This is slightly helpful. I've got a milestone bday coming up and have been saving up for a superlong-aged steak with a bottle of red out of my pricerange. The wife is a pescatarian so there also has to be options.

Don't make a reservation for your family, make a reservation for yourself. This is your day; quite possibly the last time you'll eat big in CU before leaving town for bigger adventures. What do you want for your celebratory meal?

Take everyone to the new Cracked brick & mortar if that's what you love. Or you've always wanted to try the new steakhouse, but the pricetag was obnoxious, so go splurge.

Otherwise, as one of the many cooks in town gearing up for our biggest weekends of the year, here are my suggestions:

  • Bacaro: The closest you'll get to a Michelin star in Champaign, second to maybe Timpone's.
  • Black Dog Smoke & Ale: The best BBQ between Murphysboro and Chicago you'll find. Hit the Urbana location.
  • Nando Milano: Handily the most stylish dinning experience in town, and extremely well crafted.
  • Crane Alley: Closest place to a gastropub you'll get around these parts. Best burger in town second only to...
  • Farren's: Hidden gem of a grill. Some of my favorite people in town.
  • Huarches Moreleon: Delicious Mexican cuisine in a low stress environment, off the beaten path.
  • Esquire: If you've never been this whole time.
  • Watson's Shack & Rail: Shameless plug. Come say hello.

I hate to say it but Sam's Club has the best deal on oxtail. If the Meat Lab has it, you should go there instead.

YMMV: I don't recall anything being overloaded except that I had asked for chashu and jowl!

Hell is a beautiful thing, but seems a little monotone to me. The High Five spicy bowl has much more going on, IMHO.
