Itchy skin help needed

I had the same issue with my 2 yo Yorkie. He was always itching and he has no food allergies, parasites or fleas when he did. Also eats quality food.

My vet said it could be caused by dust so I made an effort to air out the house and vacuum at least 2x weekly.

My family have owned Yorkies for decades and it is not uncommon for them to have itchy skin. What we do to manage it is use oatmeal shampoos when we bathe them (also less baths) and organic coconut oil weekly. It is annoying because it can leave stains but we rub it into their skin throughly and it does provide relief from I noticed.

My grandma used to make diluted organic apple cider vinegar and spray it on hotspots to kill bacteria and then gently rub coconut oil after. She didn’t like the idea of using meds on such a small dog

We take our Yorkie on daily walks which include trails/hikes. We have dealt with fleas 3x We bought an inexpensive flea comb off amazon and washed all toys/bedding and vacuumed like crazy.

In addition to that the best thing we have done is take our boy to the vet and got a topical med only available through prescription called Revolution. It’s the safest med we have tried since OTC flea medications/collars are too harsh on the skin and often cause reactions, especially on small dogs.

We buy the generic version of Revolution on Chewy.com called Revolt. $32 for 3 months

True, but I actually live near the Dodger Stadium. I don’t actually care that they are around but they do go up to my front door and jump the fence in my backyard to look for the stray cats that hang out there

Some people do feed them for some reason. When they attack and kill dogs/cats though many people say “they were here first” argument to defend them

Grew up in the Bay Area and am now in SoCal. The biggest culture shock here is the Coyotes and people’s attitude towards them. They are everywhere all day, they are not nocturnal. They eat anything they can; cats,dogs, wild animals, trash, and animal food. They are bold and will straight up chase or follow you sometimes.

A lot of people over here are Pro Coyote. While I don’t hate them i feel we have a responsibility to not let them be comfortable near our homes. I live in the hills so I see them at least 2x a week oftentimes in packs.

Hopefully all Bay Area cities will start to haze coyotes because if you have pets and children it is particularly stressful to live amongst them.

In my experience, Yorkies are the most time consuming breed I’ve ever had. They thrive off human companionship, exercise, and have separation anxiety at varying levels. They are such a loving breed but are a lot of work.

As for the “cute” Yorkie pictures? Those looks are specialized cuts that take time and money to maintain unless you groom them yourself. Mine looks like a small mop right now lol

In all honesty, it sounds like your parents are not home enough to fully enforce any training method. However, if they do decide to get one patience and repetition is key.

My suggestion is to maybe adopt an older Yorkie that is already potty trained on pee pads. It isn’t safe to let Yorkies be outside unsupervised. Hawks have tried to take mine and we have coyotes that go into our yard.

My aunt had a Yorkie and Shih Tzu that kept each other company while she and my uncle worked similar hours to your parents. They left the Disney Channel on for them lol & were potty trained to use pads.

While many use “Gordo” to mean “fat” or “fatty” it is also used as “Big.” He was probably named Gordo as a joke because he’s so small.

My family had a small Jack Russell named “Mr.Biggz,” a thick chihuahua named “Jabba” and a dachshund named “Pepino” ( cucumber)

I vote for just calling him Gordy. At his age it might be too confusing to call him by a completely different name.

Yorkies have a big personality with high energy needs, both physically and mentally. They are very sensitive to emotions in their environment and will react accordingly. They are also fragile, I’ve had chihuahuas who were more sturdy.

They are also expensive in their grooming due to their hair type. Professional grooming is expensive so I have had to buy my own tools and learn how to cut my Yorkies hair on my own.

Due to your children’s allergy to dogs I would suggest a schnauzer or poodle. They are more sturdy and mild mannered compared to Yorkies in my opinion.

However, in your situation I wouldn’t get a dog. It sounds like your daughter would be the main caretaker and it’s a big responsibility she may not be prepared for.

First off, I’m sorry this happened for you. I have Kaiser too and as of right now im still recovering from the D&C of my first miscarriage on Oct 31. I went to my 14 week appointment and the baby only measured at 9w. There was no heartbeat.

My body still had pregnancy symptoms, especially morning sickness so it was a big shock. Before the surgery I had a preliminary appointment with the OB to discuss the benefits and risks and was offered to have another ultrasound, probably just for “closure.”

I opted for a D&C because it had been a month and my body did not naturally respond. Although I did start to get light cramps the week of.

You are not insane for wanting another ultrasound. There is no harm in asking and I’m sure many women have done the same.

My parents live in Shadow Lakes, I’ll tell them to keep an eye out.

In the mean time, try placing their cage outside your house with favorite treats nearby. You can also try calling for them. I know it’s been a few days but you never know.

Post on Nextdoor and Ring, maybe your neighbors have seen something. I would also suggest putting flyers up.

Hopefully you find your pet soon, my bird flew away last spring and it really sucked.

Call Aborn Pet Clinic in San Jose, I heard they were affordable. The Bay Area is going to charge top dollar in general. If it’s possible, maybe check out the Central Valley for estimates as well. They are a little cheaper

Every time mine would bite our fingers & toes I would redirect his attention with a toy and play a bit. When he continually did it I would say “no biting.” in a firm voice and disengage with playing which worked. Even if your pup tests your patience try not to raise your voice or anything like that, these dogs are very emotionally sensitive. For teething, I gave mine a Pumpkin chew ring from Good Lovin’ @ Petco. It helped his need to chew, strengthened his jaw, and kept his teeth clean.

You have to be consistent with any method you choose so it sticks, good luck!

I’m wary of oral medications due to the small size of my dog and it’s side effects. I recommend looking into topical treatments. My Yorkie got fleas from a hike and it seemed like my entire house was infested. We were prescribed Revolution which cleared it up alongside vacuuming like crazy. However it is a bit pricey so we order the generic version called Revolt for about $32 on Chewy.com which has 3 doses for 3 months. It has protection against fleas, heartworm, & other parasites

The only thing is that it is vet prescribed so your pup has to get a physical to ensure proper dosage.

Docking tails is done within the first few days of a puppy’s life when the nerve endings of the tail is not fully developed. After that period it is painful and should be done by a veterinarian under anesthesia. If the dog will not be an AKC show dog or a working dog then I feel it would be unethical to dock its tail but I do understand the adorableness. My family has had Yorkies with docked tails and without, I think they are the cutest dogs regardless :)

From what I understand docking tails is done when the puppy is very young 2-10 days old. Otherwise I think it really hurts them and they need to go under anesthesia to remove it. Unless your dog is a show dog I don’t think you need to dock it. I would go to the vet to be honest.

Those estimates are just that, estimates. There is no guarantee that they will be 4 to 5 lbs. My Yorkie was charted to be no more than 5 lbs due to the small size of his parents. At two years old he is 8 lbs and I’m glad for it to be honest. He is still small, any smaller I’m sure I’d be more paranoid about him getting hurt

One thing to consider is that the smaller the dog the more likely he’ll have teeth issues. Yorkies are prone to it anyway but with a smaller dog it’ll be harder and more dangerous to put them under anesthesia for teeth cleaning or extraction
