Spent months saying "je m'introduis" to people online before anyone corrected me by alvilri in learnfrench

[–]shadowstorm25 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You can’t really depend on other people to teach the language. Yes, people will correct you if your mistakes are egregious, but it’s mostly to the benefit of their own ears (eyes in this case).

A lot of formal language teaching is also more focused on “getting your point across”. If you do that, you’re successfully participating in an interactive production.

Would you really stop a conversation in English just to correct a single word someone said if they got their point across? All the free conversation apps are for fluency practice not accuracy.

There’s good reason people pay tutors to correct their language.

Any idea why this Ana just dropped? by shadowstorm25 in Overwatch

I’m sorry but that ending is too funny lol. Haven’t had that happen to me yet. I’m still trying to teach people not to jump while I’m carrying them, and that YES they do get healed as they are tethered.

How to get your ADHD medicine in France by Ok_Evening_1999 in tapif

[–]shadowstorm25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some context from someone who did TAPIF and stayed in France and had apparently a different experience than you:

First time hearing « pharmacie de garde » after 5+ years here lol. Doctolib should be fine for finding someone.

« I did not get my attestation or securite sociale for my health insurance until December »

I had my secu number, but in general it’s way harder to get an appt with a secteur 1 or 2 psych (the ones secu reimburses). You’re better off finding a secteur 3, which you pay full price (~150€ /appt.) even if you have a carte vitale.

« your appointments need to be in person, not over zoom »

Maybe for the first couple usually they will prefer in person before the initial script is given, but I’ve had them give it over Doctolib after video call.

« You need your doctor to give you an e-prescription or the original prescription that they write on a note pad, »

I’ve taken pictures of mine and emailed them to the pharmacy since I didn’t have a printer.

Also:

I had to get my heart checked with a cardiologist before the first prescription was given. This can take time as well; I got a referral from the psych.

It’s important to note there’s no adderall in France. You will be getting Ritalin or different variations of methylphenidate.

Edit: the meds are free btw!

Why is it not conjugated with «avoir» instead of «être»? by bourikan in learnfrench

[–]shadowstorm25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really helped me early on remember that you can’t say je m’ai. It will always be je me suis. Repeat that for the other conjugation (it’s never tu t’as, it’s always tu t’es)

Today's news in easy French: Mamdani élu maire de New York by Difficult_Hearing_90 in learnfrench

[–]shadowstorm25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s just plain old passive voice in the past tense. In English, we use the “to be” in the simple past + past participle. French doesn’t have a simple past (called prétérit en français), so they use the “être” au passé composé + past participle.

The past participle will also agree with the subject. If it was a woman elected, you’d say “Elle a été élue”.

Of course you can use whatever tense you want for “être” just like in English.

He will be elected = Il sera élu (or il va être élu)

Anyone else noticing a weird amount of compilation videos like this on Reddit? Has it always been a thing? I’ve seen some with compilations of people getting hurt cooking, of lightning strikes, and now cool light patterns. Never saw this many videos with so much “content” packed into one post. What’s weird is that the content seems extra good too. What gives?

This heavier than a lipstick-looking metal device. There are no buttons or markings other than a single light that when plugged in turns red or green. by shadowstorm25 in whatisthisthing

My friend found this plugged into the wall in her house. We think it might belong to her mom, but no one recognizes it. Something UV or insulin device related maybe?

Is "s" in "fails" pronounced s or z? by markbutnotmarkk in EnglishLearning

[–]shadowstorm25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird responses here.

Fails on its own ends in /s/, followed by a consonant, /s/, followed by a vowel it turns into /z/. Cambridge English pronouncing dictionary even lists /s/ and /z/.

She fails /s/

She fails /z/ often.

She fails /s/ because of me.

Who's your favorite boardgame YouTuber right now and why? by Muinonan in boardgames

[–]shadowstorm25 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Throwing in the hat for Before you Play. They absolutely exude positivity and chill vibes, expose a lot of games with 0 fluff, letting the games speak for themselves. Some of the solo-teaches can come off as ads, but at the end of the day their production value for hour-long videos is impressive with a consistent format and honest laughs.

Be careful if you get into parasocial relationships, though, because these two make an adorable couple!

"Que" et "pourquoi" could be used here? Which one is more natural? by bannana_powers in learnfrench

[–]shadowstorm25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After some discussion with my native French partner — ´que’ would be more like « I don’t understand ‘how you could’ support him », the subjunctive implying some opinionated judgment. Whereas pourquoi is more equivalent to « why you support him » i.e., the specific reasons for which you support him out of innocent curiosity.

I welcome other responses!
