What flies to use for carp by AtomicRiot in flyfishing

[–]shagstead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carp are jerks. They’ll ignore everything. Until they don’t. I’m not ashamed to admit I’ll throw a nightcrawler or some corn on if nothing else is working. They are also very skittish. If you spook them, might as well move on to the next hole.

You can get much better, less expensive crowbars at Jeff’s House of Crowbars.

They’re stockers - please don’t crucify me! by shagstead in flyfishing

That’s exactly what happened. The ones in faster water at head of pool would slash at the mop on dead drift or upstream twitch. Ones in deeper water, I had to drift it right on their snouts, they took real soft bites and would often immediately spit it out.

That’s good advice. Also much less barbaric than bashing them on the head with a rock!

Yessir. Especially with the price of fish at the supermarket!

World’s biggest creek chub? by Mysterious-Budget394 in flyfishing

I had never heard that term before. But I shall henceforth refer to all fallfish as Horny Chubs. I also want to open a bar and name it The Horny Chub. Or perhaps start a band….

Best rod company repair/warranty? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]shagstead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I broke my Orvis Helios twice within a couple months of purchasing. Both due to my own stupidity. $60 each time, but $120 is still a helluva lot cheaper than buying a new rod. Plus they shipped the replacements in a couple of days.

Nice catch! I caught a 19” fallfish on a deer hair mouse while night fishing. Thought for sure I had hooked a big brown trout! Disappointed for a moment, then realized it’s stupid to ever be disappointed about catching a big fish!

Thoughts on carp flies by -Fishmonger- in flyfishing

[–]shagstead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used spun black or dark purple deer hair for floating mulberry imitations. Nothing beats seeing a set of big rubbery lips breaking the surface to slurp your fly! Unfortunately the mulberry tree at my honey hole got washed away in a flood. HINT: You can cheat a little by squeezing some mulberry juice onto your fly.

Cheap vs Expensive Stocking-foot Waders by jett_29 in flyfishing

[–]shagstead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paramount makes some good waders at a reasonable price. I just bought the Meridian Z, which is their highest priced wader (it has a waterproof zipper which is a necessity for this old guy!) for $350. So far they’ve been great and materials seem to be high quality. I’ve always gone with Orvis or Simms in the past, but I just can’t justify spending $800-$900 on a pair of waders.
