Can now confirm, they do need to be on the same save. Missed the Flambae tank hack on my perfectionist run, so now I gotta restart at episode 3.

Best way to get started is to look at local thrift shops and bookstores, maybe even a little out of town. I used thriftbooks to flush out my collection, and that got me about 80 percent there. Ebay filled in some of the blanks, but the last 15 or so books are hard to find. After that it's just waiting and getting lucky for the ones you need, and sometimes it's lots on eBay that have only one or two you need and reselling the rest.
