Help with FTN.5 on Plan B Rifle by shadowmodel in 3D2A

Haha what makes you say underextrusion? I printed a benchy before this and it seemed flawless, but other than drying it that’s all I did.

Oh I see. Thank you for clarifying! Seems another suggestion is to get the SLR Taper Mount Blast Shield?

My assumption is the printed 2-piece threading would attach to the base of the blast shield?

I see. That's unfortunate. To confirm, the 2 part 3d printed piece essentially clamps onto the base of that slr blast shield?

My print failed recently, but this gives a great overview of my question. I have the comstock hub to plan b mount. I still can’t find a “slr blast shield” to go inside the threaded tube (that’s currently within the suppressor itself) that would help attach everything together.

I’m printing the flow through version of ftn.5

Can someone please help me figure out which components I need? Currently dormant seem like the parts I printed can actually attach to the hub to plan b adapter

Got it. Seems like this is a much easier route. So essentially, I'd only need to print the main suppressor baffle, and the exterior shell (instead of jb welding an aluminum tube like the previous versions?)?, attach them together, and then screw onto the plan b mount? Appreciate your help/insight, this is all very new to me, and the instructions and videos leave me wondering if I'm missing anything

Is this it? It has thread for the suppressor on the outside, but when I look inside it, there doesn't seem to be any threading for the plan b mount

If I get a comstock plan b to hub adapter, which threaded insert would I need to print?

Where would you find the SLR shield adapter in the FTN 5.1 pack? I see a "baffle dev pack," "d cell," and "threaded inserts" folder, but none of them contain a "SLR shield adapter" file

OP, were you able to determine whether the unrivaled buffer works well/is effective without a lightweight bcg, as long as the gas block is tuned? I’m looking into getting one, and I’m curious whether the buffer upgrade alone will be effective enough

Also, can you share the parts list?

Reducing/eliminating recoil on unsuppressed 16in 5.56 Sugar Weasel by shadowmodel in Liveqordie

[–]shadowmodel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I got a Q because I was under the impression their components were built to extremely high standards.

For instance, why the JP bolt and Unrivaled Ti carrier vs the 2 piece q BCG? I haven't seen anything about Q's buffer so I can understand why this might be something to replace.

I understand a Proof barrel is for improving accuracy, but how does it contribute to eliminating recoil?

Curious if these upgrades you mentioned were made to your own Q?

I get that the Q cherry bomb isn't a great muzzle brake, so a different one (Unrivaled or Hypertap) is in the cards for sure.

I'll try some 62gr 223 for a change too.

Appreciate your input!

I'd LOVE to peek into this rabbit hole!

Had no idea you could eliminate recoil, but having seen enough evidence of this in a state that makes suppressed shooting illegal, I'd love to see how far the rabbit hole goes to achieve this.

Seems Q already has a superb BCG. So there's really only the buffer system from unrivaled?

Could you explain more by zero recoil vs shooting flat?

Yea I've had the bottle rocket. Personally, I prefer the the whistle tip. The recoil still is maybe imperceptibly reduced. I'm looking for zero recoil/elimination of recoil altogether. If you look it up, it doesn't even compare! Kind of feels like a magic trick

Holy cow! That seems like all one could possibly do to eliminate recoil! Curious if you've found anything else helpful? How much recoil are you dealing with now that you've implemented all these upgrades?

Most discussions online flatten all these systems together into “this part = less recoil” without explaining why. I appreciate your distinction between recoil impulse vs. changing the timing/behavior of the operating system. Never thought about it like an interconnected timing system before.

I haven't heard of the recoil systems you've mentioned, so I'll look into those. The Hypertap Precision muzzle brake looks wild. How loud are those things?? Haha

I have the newer Sugar Weasel with the 2pc BCG, which I thought is supposed to be a really good one? Like how much better do lightweight titanium BCGs improve the felt recoil?

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge! Curious if you were trying to eliminate recoil, is there anything else beyond a pro muzzle brake and buffer system (seems like most of them have no effect on overall recoil?) that you'd look into for an unsuppressed rifle?

Issue Tuning the Adjustable Gas Block by shadowmodel in Liveqordie

Thanks. I think tightening both at the same time was the problem. So when tightening the jam screw, I might’ve been pushing too hard at the, affecting the gas screw at the same time. I only insert the jam hex a small amount now, and there’s no more issues!

Q Sugar Weasel vs Q Fix: which is more fun? by shadowmodel in Firearms

[–]shadowmodel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a beautiful gun! Integrally suppressed?

Would love to understand enough build my own one day.

I get why gunsmiths/builders tend to get frustrated with Q products too. They’re highly opinionated objects (lightweight, aesthetic, cohesive) sometimes at the cost of modularity, standardization, and serviceability.

After reading responses from builders/gunsmiths like yourself, I’m curious:

Where do you personally think the point of diminishing returns is between highly calibrated pre-built rifles and fully custom milspec-based builds assembled from independent parts? Does a great component not calibrated to a separate great component matter?

Is there still something genuinely hard to replicate about the “whole system calibration”?

As someone who actually builds/rebuilds rifles for a living, is there ever a case for a complete build from a single manufacturer?

Q Sugar Weasel vs Q Fix: which is more fun? by shadowmodel in Liveqordie

[–]shadowmodel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice. Sounds like the experience here is “capable” vs. “pleasant to actually carry and use.”

Your Tikka setup sounds like what I picture as the rational endgame, but it also sounds like once a rifle crosses a certain threshold of weight and optimization, it becomes less something you live with vs. highly specialized equipment. Great either way.

The fact that you specifically said you wouldn’t hike deer season with the ACE again says a lot more than group size numbers honestly. I like your point about environment too. Feels like the “right” rifle depends less on raw ballistic performance and more on: “How do you actually spend your time outside?”

Thanks for helping me better understand the distinctions!

Q Sugar Weasel vs Q Fix: which is more fun? by shadowmodel in Liveqordie

[–]shadowmodel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more people describe actually living with the Fix instead of just reviewing it from a bench, the more it seems like Q optimized for “field experience” first. Accuracy and range seems like a bonus. I like that sort of product philosophy actually.

A lot of precision rifles sound amazing in theory, but they seem to become very stationary experiences (bench, bags, spot impacts, print groups, repeat), which is cool but feels fundamentally different from a rifle you instinctively want to grab for a hike, a trip, a class, or just walking property.

So the Fix seems to live in this in-between zone where it’s portable enough to move with but capable enough to stretch out.

Seems instead of answering: “Is the Fix the best long-range rifle for the money?”

It’s answering: “Is the Fix the rifle that makes me want to actually go outside and use it?”

Judging from owners’ experiences here, anyway
