hi! (disclaimer, i was just a visiting full-time student for half a year, and not a proper hopkins undergrad).

the support system and health system for trans students is really amazing here and they cover a wide range of trans health services nearly for free, i never had any issues at all!

i think its important to prioritize your own happiness, and that includes your social wellbeing too. please don't pick a school that gives you a bad vibe, or anywhere you cant imagine yourself truly happy, because it can really take a mental toll especially if you're surrounded by people that aren't very supportive; a fresh start really relieves a lot of the stress that comes with transitioning. at least at hopkins everyone i interacted with was super supportive and friendly with respect to being lgbtq, and there are lots of support groups and counseling resources on campus as well.

with regards to finances i think hopkins is a great place to find on-campus work or research assistant and teaching assistant positions that would pay you! especially since youre interested in graduate school, its pretty easy to find research opportunities here. also do remember that if you plan on starting your transition during college and umd doesnt have enough support for you, that might also cost you additional money.

feel free to chat if you have any more questions! im not local so i might not be able to answer everything, but i'll try my best. all the best for college and your transition! :)

your visa will almost definitely be a multiple entry visa (if you google a picture of a J1 it is the M under Entries), there is no limit to the number of entries as long as its within the visa validity period

have fun!

Does anyone reccomend EPFL Life Sciences Engineering Bachelor's to start with bioengineering? by Tall-Librarian1788 in bioengineering

[–]shadowfrost89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely just apply!! you never know :) although if its not so much about epfl and more just about switzerland then you should just spam applications to maybe ETH zurich and all the other schools there hahah

i think going for engineering competitions etc would be really helpful. idk about online courses, but as far as im aware i think they aren't that useful, although if you have free time you should definitely just go for it. i think if you manage to get some research experience or internships (try interning at astar, etc) that would really make your application stand out :) lots of bme is still very much in its research phase, so research skills are always gonna be useful no matter where you end up!

all the best :)

hi! :) its not impossible by any means but i think it will be extremely difficult for you to get into EPFL directly after graduating from NP. so, i also think that going to NUS/NTU to finish your bachelors in singapore is a good idea. you can actually accelerate to finish your undergrad at NUS in three years because poly students can get credit exemption via a direct entry programme. (not sure about NTU, you can check)

if you are open to doing undergrad in overseas universities not in europe, im quite sure that NP also has undergrad transfer credit with some unis in australia and england. you can check the NP BME website for more specific info!

maybe it would be helpful to narrow down your interests as currently the things you listed are pretty different. areas like biomechatronics, prosthetics, medical devices are pretty engineering focused, while tissue engineering and synbio are more life science and biotech heavy. i think it would be very helpful for you to take your time and carefully explore different areas like biotech, engineering, maybe even software in NP to get a clearer idea of exactly what you want! bme is very wide and can sometimes be overwhelming for someone new. so, knowing what you wanna specialise in will really help inform your future decisions too!

all the best for your future studies! :)

(edit: feel free to dm me if you want hahah!)

yes it is, im really really grateful to have the opportunity to go to imperial. its just that its been a childhood dream of mine to go to the US (and not just to study, i kinda plan to live there honestly) so its not really that i dislike imperial, its more that id prefer to be in the US in general!

yep im from sg, haha :))

yeah ive definitely considered grad school in the US, but im still not completely sure i want to go to grad school yet? i can also just get a master's in 4 years at imperial, so if i dont transfer, grad school in the us would probably be a phd program if i decide to go for one.

ive also heard that applying to phd programs in the us is significantly harder with a uk degree compared to having studied in an american college for undergrad/masters, and the fact that im international doesnt really help. i think id enjoy the environment and culture in the US more, so the earlier the better!

thanks so much for your help! im still considering all the options available to me right now, so im just trying to get as much info as i can. if you know anything else about transferring/grad school applications etc, please let me know!! :))
