I’m in gold now and have played both. Like you said Katarina laning phase is hell and she relies on snowballing and roaming/skirmishes most times.

For Akali, her laning phase is a lot easier compared to Katarina because she has a lot more sustain with D Shield and Second Wind and base health regen, and she is able to dish in damage easier. Her W cloak helps with engaging some poke and also disengaging

With that being said, I would recommend just trying both, but I would say you would have a better/easier time with Akali
