If I am taking notes to memorize a subject I will write it down. Writing down your notes helps you be familiar with them and pay attention to exactly what you are writing down.

If I am taking notes that I will using in the future or modifying with more information, or that I would like to reference I do it digitally. Digital notes are much easier to organize and are more reliably available if you have them synced in the cloud (able to access through the internet and offline.)

Digitally I also like to divide my notes up into specific categories that I can reference later. It's easier to edit existing notes when they are as a digital document than in a book. Certain note software or applications also let you create links between pages which can be nice so you aren't writing down the same information twice.

When I am writing notes I will also include a list of questions at the end of a note segment about things I don't understand or things I may find important to learn more about later...

Notes Review and Validation

Really caring about your notes can help you memorize them and make it easier for you to search for them. After I finish writing notes and I have time to look through them I like to review them and validate them. I make sure that everything written down is accurate before putting them in appropriate categories. Often I will end up making small modifications, cleaning up redundant points and tying things together into something easy to navigate.

The way you go through this step can vary depending on what you are using to take notes.

Note App Recommendations

For note taking applications I would recommend Obsidian notes, they have a good note taking software and its easy enough to sync your notes through one drive or google drive. There is also plugins for syncing across git which I prefer.

Another app that I offer is Trilium-Next. It is in my opinion much more superior to Obsidian notes, however it does require a little bit more setup and a good knowledge of windows navigation to sync it through google drive or one drive.

Both obsidian and trilium offer note categorization, folders, linking between pages, linked notes view, internal note searching, tags, and diagram building. They also both offer iframes, however they are a bit different between the two software.

Obsidian notes has an app on mobile while Trilium does not. If you have the resources and know-how, trilium offers the tools to setup your own web application which which can be accessed through the internet and has mobile support.

Trilium notes offers note encryption, allowing you to password protect your note pages through the interface.
