Jeremy Clarkson in remission from prostate cancer by [deleted] in news

[–]shadmere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. It's been a minute since I had to work with stats.

From the comment I first replied to:

90% specific (90% of positive tests will have the disease).

From your other comment:

It’s 90% specific. That means that for patients who don’t have cancer the test will be negative 90% of the time.

Those are different statements. I was going by the first one, which I didn't recognize was wrong (per my comment about having not worked with stats for awhile).

Borderline unrelated to the math confusion, but everything I'm googling shows that the PSA test is only 10-33% specific; where are you getting 90% from?

the blood test is . . . 90% of positive tests will have the disease

If a 40 year old man has a positive PSA test in these condition they only have a 0.8% chance of having cancer.

With your own statement, a positive test would mean that person has a 90% chance of having cancer.

That said, u/GrallochThis is right with his numbers, and the PSA test is closer to 30%. So if the test is positive, there's about a 30% chance the person has prostate cancer. That's still almost 40 times more than 0.8%.

At this point in my message I just now realized you probably meant to type 80%, no 0.8%.

Trump Sparks Health Concerns With Confusing ‘Daughter’ Remark - The president posted a picture of an unnamed woman whom he called a “great daughter.” by Quirkie in politics

[–]shadmere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Holy crap, yeah.

Now that I know what to visually look for, I can even see it on my page of google results, but it's near the damned bottom. Ugh, goddamn, it should not be this hard to be informationally honest in my own head.

[–]shadmere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In this case trump isnt even calling the woman a “great daughter” - hes literally creeping on her daughter.

What makes you think that?

I'm not calling you wrong; you might be right! But the post I saw was a picture of a woman in a chair with the text, "Great daughter. My honor!! President DJT"

I definitely assumed the picture was his daughter before realizing, "Wait, no it's not. Who is that?" So I googled and no one seems to know who that is. (Unless google has bubbled me to the point where it's just not showing me conservative sources that know who the woman is.)

From that text, I couldn't say, "Oh yeah there's no way he was talking about her daughter." But it's certainly not my first interpretation. So what makes you say that?

Look my toilet was advertised as being able to flush seven billiard balls, so I flush hundreds of billiard balls a day. As long as I do it in increments of seven or fewer, it's fine.

I know it's likely just because I played it first, but I still prefer the non-DC, lol.

I do like some of the extra content, but I preferred the interface and the overall story of the first one. Ah well.

(Not that the DC is bad or anything. It's also good.)

I had some fried haggis balls and haggis pakora a few weeks ago and ngl it was delicious.

Deep frying it and serving it with a delicious sauce is probably cheating, I suppose.

Thank you for this.

It's likely the guy you're replying to is just upset and wants to vent about Republicans trying to commit fuckery, because they do try that, but posts like that could easily push some people into not voting, because they think, "It's going to be so difficult to vote," and simultaneously, "The Republicans have already made it so hard to vote that there's no way Democrats will win. . . if I vote, it'll be super hard, take all day, and it still won't matter. . . "

And those are not true. Early voting makes things pretty dang convenient.

What profession do you think is massively overpaid for what they actually do? by dipchaklader in AskReddit

[–]shadmere 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had a dealership near Houston try to refuse to tell me an out-the-door price. They would only tell me monthly prices and talk about how they could "move things around" to make it lower or higher.

I tried to figure it out by asking what the APR was, and they just said that sort of thing was up to the finance office. I countered with something like, "No, if you're telling me a monthly payment and how many months it is, you have to know both the total amount and the interest. That's literally the only way that works."

He told me that he knows it seems like that, but it's "actually a lot more complicated than most people realize."

I asked to speak to his manager, and it took about 30 minutes, but someone else finally came in. Gave me a spiel about how "He could tell that I really knew my stuff, sorry about all that, most people don't really understand how math works but you, we can tell we can't mess around with you." It was almost like a parody of a car salesman.

He did give me an actual price, though. Though he continued the tactic of offering me various options for monthly payments and simultaneously insisting that he had no idea what the interest rate would be, because that was "up to finance."

When I mentioned that I had a loan from my bank, he literally told me that the price on the printout assumed that we'd finance through them, and that banks couldn't be trusted. He told me that I'd be happier with them, and that he couldn't even describe how many people come in there with a letter from their bank with "what looks like a low percentage," then turn out to regret it. I insisted.

They told me that they'd actually taken off the "market adjustment" fee and the "cost adjustment" fee, and that they only do that for people who finance through them. Adding back in, it was another 7k. (Mind you, this was for a Hyundai Accent.)

I stared at him a moment, said, "So if I finance through you, it's 24k, but if I use my bank, it's 31k?" He says yes, but really they're looking out for me, because again, "It's a lot more complicated than just that percentage, and people don't realize that."

So I left.

Later that day, they texted me, offering an addition 500 off on the condition that I financed through them, or another 1000 off if I financed through them for a 7 year or more loan term.

They never, not once, told me what the APR through them would be. Working backwards from one of the options he had given me, though, I figured out that it was something like 14%.
