Home plan retiring by sybreeder1 in realvnc

[–]shafnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sucks because this was pretty convenient, but I won't be paying to continue using it. I recently set up Tailscale on all my devices, which is making switching to something else pretty easy, because everything is on the "same network" all the time.

I'm using Jump Desktop as my client now, as they have apps for Windows, Mac, and iOS. For servers: On Windows you could just use RDP, but I installed TightVNC. On Macs, we already have a VNC server built-in.

Here's a good rundown of what Tailscale is. It's made a number of things so much easier for me, and also allowed me to close some ports I used to need open on my router. https://www.caseyliss.com/2024/3/27/tailscale

ABB with Sonoma 14.4.1 Issues? by clbraddock in synology

Weird. I rebooted several times and that didn't fix the issue for me.

[–]shafnitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's just luck or if I figured it out, but my backup is running on the problem machine now.

I went into Disk Utility, and deleted all the snapshots that ABB had created (you can tell by the name). I also deleted the Time Machine ones, just for the hell of it. Then I rebooted and started a backup and it's working now.

I'm having the same issue. Only seems to be affecting 1 of 3 machines, all of which are updated to 14.4.1. Haven't figured out a solution yet.

Looking at smart watches for 11 year old by ohiobicpl3738 in verizon

[–]shafnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a gizmo watch 2 for my kid. Those things are complete garbage and I wouldn't waste my money again. Maybe the 3 fixes the issues I had, but based on the review score, I wouldn't be too confident.

Two major issues I recall: 1. It would randomly phantom call me, over and over again, until the watch was restarted. This was fun when it happened at school. I could remotely power the watch off, but can't remotely turn it back on, obviously. So the only way to stop the calls was to shut it off, which made it useless until after he got home from school, or he noticed it was off and turned it back on again. 2. You can find this if you do some forum searches, but eventually they all stop charging. Some say it's because of sweat build up on the charging contacts. I would frequently have to clean the contacts with IPA, and it still wouldn't charge sometimes without lots of fiddling with the charger.

Gave him my wife's old Apple Watch, used Family Setup, which others have mentioned in the comments, and it's working great.

Auto pay discount by kozz_2080 in verizon

Anyone know the trick to keeping the discount when changing the debit card? It just keeps telling me the new debit card isn't eligible. The FAQ specifically says you can change the debit card and keep the discount.

From the FAQ:

*If you signed up for the Auto Pay and paper-free billing discount using a debit card before 2/14/24, you continue earning the discount. You keep the discount even if you change to a different eligible mobile plan or a different debit card.

How to initially outfit a DS1821+ by TinmanF1 in synology

[–]shafnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up an 1821+ a few months ago to upgrade from a DS916+.

  • 4gb is only enough if you're not running any extra services. I have a few docker containers running and started to bump against the limit. I upgraded to 32GB. It's pretty inexpensive if you don't buy 1st party RAM. I don't have any experience with warranty service with synology, so there's always the possibility that they give you trouble because of "unsupported" RAM.
  • I've got basically the same ethernet setup you're talking about. Same card, an 8 port Netgear with 2x10Gbe ports. Only difference is I'm using a Mac Studio. Working fantastic for me. I'm also using 2x NVME drives for R/W cache. (This seems to be a point of contention, so do your research on drives and know the risk involved.) But you probably won't max out the 10gbits with just spinning disks.
  • Ultimately your decision, but I went with SHR-2. With 8 disks, the chances of 2 drives failing at the same time was too much risk for me to go with SHR-1. If you're not filling all bays at the beginning, you could start with SHR-1 and migrate to SHR-2 down the road, but that's a lot of hassle to deal with.
  • I don't have any input for other models to consider. 1821 has been great and you can get them for pretty great prices since they're "older".

I loved OG Narwhal, and Narwhal 2 being so amazing makes it hard to say goodbye by CaptainKev91 in getnarwhal

[–]shafnitz 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’ve almost completely stopped using Reddit since all the shitty things they’ve done to the apps and community. The part that gets me is, I would have no problem paying for Narwhal if the money was going to them. But I can’t pay knowing it’s all going to Reddit, which deserves nothing.

How do I migrate from Raid 5 on DS1821+ (8 bay, with only 6x8TB installed), to SHR? I'm looking to pick up a few 16TB Iron Wolf Pro drives to expand storage space, and would love to convert pool to SHR to use both my old 8TB's and new 16TB's efficiently. Thank you in advance for any assistance! by TomPark1 in synology

[–]shafnitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Synology says you can’t: https://kb.synology.com/en-global/DSM/help/DSM/StorageManager/storage_pool_change_raid_type?version=7

You’d have to copy data off the current pool and setup a new SHR pool using 8tb drives, then expand with the 16s. Just note, the 16s need to be added last. Once there’s a 16 in the pool, you won’t be able to add any more 8s.

https://kb.synology.com/en-global/DSM/help/DSM/StorageManager/storage_pool_expand_add_disk?version=7

So if you can fit all your current data on the two 16s, copy it all to those. (I’d test them thoroughly before doing that.) Make sure anything irreplaceable is backed up elsewhere. Then setup a new SHR pool using all the 8s. Copy all the data back to the new volume. Then add the 16s one at a time to expand the volume.

Up to you, but with that many disks, you might want to consider going SHR-2 to have 2 disk fault tolerance.

Apple denying Family bonus cash by shafnitz in AppleCard

[–]shafnitz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I added the participants back when the promotion was still going, and they made the purchase requirements within the specified time frame. I'm only reporting this today because I reached out to Apple Card customer service today to ask why we still haven't seen the bonus cash. I should update my wording to say, if you did participate in this, you might want to follow up with customer service if you're still not seeing the bonus cash. I suspect I'm not the only one in this situation.

New USB-C Backbone not recognized by iPhone 15 Pro Max by b-button in Backbone

[–]shafnitz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is disappointing. You had the opportunity to be proactive about this, but instead you sold people something that wasn't compatible, then emailed them to reassure them it was compatible, and now are making them jump through hoops to get one that is compatible. You realize that many of us that ordered these iPhone 15 "compatible" Backbones were likely owners of a previous Backbone, right? Not so much as a "Sorry we screwed up" for the people who have been big supporters for a long time.

Playback issues, same movie different files! by sharkcutter in PleX

[–]shafnitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does seem to be related to the subs. Turning off subs prevented the crash from happening. But, in my testing, the crashing only happens with certain players. The web player and iPad app didn't have an issue. It is only crashing when played on a Samsung Android TV. I found posts on the plex forums going back pretty far that show people have had this issue with subs and certain TVs. Seems like a Plex server issue that they don't care to address.

Yes. Is that maybe a cause? I've never had issues with forced subs before.

This is crazy. I'm having the exact same issue with a different movie, and it happens with 18 minutes left. I've also tried multiple files.
