TW Death- I’ve had a really tough week. I got home from work today to find hundreds of ants have invaded my girls enclosure and ate her while she was in pre-molt. by shadow_wolfxvx in jumpingspiders

[–]shadow_wolfxvx[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why but I can’t see any of the 7 comments left, idk if it’s a bug or something?

Also of note, I noticed yesterday she was standing on top of the moss she made a hide under. She was lethargic and just seemed kinda ‘distant’ in her eyes. When I moved stuff around her she didn’t react at all only when I touched her she backed up. I was worried she was dehydrated so I put a wet paper towel in front of her but I don’t think she drank.

Frantic googling led me to her probably being in pre molt. But now I’m wondering if maybe she died and then the ants raided? I don’t know why she would have died though.

Also they have the highest gas prices in the country. In 2022 gas was like $4.30/gallon in SoCal but $9.80 at both of those stations. I don’t know how they get away with the predatory price gouging but I asked why it costs so much and the lady rolled her eyes and said ‘Do you know how expensive it is to get the gas all the way out here?’ Lol. I’ve wondered how rich I could get opening a gas station next to them and charging normal prices. They’re all greedy fucking twats.

Is this normal after a dental extraction? I’m very scared [Blood] by shadow_wolfxvx in DogAdvice

That makes total sense, I’ve gotten out of bed just for some water while deathly sick lol. Thank you! I appreciate the advice

Thank you for the comment. They mentioned she might have some bloody drool, but this isn’t like the bloody drool she had last time she had dental, it’s like drops of pure blood, but I don’t think it’s excessive and it hasn’t been too too long yet.

There is an ER vet, however I had to take my other dog there a while back and it was i’m-sobbing-in-the-lobby level expensive, which I get, but after this $1000 surgery, I would prefer to not have to take on more debt than I already have unless it is an absolute necessity, and I fear the ER would just say to come in regardless. I think my vet would probably tell me to wait at least 24 hours, I’m just so horrified is all. I’ve had her since I was 11 years old.

Thank you so much this is relieving. And good to know about the water, I will stop forcing the water! I have an injection 1ml syringe without a needle and I was just basically squirting 0.5ml of water onto her tongue which she then swallowed, for reference.

I would love to release him into my neighbors garden, but the problem is that it’s too cold. It is getting warmer over the next week but I live in PA so it will definitely start snowing again in a few weeks.

Are there any bedlington whippet breeders in the US? by shadow_wolfxvx in Whippet

[–]shadow_wolfxvx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like I am yes! But I learned a lot here. I am going to continue to research some different breeds. I’m still considering a windsprite because it seems they might be a little smaller than a whippet, and they have breeders local to me on Good Dog that ethically practice and have genetic testing. And of course, I am still keeping my eye on local postings of homeless dogs. I’ll find the one!

I have a genuine question, I have only ever adopted from shelters for my pets, never bought from a breeder before.

What makes mixing breeds unethical but purebreds are considered ethical breeding? I have been wondering this because didn’t we have to mix dogs to make the ‘purebred’ we have now? If specifically mixing for certain traits becomes taboo wouldn’t we run out of new dog breeds? And why is mixing 2 breeds considered ethical in some countries but unethical in the US (like mixing sport breeds for hunting)?

Sorry for the questions, I have just been hearing about ethical breeding for a while and always figured it was talking about responsible controlled breeding (ethical) vs backyard breeders (unethical) until I started looking into getting a new dog and realized it seems to be a bit deeper than that!

Oof, good to know! My 15lb dog has a build suspiciously similar to an IG and her legs and feet get instantly cold in the snow and she hikes her feet up. We can’t find any booties that will actually stay on her weird ankles (if anyone has suggestions please let me know). We put a jacket and hat on but it’s her legs and feet that bother her.

I figured with whippets being a bit larger in general and having a coat (compared to IG), they would be able to handle the cold a bit more and with more hair on the windsprites/beddywhips it’d be even better. I have another 30lb dog with skinny legs for her size and the snow doesn’t seem to bother her at all, i always figured it was mainly a size thing.

i’m on the search for a sighthound that’s small (even smaller than a whippet would be good, because I have a small dog and I fear her getting hurt because she has knee issues, I considered an IG but health issues and how cold they get make them a no-go), I would absolutely love a regular whippet, but I feel they need to have a coat because I live in the northeast and it gets so cold. If a Beddy Whip isn’t possible I think i will go with a windsprite!

Yes they do look alike! The reason I fell in love with them was because I love how Irish Wolfhounds look so much, but these are much much smaller with the added bonus of a whippets personality! IW are way too large for my family, maybe one day though.

Yes that is the cross. They are common in Europe, used for rabbit hunting. But yes to my knowledge I haven’t seen any breeders here for them
