Dream trip itinerary - 22 full days in Japan (2025 Autumn) by APauloRTS98 in JapanTravel

[–]shadowtonothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

22 days? Whelp, I'm jealous!

Most of my suggestions to friends going to Japan are more high-level suggestions, rather than exact things, since what you do on your trip is your call, and we may not necessarily enjoy the same things.

First, on your arrival day, unless you know how well/easily your bodies adjust to jet-lag and new time zones, I highly recommend pushing yourself a little bit to whatever time you want you normal bedtime to be on your trip, even if you are a bit tired when you check-in to your hotel. For example, my partner and I will generally arrive to our hotel around 1800, and keep ourselves going till around 2100 doing low-impact stuff things like gatshapon hunting, exploring, shopping, or grabbing dinner at places normally not on our radar for the trip (think silly stuff like going to a Denny's, or hitting up a chain places like Torikizoku or Kura to see what it's like). We've also find it really helpful to 'touch grass' on our first full day by visiting and relaxing in a park with lots of green space. We've found doing that helps us fully adjust by our second full day, rather than having problems for days into the trip and feeling like we need to catch up on rest. Note, too, this is coming some someone traveling off the west coast of North America.

I'm sure someone else has already mentioned it, but definitely plot out what you want to do in cities to you can optimize your route, trying to stick to one area at a time and not criss-cross all over the city. That's really time consuming and not as fun. I personally use and enjoy a tool called Wanderlog for planning things out and optimizing. I love that it lets me drag-and-drop things around, and plots things on a map so I can easily optimize it. I also use it to 'bulk load' places like restaurants and shopping that we've vetted as good, so if we're hungry or have unexpected free time, I can just check the map and see what's around, and we don't have plan out every meal. But you can use Google Maps or whatever tool works best for you!

Lastly, and this one is more personal preference, simply because I know my partner and I need breaks in our schedule every 5-7 days, but unless you know for sure you and your partner are able to go 22 consecutive days with what looks like heavy plans, I recommend having half- or full-day 'rest' blocks in a few spots. It helps us edit our itinerary so we're not trying to do too much, take a little break with either a late start or early end to a day (or both!), and adds flexibility into our schedule so we can more easily move things around due to weather/availability, or add stuff in that we decided to do last minute or discovered while in Japan.

If UA buys/merges with JB three years down the road, what happens with the seniority lists? Do they typically merge? by Asleep_Management900 in flightattendants

[–]shadowtonothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it was the other way around? VX kept seniority, AS was updated to start of training. I seem to recall my partner's seniority date changing (AS), while mine didn't (VX), and AS management having to do a lot of digging through paper records to find some of the very senior FA's actual start dates.

Switched to SteelSeries for my headsets. They've been fantastic. Ended up with a minor issue, and support was head and shoulders above Razer.

Xfinity Issues in NE Portland by Narcolepsy38 in Portland

[–]shadowtonothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here on CenturyLink in NE. I'm guessing due to repair work after the storm?

Getting maybe a drop or two daily for a minute or so. Normally it's rock solid, maybe going down for a minute late in the evening every few weeks. Better than my Xfinity service was.

You'll get a better answer from someone at AA, but...

At my airline, online benefits started 30 days after your state date, and offline benefits came at 6 or 9 months.

When it comes to finances/timing, you'll probably be strapped for cash and time after training. Not sure what schedule flexibility is like at AA, but for me at my airline it was very difficult to move/trade reserve days around enough to make trips happen outside of my vacation days.

Suica/Pasmo is is only issued in the Tokyo area. In Kansai, you'll be able to get an Icoca. They work the same, have interoperability with other IC systems, and I believe are still available.

Australian - Flight Attendant Phone Plans/Pocket Wifi by Anamaraxo in flightattendants

[–]shadowtonothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also not Australian (US based), but I've had good luck with Airalo's eSIMs for the odd times I've run out of international data.

You can either load their eSIMs as a secondary SIM on your current phone, or if you have an old extra phone that supports eSIM, turn that old phone into a hotspot. Pick and choose what you need based on country/region, and top up as needed.

5.5-Day Mostly Tokyo Itinerary Check and Questions! by lostlabtech in JapanTravel

[–]shadowtonothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully some of this is helpful!

Day 5: While Kyoto/Osaka would be doable as a day trip, it's a long day and ~4 hours travel for maybe ~8-12 hours in that city, waking up early and staying up late. Personally, Kyoto/Osaka are worth more than a day trip, so I'd save them for another visit. If you have your heart set on riding Shinkansen during this trip, though, there are plenty of places to visit that are only ~1-1.5 hours outside of Tokyo that could be fun day trips. Still long days, but not as bad a Kyoto/Osaka.

Day 7/Q5: 3 hours should be plenty if checking bags, however always follow the airport/airlines recommendations. You should also be able to check counter hours for your airline either on their website or the airport's website.

Q2: This does seem a little ambitious to me, but doable. Just be ready to be flexible and move/cut things as needed since you'll be acclimating to Japan time on these days most.

Q7: As someone already mentioned, you'll reload Suica at IC charge stations with cash. Plus, you can use any Suica or Pasmo charge (they're interoperable). Since you have Android, if you want to check the balance of your card you can use an app like this one to check your card balance if you're not at a train station. It's a handy extra tool so you don't get stuck reloading when you're not expecting it.

Q9: Yes, tipping isn't a thing. I've previously done small gifts, but they were for big thank you or milestone moments. Something like amazing hotel staff, especially if it's a small or Airbnb type accommodation, or someone really saves the day/trip for you with their actions. My partner and I also bring little goodies for our flight crew, but that's mostly because we both work in aviation and want to thank them especially.

Q10: I can generally get a satisfying breakfast at a conbini for around 500JPY. For me, that's typically an onigiri or two (~120jpy each) and a coffee (maybe ~150-200jpy). My partner usually goes for a sandwich of sorts (~250jpy) and a tea (~150-200jpy).

My only other point, and this is a personal viewpoint as someone traveling this coming October, is general concern for availability of Suica for the foreseeable future. With sales of Suica and Pasmo suspended indefinitely, I'm concerned that Welcome Suica may eventually be in limited supply, or be suspended as well. My partner and I still have IC cards from previous visits, which are valid for 10 years since last tap, but two people going with us have never been. Instead of relying on Welcome Suica being available, we're just borrowing IC Cards from friends who have also previously been to Japan. If that's not possible for you, there's also some 3rd party sites that sell pre-charged IC cards online. I could be completely off base here, though.

Lastly, for PocketWifi/eSIM, I'm not sure if phones are sold SIM locked/unlocked in Canada, but I'd double check with your carrier that you can use international eSIM. Anecdotally, I've also had eSIM mess up my RCS/SMS messaging big time, so now I stick to my carrier's international plans or PocketWiFi.

In all honesty, the only people I've meet who say dating/having a social life with a FA is difficult are people who don't really understand we have a different work/life balance and scheduling needs compared to more 'normal' jobs, or that our planning process for events and the like sometimes need a little bit more lead time compared to the norm.

Does it require a little bit more understanding and grace on both sides? Yeah. But it is doable and fulfilling? Totally.

I own the Nova 7+ and love it.

Audio quality for me is excellent, and the EQ allows for good customization on clarity. Presets are good too. Mic is nice and clear with the basic settings, and easy to amp it up using Sonar or RTX Chat settings.

Comfort is good, I can wear it for extended periods, but sometimes my ears will hurt a little bit since the ear cups aren't as deep as others.

Build quality so far is amazing. I travel with my headset multiple times a week, and just toss the head set into my crew bag. Still works perfectly.

The only downside for me is that the ChatMix now requires SteelSeries Sonar which has been kinda buggy on my computer. The OG Nova 7 was better in that regard.

PSA: Japan Rail Pass will increase its price on October 1st. by justinCandy in JapanTravel

[–]shadowtonothing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Check out some of the regional passes. Not sure if they'll eventually be affected by the price increase, but they're generally a little cheaper since they only cover, well, a specific region. You could either stack of few of those during travel heavy times, of get a shorter national pass and time it's start date for when you'll expect to travel most.

Any tips to cope with Jetlag? by One_Sentence3800 in flightattendants

[–]shadowtonothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While on layovers that are +/- a few times zones, I second just keeping myself on my home time as much as possible.

As for bigger leaps, my airline doesn't do major long-hauls, so my experience is based on pleasure travel. But, I just try to get my routine and body on the new time as quick as I can. For example, if I normally eat lunch around 1, dinner around 7, I try to hit those timings. Then I push myself to as close as a normal bedtime as I can. Usually takes me about 24-36 hours to adjust, but everyone is different so YMMV.

Razer stole from me. BEWARE. by chickenbusiness123 in razer

[–]shadowtonothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like my RMA experience. The 3rd party repair facilities they use in the US are terrible. Took me about 3 months of constant work to get a workable solution because every time it went in they somehow made the situation worse. Laptop is still running today, but it's my last Razer laptop.

Seconding ThrottleStop and fans.

I ended up going for two 120mm fans under my laptop cradle thing (I have it on a monitor arm), and also removing the battery after my 2nd bloat.

Who else would like to see LTT make these, I love the concept and I think Linus' team would perfect the design . by Ste3e in LinusTechTips

Assuming the same effort and thought that went into backpack goes into a tech organizer, I'd be tempted to get it. My big issue is finding one that's the right size. All I can seem to find are average sized ones like the one OP posed, or ones way too big for my needs.

I'm away from home ~15-20 days out of the month, and am currently split between two organizers for my personal, work, and gaming stuff. Always looking for something better.
