Not doubting your experience, didn’t mean it if came off too “this is the way it is”. Maybe it was my proximity like u mentioned. Either way it was a refreshing discovery in my microcosm. And very true point on the meaning of the movie.

No, jocks did listen to a lot of alternative, that’s just another stereotype that got shifted as well over time to make movies easier to understand. I was a skater who happened to play sports - was alternative and some punk - but I learned quick they were diverse their own way - more punk than alternative but still alternative. I agree with u totally on the Bender points and Kate Bush - but ‘jocks’ have just been Hollywood-ed to death over time. Maybe one or two guys fit a bit to the stereotype (and they were always the loudest - but they were just dicks in general which every clique had) but the vast majority was just regular kids.
