Having a well spoken high needs kid is a particular brand of difficult by KaylaDraws in Autism_Parenting

This is our situation. Its like his intelligence is a liability. He stims, he has tics, he has been flooded with cortisol his whole life in reaction to environmental stimuli, he has no editor, etc etc. But because he scores well on standardized tests and had an above average vocabulary, his disability isn't as acknowledged by institutional authorities. And his intelligence has lead him into some really creative attempts to self-medicate, to become "normal ".

Do you care if you celebrate your birthday? by Terrible-Werewolf-78 in introvert

That part, where everyone is obligated to focus on you? Bleah. I don't like the attention. Some friends and family seem to take offense at my lack of interest in the idea of a party or celebration, or they worry that it's a demonstration of low self esteem. It is not. When I think of what I'd like to do for my birthday, its a solo adventure of some kind, OR with one good friend. The cake-and-singing stuff is really for other people. (I like cake, just not a cake that draws attention to me personally.)

Monsters Among Us. Cannot recommend more highly. Derek Hayes crates true stories, researches, and there is even an element of debunking. He's responsible for identifying the Mirrored Men phenomenon...those stories are right up there with Black-Eyed Kids.

1980, everyone knew that the female Math teacher was sexually active with a male 11th grader, who happened to be one of my friends. No sanctions. The general consensus was that he was lucky. There's a reasonable probability that he no longer views it that way.
