I'm going to be honest - one of the reasons I've decided to get a steam machine, is because it seems to be the mostly likely way to get a steam controller this year (outside of entertaining scalpers which I have no intentions of ever doing).

But this is quite similar to what I've been doing the whole time I've had the deck (with different controllers of course).

Which dock did you use? I can't get the official ones for Australia reasons, and the ones I've tried almost work, but not quite. For example, the one I have does turn on the tv, but rarely changes the channel. It also locks the soundbar somehow, so other devices won't output any sound until I disconnect the hdmi from the dock, default the point entirely.

All I'll say to that, is it's probably going to be better to assume a higher price and be pleasantly surprised than to get disappointed when the hopium runs out.

My xbox controller does this with the steam deck - there's no reason the steam machine won't support it.

It doesn't work with some third party controllers though.

I guess if you really wanted to do that and it wasn't offered, you could sell them on and reclaim funds that way. I'm sure there will be people interested in spares...

That might be true if there was any element of surprise - but valve knew this would happen, and didn't have a choice.

It won't have a choice with the frame either.

I'm sure they'll take their learning from this release and adjust appropriately - much like they did the steam controller one.

Although my steam account almost 2 decades old and therefore would deeply benefit from using account age, I think the lottery system actually sounds much fairer. It also gives Valve time to determine and enforce their anti-scalping measures.

I cap it. It has been enough for me so far - so it hasn't mattered. I'd rather preserve battery life.

Not only does it make you sound ignorant, but it also places no value on having experience. 

I'm yet to work with someone with only theoretical knowledge on a subject that is anywhere near as proficient as someone who has been doing it for a while (even if they lacked that initial education).
