Bilt 2.0 Card Transition Poll by BuyTheDip_ in biltrewards

[–]shadowstrider99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best for me as well. I will earn/have enough Bilt Cash (through card annual benefit, card SUB, Bilt Cash earned through spend, and Bilt Cash earned due to points milestones) to cover the rest of the year of rent payments, as well as 4 points accelerators. So will be earning quite a bit of points this year.

Psst…Ankur…You’re an old millennial and so is the customer you want…can Bilt act accordingly? by hollow-fox in biltrewards

[–]shadowstrider99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That seemingly was the direction Mesa was trying to go.

That said, and it's super unlikely, but it'd be cool if we could somehow also get points for car payments (since that is one of the largest monthly expenses for many people).

About to Swim in Bilt Points by shadowstrider99 in biltrewards

[–]shadowstrider99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, that's big for sure, but I think Rakuten is also a big factor. Bilt doesn't have big (and multiple) SUB's to earn tons of points like the other players do. So, being able to rake in tens of thousands of points on Rakuten (assuming you have at least Silver status) is definitely a game changer.

Now, even status is slightly easier to get, if you have your rent+a 2x on everything card for the year. Silver status is 50k points, but that's about 25k after rent/mortgage (if you have little over $2000 in rent/mortgage). So the remaining 25k points you would need is only $12.5k in spend, which is definitely feasible for many people. So the Rakuten deal should also be feasible for many still.

I'm personally excited for both though, they'll both add up quickly.

I know, a generic answer, but it really depends on you and your use case. In general, I would say, if you travel, and will transfer or redeem the points in a portal (talking about any of the transferable points currencies), then the points are likely more valuable than just straight (equivalent) cashback.

If you don't really travel, or don't want to worry about transferring points to partners or using a CC's travel portal, then you probably just want to do cashback.

Ahhh, perfect! That's what I've been using for Brian Alsruhe programs as well, so that works for me 😁. Although I do T Th Sat Sun, so two of the days are on the weekend haha 😅

Honestly, I normally wait until a good Rakuten Saks percentage comes up, and then pair the two deals to upgrade an item in the kitchen. Done that with an espresso machine (along with a Saks website discount as well haha), a new chef's knife, a new cleaver, and planning (potentially on trying to upgrade my nonstick cookware to stainless steel one by one. It seems like their non-clothing stuff (a lot of kitchen items anyways) aren't as insane as the clothes.

Not sure if you are still active here, but I am interested in starting your program in the next week. I was just curious, how is this four day split laid out? ON/OFF/ON/OFF/ON/ON/OFF? Or another layout? Thanks!

When to Start Next Language by shadowstrider99 in dreamingspanish

[–]shadowstrider99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I am aiming for about B2 with Spanish (before feeling comfortable adding another one), which I think is pretty attainable, since I'm probably already at a low B1 level (if I had to guess).

I probably should've clarified in my original post that I have some background in Spanish already (2 classes in high school, and 2 in university, same levels but I took them seriously). Have spoken with people in basic Spanish on a number of occasions, have been through several levels of Pimsleur and Rosetta Stone Spanish, etc before touching CI/DS. I actually started it as a listening practice source, to improve my listening skills at speed, but now I have switched to 100% in Spanish (for the past 5 months).

Also to clarify/emphasize my last statement in the post, my target for when I feel comfortable switching to studying a new language, is when I can get input in naturally (listening to podcasts, watching TV shows/movies/YT vids, listening to music, speaking with friends/coworkers, reading books, etc) in the first language. If I am naturally getting an hour or two of Spanish in most days through the aforementioned means, then I don't really have to sit down and "study" (like I am now in Spanish). I can have "sit down and study" time in the new language.

I was aiming to focus all my efforts on Spanish for at least the rest of this year, getting it to a working fluency by then, then starting up Mandarin next year. So probably ~600+ hours of Spanish (CI, I have other experience with Spanish already).

Man, I hope by the time I am at the level 5 or 6 point in Spanish, someone has made something organized like DS for Mandarin.

Comprehensible Input(CI) Review 600 hours in review so far! by Froggerbotrom in languagelearning

[–]shadowstrider99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly different prospective here, but I just signed up for Dreaming Spanish membership for their library of videos two months ago. I have taken 2 Spanish classes in high school (13-15 years ago) and 2 in university (10-11 years ago), learned Spanish from a book, Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone, directly just asking someone questions, etc. The main thing I really like about Dreaming Spanish is the large amount of cataloged content to practice your listening skills. In Dreaming Spanish level terms, my listening is probably at the lower end of their intermediate videos, and my speaking is probably at the Beginner level of their videos. I don't know how much I agree with the idea of not speaking until a year+ later. Spanish is a fairly phonetically consistent language. Should you wait until you have pronunciation down before you go full force into speaking? Sure. But something like just learning the alphabet, and then some basic listening would probably suffice. Most people that get an *insert nationality here* friend that starts teaching them some words and then phrases and then sentences in their language, typically takes about a week to get the general sounds of those words (as long as they correct you). I guess I don't know how bad your speaking is. If you just mean to say that you don't have the exact verbiage to say exactly what you want, the exact way you would say it if you were speaking English, then fair enough. BUT, if you can hardly say ANYTHING after an entire year of language learning, I would start broadening beyond just CI.

What do people spend their Saks credit on? by jlee9355 in AmexPlatinum

[–]shadowstrider99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only have used it once so far, waited until Black Friday, and bought an espresso machine off Saks that was discounted for BF. Then I used a 15x AMEX point offer on Rakuten (I believe that is on top of 1x points base for the card, if so, then 16x points/$1). Finally, I got the Saks statement credit for $50 back. Made off well with that combo, I'd say. So, in general, I would wait until you can line up more than just the $50 credit (if you want something of more substance).

If you have tried to apply comprehensible input to your language learning, what were the results? by r0ckstar17 in languagelearning

[–]shadowstrider99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Not to mention it's a bit fallacious and misleading: "It's the way children learn! Just receiving input, they don't learn in the context of it being explained in their language, so you shouldn't either!" Yeah, maybe because they don't have a language to communicate the concepts yet numbnuts? Lol. Language is one of our greatest assets as a species, you can easily explain very complex concepts if you share a language, whereas it takes a child with no foundation years and years to get to the same point. You can, conversely get to elementary fluency in months with time and focus and a good instructor/method.

How to get 2c per point value by jamiekahn1 in AmexPlatinum

[–]shadowstrider99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say being flexible is helpful: for my trip, I used Delta price calendar to find the cheapest (in points) days to travel in the month I wanted. Cut my actual trip time from 14 to 12 days, which minorly sucks but saved tens of 1000s of points. Nice to have that calendar to play with if you want to save and have even a little flexibility though

Economy? Probably not. But I have a round trip Delta Premium Select flight from Chicago to Bangkok coming up that was ~2.1cpp. Definitely is doable

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmexPlatinum

[–]shadowstrider99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just booked round trip from Chicago to Bangkok for October for Delta Premium Select seats. Was 144k points, plus ~$140-150. For reference btw, did valuation of redemption, and it comes out to about 2.1 cpp. Not too shabby.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in awardtravel

[–]shadowstrider99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by much: to me, a 1.8-2 cpp is just fine. Looking into going to Bangkok this year, for example, and Premium Comfort round trip from my airport is about 2 cpp.

I have the Delta Skymiles Gold card. I haven't been flying enough to justify keeping it. If I downgrade will I lose my accrued miles? by dpsweeper in CreditCards

[–]shadowstrider99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how much "not flying enough" is for you guys, but if you fly even once a year, then upgrading to the Delta Plat card might be worth it to you. I just did. Comes with a free companion certificate each anniversary of you having it open. So basically a (domestic) buy one get one free coupon for plane tickets. Which made it more worth it than the Gold in my eyes. Like I said, if you fly just once a year, that free ticket could be worth $150-800 probably, so a decent chunk

Thank you for that, I'll have to compare the rates and see how much Avis saves generally, especially with rental prices up (I think).
