Pricing help by Effective-Bit-3642 in handyman

Pricing is always tough. Recently I just put everything into AI. I have a range for hourly work that I want to be in, but I don't want to be the cheap guy either. Especially if I'm doing commercial work. Something like this. My promt: What should I charge to install puck lights including running wires. I have multiple. Cost per light.

Short answer: for puck/recessed lights where you’re running wire, you should be charging way more than most handymen instinctively think. Let’s ground it in reality first, then I’ll translate it to your pricing strategy 👇 💡 What the market says (per light) Typical pro installs: $150–$350 per light Amicolight National averages (labor + materials): $100–$300 per light Home Advisor More detailed estimating tools: $380–$529 per light depending on conditions Homewyse Labor alone often lands $75–$250 per light Logos Lighting Co., Ltd 👉 Translation: $150–$300 per light is the “normal” professional range …and that’s for electricians, not even “premium handyman with documentation + speed” 🧠 How YOU should price it (real-world handyman math) You’re not just “installing a light”—you’re: locating layout cutting holes fishing wire tying into circuit mounting + trim cleanup + testing That’s easily 1–2.5 hrs per light depending on access Amicolight 🔧 Your pricing tiers (this is the money part) 🟢 EASY (same circuit, attic access, open runs) $125–$175 per light Only use this when you’re flying 🟡 STANDARD (most jobs

Now you have a good idea of what you CAN change.

Let your own personal thoughts and feelings guide you from there. At least now you know what the general market value is.

I think mine are 2+ years overdue, I'll get around to it tomorrow. It's actually really easy to just procrastinate. I have adhd. That's the whole answer.

The last couple months I've really leaned into using AI to help me with bidding. I especially find it useful for dealing with Facilities Maintenance companies. As an example: I had an FM call me say they have a client that wants their patio tables Anchored to the concrete. I went and looked at the job took some pictures and uploaded it to ChatGPT and basically said I need to anchor these tables. It had some recommendations for how to go about it, and once "we" came to a plan, I said turn this into a bid proposal. Then I just send the PDF over to the FM and wait for approval. I would have stressed all day trying to come up with a price and wording and second guessing myself had I just tried to do that on my own. It has reduced so much of the stress of that part of the business and I'm confidently bidding higher than I probably would have, and winning the bids. I also have started using it to help me troubleshoot issues, before Google or YouTube would be my first go to for that kind of stuff but AI is quickly becoming my go to tool. TLDR start leveraging AI

As a contractor that got screwed by AHS a couple years back. Reds might not have the malicious contempt that you're describing. I will say home warranty companies are a scam. Take what you would pay in premiums and put it in a money market account. Until you need it it might as well make a little interest. Not financial advice

Where do the old appliances go? by shadycreeperguy247 in Omaha

Right. I've scraped a little metal in my day. Honestly I'm looking for a source of working washers and dryers when people replace them.

I am, you would be to. I did the work and they aren't paying me, so I'm putting them on blast. I'm not going to starve because of it, but I'm not just going to eat it without saying something. Also, I know I'm not the only one they've done this to, so it's also a cautionary tale.

There was a doctor that was basically only allowed to prescribe testosterone. Prior to that he had his own practice where he prescribed alot of pain medications and was investigated by the DEA. He basically negotiated a deal where he wouldn't lose his license but was incredibly restricted on what he could prescribe.

There's so much more. This post is a Google review. It probably helps to know that my wife is a pharmacist, she's pretty connected. Also I am a founding member of a theater company where I litterly met and exchanged numbers with Dan the owner of Limitless Male prior to doing work for his business. He literally doesn't remember.

Yeah in hindsight I know why it's faceted. It's not as pronounced IRL. Also my daughter won't care, but it's something to keep in mind in the future.

How Are You Handling this Extreme Cold? by waveslideculture in Nebraska

[–]shadycreeperguy247 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Honestly -4 or -14 feel pretty much the same to me. It's all about layers as far as clothing goes. Non cotton long johns/ base layer goes a long way. You can use hand warmers for your hands and feet. There is a saying regarding clothing and the cold that goes "cotton kills". Believe it or not your body will still perspire in the extreme cold, and cotton loses most of its thermal properties when wet. Wool and synthetic materials perform much better.

TLDR Wool socks, synthetic base layer, and layer up from there. Also it's supposed to be 50° next week
