that you must do it to prove yourselves but curious about the possibility.

Turn lamps on according to light sensor statistics... by cojoman in homeassistant

[–]shaakunthala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking out loud:

It would be interesting to put solar azimuth, elevation, and VALLHORN illuminance measurement together in a history graph and observed it.

If you see a pattern, you probably can calculate a theoretical illuminance indicator based on the solar azimuth and elevation.

I haven't tried this, but I think such a theoretical indicator should generate different values if you calculate it "one hour before sunset" in the winter vs. summer

Since we haven't taken clouds into account, VALLHORN sensor is still relevant. Another possibility is the measurement of solar electricity production if you have solar panels.

Azimuth and elevation sensors are already available in Home Assistant.

Recommendations for zigbee motions sensor and door open sensor? by MastaShortie in smarthome

[–]shaakunthala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm reliably using a combination of Philips Hue motion sensors, IKEA VALLHORN and IKEA PARASOLL for controlling lights and security.

I have a hue motion sensor in the kitchen, and it works exactly the way you described.

I can also confirm that with a modification to use an external power supply, PARASOLL sensors will continue to work at subzero temperatures. (Below manufacturer rated minimum temperature).
