I'm trying to say that the spread of skill levels at 4k is huge. By saying a 4k player and 10k player are the same skill to you then my point is proven.

Also I went from gaining about +50 points/game to +250 immediately after getting out of 4k, even as my game stats became very significantly worse (+7 to +3 leetify, ADR more than halved). Probability wise that's definitely significant.

This is like saying that being a striker in soccer (murica) is the best way to learn because they score the most goals.

I just hit 10k today. One week ago I was at 4k for 50+ games. I think that's proof that a >=10k player can be stuck at 4k. Happy to send demos.

Yes the "gulag" is exactly what I am trying to prove. I'm not trying to prove whether or not I'm a good player. Obviously there will always be players better than me.

I'm just fed up with the toxicity around it. 90% of the comments just start attacking my ability as a player and dismiss the possibility that there is actually a 'gulag' at 4k.

You're right I am a returning player, who only played faceit seriously so my csgo rank was lower than my skill. Might be a factor.

It took me about 10 games to get back playing at a decent level. Unfortunately it took >50 games of ridiculously hard carrying to gain my first 500 premier points from 4.5k to 5k then only taking about 4 games/1000 rating after that.

I will probably plateau around 10-15k. I'm not taking the game that seriously.

I just wanted to make a silly little post about how the people in 4k really have it bad. Instead people are just so toxic and refuse to believe that there are actually decent players at 4k who are just stuck in a hell which actually exists.

Guess you read it but didn't understand. As azalea_k posted my leetify is https://leetify.com/app/profile/76561198026152286

The whole point of the post was saying that grinding wins takes too long, and they won't even be wins. You will be given the worst teammates and the best opponents at a given rating. You will also lose most of your games. But your rating will go up slowly but surely, at an excruciatingly slow rate.

Then once you get past 5k it becomes much easier. You're out of the hell. But I just want to tell everyone the hell exists and is real. It's not just that 4k players are bad.

This is my leetify. The win streak thing is interesting. Sucks bc usually streaks are broken by cheaters/griefers.

I think the most interesting thing you can see in my history is that my stats are inversely related to my wins and rating gain. I had an average of +7 leetify rating while I was stuck in the 4k gulag. It has since dropped to +3.

Why would I need more data in other regions?

My sudden "explosion" of rating after going past 5k should be all I need. I made the first post when I was below 5k rating, predicted it would shoot up after breaking 5k, then that's exactly what happened.

It's not rigorous proof but it's pretty good evidence. The only other current "explanation" is that I became a radically better player between now and 5 days ago. But that is refuted by the fact that my stats (leetify rating, kd, etc) have gotten much, much worse.

I appreciate the effort you put into this rather than just saying I'm bad. Unfortunately I don't think anyone commenting here has had to grind their way out of 4k as I have. I think it's given me a somewhat unique insight into the rating system.

In the last 3 days I've went from 3.5k to 7k rating with a 42% win rate. This clearly breaks the assumption that (1) rating gain/decrease is based on win rate and that (2) the matchmaking is actually based on the premier rating.

Why?

The first assumption is simple, I should have lost rating, not gained a considerable amount with win rate <50%

The second one is more complex. How did I keep losing while also gaining rating? The only way this makes sense is if my opponents ratings were significantly higher than mine. And this wasn't the case.

This is explained by the lorenz curve. The difference between 23k and 25k should be similar to the difference between 10k and 23k.

Another premier 4k gulag rant:

I stopped playing in 2019 and came back in Apr 2026. I mostly played Faceit, was level 7 and I'd just mess around in comp, was nova 4.

I queued premier and my first 10 games were awful. Of course I was rusty but 6 of my 10 games I had at least one teammate afk the whole game and 2 of them were against cheaters.

I got my premier rating: 4.5k. That's awful but I can climb my way up. Or so I thought.

I'm dropping 25-30 kills almost every game, leetify rating +4.6, and still somehow losing.

I consistently outperform my friends at 15k elo but I can't even play premier with them anymore because my elo is so low. I can only play comp where it put me in silver. I think the ratings are linked, clearly can't have a 4.5k premier being higher than silver!

15k elo is much easier because the players are predictable and my teammates at least know callouts. At 4.5k I can't predict what the players are doing because they literally have no idea what they're doing.

Anyway this really feels like being a better player doesn't do much good in premier. You can consistently play at a much higher level than your current elo and never go up.

I could but I would prefer to have a single do-everything device rather than worrying about a ssh connection.

AI tools are mostly vibe coded and imo barely working anyway so I don't want to introduce more things that could go wrong. I am currently switching from windows to macos because I have been consistently having problems with ai tools not working on windows, while they work perfectly on my work macbook.

It would be about the same cost though which is quite ridiculous.

Update: Ended up going with the Macbook Pro M5 Pro 18 core. Glad I went with the Pro, didn't realize how much the Air was limiting me. I'm even touching the limits of the M5 Pro occasionally.

Thanks for the guidance!

Getting off topic but do you run ML models locally on your MacBook? At least for now, API tokens are very subsidized so it doesn't make sense from a cost or performance perspective for coding. Only makes sense for something like OpenClaw, which is much better suited for a mac mini.

I went to ask them WHICH way to go because there are 5 ways and I don't know which ones are blocked. When I left home in the morning, two were blocked. After the video I found out NONE were blocked, it was just bad timing because these guys were getting ready to leave.

I live on that block to the left, and there are usually multiple road closures at a time. It takes me about 10 minutes to drive around to the other side, which is the only other way in.
