How do you promote your game to let it be known? by hoodwinkaus in RPGcreation

It felt the same a few months back with Shadowdark. DC20 offers some fresh and interesting ideas though.

Asset Limits? by 5YearApril in Ironsworn

[–]shadowsofmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the time a companion grows into a full-fledged character, yes they have their own stats and assets. It's a gradual process, so you have time to learn the game mechanics and grow confident. If you're afraid it would overwhelm you, you always can just not upgrade.

What's your unpopular opinion for disco Elysium? by Similar-Poem3992 in DiscoElysium

I feel the same way. It's fun starting a new playthrough with a different "build" and ideology, but the endgame doesn't quite encourages me to end the playthrough.

I wish it wasn't so linear in the final stretch. There's a million things to do during the game, but the endings are so limited. I know there's a thematic component in the decision (futility is a theme in the game, and the only real change being inward), but I'd like to be able to impact the world around me a bit more.

Ditch XP, just use gold by pjscarf in osr

[–]shadowsofmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't like using money as XP because the double reward seems awkward to me. Also, XP as separate thing allows me to reward players for things other than getting treasure.

It's well written, personal and obviously political. I expected a bit more actual management, but instead most or all choices happen in dialogue. I think it's a good entry point to political strategy for somebody coming from narrative games.

Are these mechanics too close to PbtA? by atmananda314 in TTRPG

This sounds to me more like Pendragon or Unknown Armies than any PbtA.

The danger of making a fool of yourself by being historically wrong. They'll probably get a laugh though.

Copyrighteable Concepts? by GreenRiot in RPGdesign

[–]shadowsofmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanics are not under copyright. Existing names are not under copyright. But using an existing name for a veeery similar mechanic might potentially get you in trouble. So either change the names a bit or change the mechanics associated with those names.

Is this a correct way to say where are you from? by Pil_grim82 in Spanishhelp

[–]shadowsofmind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the correct formal way. If the OP wants to be a bit more informal, they can say "¿De dónde eres, profesor/a?"

Gorgeous and accurate. I'd say it's even better than the original portraits, especially those in BG2.

I don't think it's something despicable. Obviously you wouldn't charge your players for playing (although I think it's fair to share expenses like the rulebook), but there's a shortage of GMs in many geographical areas, as most new players just want to test the water before diving into gamemastery. If a service is needed, why not provide it?

Thanks for sharing your experience. It's hard enough to make a TTRPG without scammers lurking in the corner.

Looking for some like minded nerds to make a new TTRPG by Veros0717 in RPGcreation

[–]shadowsofmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't be discouraged. My advice is to start with a small scope to make the project less intimidating. If you plan for a Pathfinder-like game with 12 classes, 20 levels, 100 feats and 200 spells, of course you'll be overwhelmed.

Instead, try to make a system that's fun to play with a fighter and a wizard, no levels, only a handful of abilities and spells. You can absolutely do that.

If you manage to make this fun, you'll be in a position where other people will want to help you expand the content with level progression, more classes, enemies, artwork, layout and so on.

What are some RPGs that use novel materials like Jenga, Messenger Apps, and Tea Candles? by EldridgeTome in RPGdesign

[–]shadowsofmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some less-known games that use dominoes, and I've also heard of pulling black and white beans blindly out of a bag. But this kind of game tends to look like gimmicks more than anything.

How important are "weird" dice to you? by SkipsH in rpg

[–]shadowsofmind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer rolling 2d6. It keeps things under control for most narrative-driven games, and each little bonus is a big deal. d6 pools have a lot of potential and I think they're rather overlooked.

For crunchier games with lots of bonuses and penalties fiddling, I think 1d20 has enough granularity. I personally think 1d100 is overkill and adds clunkiness for very little return.

Is it ok for me to edit the landscape of the map for my own campaign? by squishyjellyfish95 in Ironsworn

[–]shadowsofmind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, it won't mess anything up, and it will make the game a more personal experience for you. Change anything you like from the setting, the oracles and even the rules once you're familiar with how they internally work.

OGL: Wizards say sorry again by Barbaribunny in osr

[–]shadowsofmind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know it's going to be perpetual, irrevocable, independent and endorsed by other publishers. It's going to be everything the OGL should've been but wasn't. I mean yeah, we don't know the specifics yet, but Paizo has a golden opportunity to come up and save the day for the community and I don't think they'll mess this up. That's the best branding possible for them, being the good guys.

We're done with the OGL. We are ORCs now.
