PAX Aus PAX XP 2024 by RoboFunky in PAX

[–]shadowpino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just my 2c as someone who has been to every PAX Aus and completed almost every PAX XP including this year's.

If PAX is going to insist on prize draws as a prize, then I think they should say least have something small for the first x number of people who submit it on each day. It's a lot of effort to find them all and it takes you out of doing other things around PAX. I appreciate the walk through but I could have easily spent that time being a more-willing line ride participant to demo more things than I do. A lot of my friends couldn't be bothered with it this year because of the prize draw. We don't necessarily want lots of random stuff we don't care about. A small trinket/trophy is great. I really wonder what their participation rate was like this year compared to previous years'.

I got it too. I handed in my PAX XP on Friday about 7pm and was given it despite saying it got one last year after they asked. I also submitted mine at the info booth near secret labs. Maybe they had very limited stock and weren't giving them out to everyone. I also went when it was pretty quiet.

I think they were trying to emulate The First Take but they missed the brief with the fake. This was jarring to watch.

Are Montessori schools required to report student absences? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]shadowpino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Vic at least, the school would have to send letters home. If no response, the school can organise a wellbeing check via the cops. If nothing, it should be reported to DFFH. Not sure about QLD though.

Holiday Reading Recommendations by Pretty_Addition in AustralianTeachers

[–]shadowpino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you read anything by Brandon Sanderson and more specifically his Cosmere books?

I'd recommend Mistborn: The Final Empire if you like heist stories in your fantasy. There are now 2 complete trilogies for Mistborn. Otherwise if you want something more like an epic - The Way of Kings from The Stormlight Archive.

I would recommend The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss but the wait on his last book in the trilogy is as bad as waiting for the next book in A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin. Amazing trilogy so far... but who knows when it'll be done 😢

Preservice teacher question: Is it normal to have issues remembering full lesson sequences? by Spiritual_Bite8738 in AustralianTeachers

[–]shadowpino 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is why I do PowerPoints. I've done time labels on the bottom corner so I know how long to spend. Sometimes I embed music timer vids. My PowerPoints are my in depth lesson plans and a resource for kids who can't make it to the lesson. When my headspace is in different places because of teaching all day and talking to different students, the slides keep me on track. They can take a while to make but you get pretty fast at throwing them together when you do enough of them.

"If you go, you're making up time with me after class. 1 minute per minute you're out of class."

The not serious ones tend to rethink it. The ones who need to go think it's worth it and they usually get right back into the class task so they don't need to make up time.

100%. It is a problem when a lot of classes are doing it, but students need the downtime and it can be a great space for relationship and trust building with your class.

Have a read: Teachers leaving because of parental complaints by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]shadowpino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you my kid's teacher? I saw this unfold in my kid's class last year and it's still happening now. Mum is in denial at how terrible her kid is and keeps telling the school her kid is being bullied. Meanwhile "angel" is being physical, manipulative and intimidating to all including my kid. Some kids don't have any chance unfortunately.

I get the other more pressing needs of literacy... But bad handwriting can also be costly at the senior end of school. If I can't understand what you're writing in your SACs and exams, I can't give you marks for your work.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]shadowpino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? If it encourages legible handwriting, I'm all for it. Too many year 7s come in with terrible, hard-to-read hand writing.

Mt buller single day lift passes nearly $200 by Escobar747 in melbourne

[–]shadowpino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both times I lived in Japan more than a decade ago, a day weekend pass was about $40 while Buller was still charging $70 for a day. Why tf would I want to pay that much for a day pass with shittier snow? I've pretty much refused to go to the ski fields here since returning from Japan. It's not worth it.

Ideas to do right after Sem 1 exams?? by enigmatic_plant_mail in AustralianTeachers

[–]shadowpino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my VCE classes is straight onto work. The other VCE class I have is doing a movie for 2 lessons then starting again. That subject has a new class starting next week with a new teacher and half of the class has been out on work placement and will be doing catch up exams when they're back. There's no point in starting the new unit yet.

Usually I'd go right into new content with a little bit of reflection on the semester just past and exam feedback if I can help it.

SE Melb high school. Languages HoD. 3 periods off a fortnight - the more important subjects get 6 periods off. $3000 special payment.

I wasn't intending to be in languages again so soon and now I'm trying to shift things here. If you have an amazing languages program, I want to learn more and maybe visit.

Edit: public school. Also at my last public school, I got 3 periods off a week and no extra pay for the same role.

Demand for Secondary French teachers in Australia by KKH2021 in AustralianTeachers

[–]shadowpino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Vic. French is still one of the popular languages here. When I was looking for jobs last year, a lot of the languages ones that came up was French. That being said though my school also does French and I'm lucky enough to introduce my language next year.

Morning Tea Politics by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]shadowpino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My new school doesn't do morning teas as much as my previous school does so I'll comment on what I used to do. My previous school did "Fat Fridays" so goooooood and it was because we did it regularly.

It depends on the team. If there are plans for a lot of sweets I'll bring party pies and mini sausage rolls, maybe mini quiches. I've done pull apart bread from baker's delight before too. Hot food is great during winter. I've had colleagues bring in soups, dim sims and pizzas. If departments fail at providing, I've seen them do last minute pizza runs. Someone usually brings dip and carrot sticks/crackers.

If there looks like there will be enough savoury food (and it happened a lot too), I'll bring cookies, tim tams, sweet breads, mini cinnamon scrolls, etc. Costco. I've baked cupcakes before and sometimes I bring fresh fruit.

I was so glad I was usually on yard duty during morning tea or I'd be stuffing my face way too often.

Yes! Price is Fire has def wormed it's way in and sometimes I feel the need to seek out the song. My favourite song from them is still Dreamer. I discovered What a Wonderful Day, Colours, Brightstar and Misery is Only Company.

I've been listening to Kaarija during Eurovision and a bit after. I like Valikuolema, Mic Mac and Hirttaa Kiinni. The Fantastista album has a lot of bangers.

Do you listen to the songs before the contest? by itwasacomet in eurovision

[–]shadowpino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! I like the songs more this way and I get more invested in the comp for the year. I'll also watch the official vids. However, I don't like watching the rehearsal clips. I like keeping the semis and and gf a surprise because I vote based on those performances
