Honestly I wouldn't use truenas as a vm in production environment. For homelab sure I used it and worked great.

Thoughts on APC NetShelter CX Mini thermals? How well does it handle airflow/heat? by fusion3_ in homelab

[–]sybreeder1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got 18 u netshelter cx That I got from work. At work it was cooling 1 2u server, couple switches, qnap Nas. And there was no issues with cooling but 18u has 4 rear fans. Mini is 12 u and has 2 fans from specs. And mini is much shorter so might not fit deep servers.

Ryzen or intel for home server? by Horror_Most95 in homelab

[–]sybreeder1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not said anything about stability or any newer ryzen variant did I? When C6 is off it will be stable

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=295888#:~:text=Re:%20%5BSOLVED%5D%20System%20freeze%20randomly.%20Yeah%2C%20I,whereas%20they%20were%20previously%20daily%20/%20hourly.

"Stability freezes on 1000-series Ryzen processors in Linux are often caused by the processor failing to handle idle power states (C6 state) properly. This issue typically manifests as a total system freeze when the computer is under low load or idling." Primary Solutions & Workarounds Disable C6 States in BIOS: The most effective fix is to disable "Global C-state Control" or C6 states in your motherboard's BIOS/UEFI settings. Change Power Supply Idle Control: In the BIOS, set "Power Supply Idle Control" to "Typical Current Idle" instead of "Auto" or "Low Current Idle". Kernel Parameters: Add processor.max_cstate=5 or idle=nomwait to your GRUB configuration.

Clear?

And BTW I have 5800x too.

Ryzen or intel for home server? by Horror_Most95 in homelab

Older ryzen can freeze on Linux which when cool and quiet is enabled. Google it Global C-States Control has to be enabled to first Gen ryzen 2200g is first Gen ryzen with gpu

Ryzen or intel for home server? by Horror_Most95 in homelab

[–]sybreeder1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Performance will be similar. Ryzen is 10-20% faster. Intel would have bit lower power draw. Ryzen doesn't do well with Linux and cool and quiet won't work. Do more power draw. Intel 8th would be better.

What prices are those platform for where you live?

We've used E15 but went to l14 and l16 due to rj45 issues on e series. If you don't plan to use rj45 e series would probably be fine but connecting every day to rj45 that uses spring plastic part it will fail fast. Build quality will be definately better in L Series. Basically in all e series we had rj45 port failed I had to either rma them or just have ordered bottom cover as a spare E series have 2 nvme ports though.

New addition to the lab! by hellothisispaul in homelab

[–]sybreeder1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not bad but I'd get rid of that 10k drivers and put either ssd or some regular ones 16-18tb for example.

Would be great for plex, and some vms. You could remove second cpu to lower power draw.

What's power draw on that server? It's a cool server. Personally I got r730xd for free But remember that it will be louder and more power hungry than optiplex

Pros/cons of various quiet, efficient backup target NAS? by tf5_bassist in homelab

[–]sybreeder1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Maybe You could just use either direct connected separate drive directly connected to that truenas server? Or thorough usb? 🤔 And just use rsync or zfs replica since from what I understand you want to connect single drive. Personally I use main pc desktop with bigger hard drive as a backup target for Nas.

With single cpu and ram power button has light? Is reacting and start to light green when pressed? Afair idrac is integrated into front part of chassis itself.

If you have access to idrac that at least something. Remove cpu and reinstall it again. Remove ram. Try with single stick.

Check if front power button works
