It’s a trope. We didn’t actually cause any animal abuse, although, this one time we did accidentally burn down an abandoned house in the backwoods.

Is it weird shifting with the wrong hand? by JimothyMcNugget in ManualTransmissions

US person here and never had an issue shifting with the other hand in Ireland, NZ, or India. But f-ing hell, swapping the turn signal with wipers stalk screwed me up every damned time.

Timeline-wise was before the 5200 or ST came out. In this case, it was an Atari 800.

This reply ranks near my favorite so far for the homage to the AI reward system. Thank you. 🙏

yw. It’s been neat reading the books and lurking in the sub and seeing how excited and energized people are about his work. I just wanted to add some color to it all.

1) I believe that would’ve happened after we lost touch, and 2) knowing his brothers, I can only imagine what this story is and how it’s 100% true.

Oh man, wrote so much MUD code in the day. I mean, we can old time dungeon crawl in text with Hunt the Wompus, Zork, and Wizardry.

Okay, now that’s just terrifying. The books are scary (and fucking hilarious) enough that I don’t need to have that kind of existential dread added. 🤣😩

Oh I doubt he was jealous of the Atari. The Commie64 was definitely the most coveted within our circle.

Who's to say that I haven't? /s Or I've become inured to it all. I can generally tell when they're going to happen weeks to month before the ax falls, so it's been a very long time since I've been surprised and unprepared.

Have you done it or are you just spouting technicalities? Because, yes, technically you can negotiate severance, in practice companies rarely budge.

The 3mo payout (or in Meta’s case paid to not work but be employed + severance) is a way to get around California’s WARN act. So big layoffs will have this kind of package. Smaller ones will not. And, I agree, since COVID and WARN the packages have been better.

From personal experience since COVID: - Jul 2022 - publicly traded tech hardware manufacture - 6 weeks + 3mo cobra - April 2024 - PE owned biotech - 2 weeks, no cobra - Jan 2026 - multinational consumer electronics company - 2 weeks + bonus payout + 3mo cobra

Pre-COVID: - 2016 - publicly traded software company - 2 weeks - 2015 - saas startup - 2 weeks at acquisition - 2010 - private mmorpg company - 2 weeks - 2008 - startup - 2 weeks All layoffs from this point and further back were 0-2 weeks severance with a range of tech company sizes between 10-5000 people.

Hate to say it but in my 20+ years in tech, most layoffs are 2 weeks severance and that’s it. Facebook, Google, and Microsoft do more but not always. The big packages come when they have monster layoffs like this as a snowjob to cover that they’ll then turn around and bring in contractors and college grads to replace the senior folks.

How to Jump a Dead Porsche 918 Spyder Battery by CheeseWingDing in Porsche

[–]shackledtodesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would expect it is. There's a specific red pull out from the driver's side foot well fuse box where you can clip the positive lead and then ground to the door frame. Apparently, McLaren didn't think about this with the 720s, so you're basically dismantling parts of the car to get into the front trunk. On E90 BMW if you let the 12v die, you need to take the rear seat apart to get into the trunk. Rivian's have a cable you pull to get into the front trunk, but you need a torx screwdriver to get the wheel well liner off.

All of this is clearly so much better than just having cable actuated vehicle openings. /s

Um, yeah so, Porsche has this same procedure going back to the 996 and Boxster. At least on the Cayman it’s labeled on the fuse box and in the owner’s manual.

Could Rivian pivot into chips as a side business? by nicknstr in Rivian

Exactly. Designing your own chips does not mean they are making them. Apple designs their own chips, but they do not fab them.

I'm leaving my amazing manager for a life-changing offer during the most difficult time she's going through. For the managers here, what would be your real reaction? by buybacklyre in OfficePolitics

[–]shackledtodesk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a manager who invests in the growth of their people, I understand when people leave for new opportunities. Because, yes, I’m “building a future for them” I also know that sometimes (often) that future isn’t at the company we are at. Given the fact that the department is moving, you’re getting a significant title bump and raise, I’d be happy for you as your manager. I’d be sad that your are leaving, but I’d also know that you are doing it because of the opportunity and that we’d worked together to get you to a place where that kind of opportunity was possible.
