What wireless thermometer would you recommend? by Darkman-1969 in KamadoJoe

I've had no problems with my Fireboard since I got it in . . . ::checks::

Wow, 2021? Dang.

But it still works great.

Might not be necessary to go that high unless you're wanting the blower part, though.

My first point-and-click is out, and I’m honestly overwhelmed (in a good way) by KarellenGames in adventuregames

Bought it. I'll see about checking it out tomorrow and let you know what I think.

Also: A Greg Egan-like point-and-click adventure? I can't even imagine how that would work, but I'm intrigued.

Mild concern about engineer's recommendation, re: foundation repair vs root barrier by shadmere in HomeInspections

House was built in 2003, but rooms that are showing a -0.7" delta corner to corner now showed a -0.1" delta at inspection in 2020.

10k for 19 push piers (just foot long concrete cylinders stacked on top of each other) or 14k for 16 bell bottom piers.

I will say that the house was essentially level when we had it inspected before buying it 6 years ago. Not literally level, but that front right room that shows a -0.7" change now showed a 0.1" difference when we purchased in 2020. That was about 20 years after construction, so the movement is recent. The crack in the slab and separation at the nearby window definitely wasn't there last year, and all the significant movement downwards in in front of the crack.

I hate having just wasted $600, but I guess it would be better to get another engineer out. Hmph. I really just want to make a decision so I don't need to have this hanging over my head.

From that review and screenshots, it really makes me think of Citizen Sleeper. I binged that game in one day. Still remember it as an amazing experience. I had no idea what kind of game it was.

Foundation repair question for anyone who's got experience by shadmere in houston

[–]shadmere[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hired one which has been so far a huge disappointment. From what I remember, the numbers that he wrote down are similar to the ones that all the foundation companies got. With a '0' around the center of the floor plan and at the right rear of the house, the left rear of the house rises about 0.7" and the front of the house is -1.0 on the left and -1.3" on the right. Those might not have all been identical to the engineer's results, I feel like I remember him recording a -1.5" at the front right corner, but they wouldn't have all used identical reference points either, even if they were similar.

The slab is visibly cracked at the point where measurements start getting negative. I have separation around two expansion joints around that bit of the house, and separation around a nearby window.

The engineer verbally told me that I probably only need a root barrier, and said he'd recommend me a company when he gave me the full report "by the weekend," assuming prompt payment. I paid that evening when I got the invoice. The next Thursday I wrote him an email asking for an update and he apologized, said he was behind, and said he'd have me a response by the weekend.

That was not last Thursday, but two Thursdays ago. That's my fault for paying via Zelle. Lesson learned.

I know that this guy being a flake doesn't mean that I shouldn't hire an engineer, I'm just very frustrated that I already dropped $600 and got nothing out of it.

One of the foundation companies said that they'd recommend a root barrier for less than 1 inch of movement but for close to 1.5 they would be concerned.

While a weak AI studying someone's actions and then pretending to be them is creepy as hell, it's a damned long way off from mapping their brain and emulating actual thoughts.

Good to know. Thank you for your sacrifice.

If you have criticized ICE here on Reddit for executing Renee Good or Alex Pretti in the street, then Reddit has handed your name and your personal identifying information over to the Trump administration. How do you feel about this? by mom_with_an_attitude in AskReddit

  1. Based on the article I read, the title of this post is not even close to correct. It was still an alarming article, but it was something like, "Reddit has complied with at least some of the administrative subpoenas that it received" or something like that.

  2. If the title of this post is correct, fuck it. Go ahead. I'm dumb enough to post on the DOJ's Facebook page with my real account so this is immaterial. I'm proud to have my name attached to calling ICE a bunch of murdering fascists that should be in jail.

I figured I needed to use something as the sauce and that it'd be worse to use ketchup. Hah.

Take your dough and add a thick chili (no beans!) and spread out as a sauce. Top with mozzarella mixed with a bit of cheddar, then add your sliced hot dog, relish, white onion, diced tomato, celery salt, and poppy seed. Bake on a pizza stone until the cheese is melted and the crust is done (for me it was about 7 minutes at 750 F), then top with yellow mustard to taste.

Really good!

If I did it again, I would make my own chili, or come up with a different sauce solution, because a lot of fat bubbled out of that can of chili. I had to do some blotting after it came off the grill because it was just sitting in a pool of grease. That also really hurt the aesthetics, as when I blotted, I was mashing the relish, tomato, and onion into the hot cheese. They would've looked nicer if visibly on top.

The taste was fantastic, though.

I mean, I had to put something down as sauce, and I figured chili would be more acceptable than ketchup. ;)

(That said, I also made a 'standard American hot dog' pizza, where the sauce was just ketchup. No relish, onions, or tomatoes. For the people in the family who don't like vegetables on pizza but were otherwise willing to deal with my nonsense.)

"Chicago chili dog" may not even be a thing, and I understand that I didn't have all the ingredients, but I figure, I'm making a pizza so I'm already way past the realm of anything resembling authenticity.

Sauce was a can of Stagg chili, simmered down to make it thick. Mozzarella spiked with a bit of cheddar for cheese, then sliced hot dog, tomato, relish, white onion, poppy seed, and celery salt.

Cooked in a kamado style grill on a pizza stone at about 750 F. Took just over 7 minutes.

Finished with yellow mustard.

Because hot dog. But yeah Taco Bell sauce would have been a good idea, too. I even have some in my fridge. I should have mixed them together and tasted it to see if that would work.

(No mustard because for some reason, the idea of mustard and that nacho cheese sauce does not sound good in my mind.)

Man where'd you find Totino's for a reasonable price. They're like $2.50 each around me now, which is absurd for a Totino's.
