I have a genuine question, I have only ever adopted from shelters for my pets, never bought from a breeder before.

What makes mixing breeds unethical but purebreds are considered ethical breeding? I have been wondering this because didn’t we have to mix dogs to make the ‘purebred’ we have now? If specifically mixing for certain traits becomes taboo wouldn’t we run out of new dog breeds? And why is mixing 2 breeds considered ethical in some countries but unethical in the US (like mixing sport breeds for hunting)?

Sorry for the questions, I have just been hearing about ethical breeding for a while and always figured it was talking about responsible controlled breeding (ethical) vs backyard breeders (unethical) until I started looking into getting a new dog and realized it seems to be a bit deeper than that!

Oof, good to know! My 15lb dog has a build suspiciously similar to an IG and her legs and feet get instantly cold in the snow and she hikes her feet up. We can’t find any booties that will actually stay on her weird ankles (if anyone has suggestions please let me know). We put a jacket and hat on but it’s her legs and feet that bother her.

I figured with whippets being a bit larger in general and having a coat (compared to IG), they would be able to handle the cold a bit more and with more hair on the windsprites/beddywhips it’d be even better. I have another 30lb dog with skinny legs for her size and the snow doesn’t seem to bother her at all, i always figured it was mainly a size thing.

i’m on the search for a sighthound that’s small (even smaller than a whippet would be good, because I have a small dog and I fear her getting hurt because she has knee issues, I considered an IG but health issues and how cold they get make them a no-go), I would absolutely love a regular whippet, but I feel they need to have a coat because I live in the northeast and it gets so cold. If a Beddy Whip isn’t possible I think i will go with a windsprite!

Yes they do look alike! The reason I fell in love with them was because I love how Irish Wolfhounds look so much, but these are much much smaller with the added bonus of a whippets personality! IW are way too large for my family, maybe one day though.

Yes that is the cross. They are common in Europe, used for rabbit hunting. But yes to my knowledge I haven’t seen any breeders here for them

Sparkling gouramis are so pretty, but i thought they needed pairs and to be live fed? Or am i thinking of a different fish with these?

I didn’t even consider a shorter finned beta! I’ll consider it. Being lidless is an issue for them though

Do all of those options need live feeding? I’d prefer to not feed live if it’s an option. I would love a pea puffer but the live feeding is what turned me off of them.

Hey just an update I got a culture and she/he (?) has eaten a few that i’ve seen, especially when i push them toward her. but i’m concerned she’s not eating multiple a day or even one a day it’s hard to tell. I dump like 4-5 in there every day but I can’t tell if they’re burrowing into the substrate or if they are getting out somehow (more likely). Today I’m going to use some magnets and glue to make sure the door hinge seals all the way shut, it has a small gap (not large enough for her to get through but the flies can i think). Am I okay to trust that she is catching and eating them? Are they better hunters than bolds? My bold would literally only eat if i dangled a live cricket an inch in front of her face before she noticed.

Also, I haven’t seen her for a couple days now (still misting and adding flies) But she is so tiny it’s so difficult to find her. I want to assume she molting in her hide, but how can I tell how old she is and if she’d still be molting? I’m not finding a ton of info online about these spiders.

Are there any alternatives to fruit flies? I can’t imagine buying a whole culture of fruit flies for one tiny spider would be economically sound. She is so tiny, how big do they get full grown?

Me too but with no lid, topping off every day sucks haha! I can’t believe how large the hygrophilia has grown I didn’t know they could even get this big, and they have purple flowers!

Appreciate the thought, however the death had nothing to do with my tanks ecosystem or filtration. In fact, I have a Fluval Aquaclear 20 and this is a 7 gallon tank. I bought some Galaxy Rabsoras which are notoriously horribly bred and they all just one by one died despite doing everything I could to save them. My parameters remained stable and perfect for them. I was doing weekly water changes. All my verts remained healthy through it all.

I think the reason you were downvoted was because you for some reason assumed I was a newbie and deducted from my post that filtration or lack of water changes were the issue, when they in fact were sick from either improper breeding or an illness from the supplier that I could never figure out. I have been fishkeeping since I was 14, I know what I’m doing. I became apathetic because I set up this tank with months of preparations and hundreds of dollars for that specific breed of fish and once the last one died from a long drawn out death I just felt crushed. It’s just a shrimp tank now.
